Actually, the main concern seems to be that the men placed under his command would be in undue danger, not the personal safety of the prince. I can understand that. Seems to me like the solution would to only have volunteers serve under him, the same way volunteers only serve in the special forces and airborne.

I wouldn't be surprised if the possibility for propaganda if he's killed is a serious consideration too. The article hints at that but doesn't say it.

Heaven knows why Prince Harry wants to go to Iraq since as the French found out in WW2, Nazis like to march in the shade.

Yeah, deploying a British royal in Iraq is asking for trouble. It would be painting a giant target on whatever unit he would be in.

Plus, look at it selfishly - can you imagine all the crap we'd have to deal with in the media if he got killed over there? Yeesh.

2006-09-03 07:21:37 PM
And the reason Bush's daughters aren't going to Iraq is the same reason that Bush didn't go to Vietnam. They're just better folks than you and me, get it?

If that dude wanted to cross the street for a pack of smokes, he'd probably be followed by a small batallion of bodyguards and would probably have an entire trauma team on standby just in case. Now imagine the measures the british army would have to take if he were to go to a war zone. And for what? Is he some sort of military genius?

It's interesting that Prince Andrew, who was in a very similar position (brother to the future king) did see action. He was a Navy pilot - a job where his position as royalty made no difference, as the enemy don't know who's flying a helicopter.

Makes you wonder whether Harry really thought it through when he decided which branch of the armed forces to go into.

Elvis went to war, which is why he is the king, and you're just a schmuch.

2006-09-03 07:43:07 PM
If he is willing to put himself in danger, and be treated as any other soldier, then more power to him.

I think churchill2004's idea is the best -- any unit he serves with would have to be all-volunteer.

Alternately, how easy would it be to have him serve under an assumed name? Would secrecy be maintained or is that a pipe dream?

Do you really think insurgents are going to recognize Prince Harry from a few hundred yards away with full combat gear on? I suspect he'd be just about equally difficult to recognize.

He'd be too recognizable to any Briton he came into contact with, it'd be like giving Condi Rice and "assumed identity" and shipping her off to a war zone. It just wouldn't work.

No, but it wouldn't be a secret what unit he's in, and the neither are the operating areas of specific units very secret.

This war has been going on for 5 years now. To me this is the equivalent of the friend (we all have one) that watches you get your ass kicked in a bar fight and starts talking shiat as the other guy is walking away knowing it is over and he is in no danger of getting his ass kicked.

2006-09-03 07:48:52 PM
Trust me, I was deployed there for a year - if he's going with the Brits, it ain't gonna be too dangerous a location.

2006-09-03 07:59:20 PM
How true, baffler, how true. Although, maybe him being in Basra would make some of the insurgents head south, and take pressure Baghdad.

2006-09-03 08:01:22 PM
To me, this sounds like a kids naivety about the realities of war or worse simply flag-waving royal PR ( yep, we're right behind our troops - truly!).

Was it really worth reporting in the first place?

2006-09-03 08:02:34 PM
Groan....

Thankfully they have actual training and some kind of enlistment criteria.

thebaffler: Trust me, I was deployed there for a year - if he's going with the Brits, it ain't gonna be too dangerous a location.

I was there for a year and half and the Brits I was with were EOD in the heart of Baghdad with our team. Quit talking out of your ass.

2006-09-03 08:14:28 PM
bullock.

Elvis, to my knowledge, never served in a war. He was conscripted and spent two years in West Germany like most other American conscripts between Korea and Vietnam. Not that there's any shame in that, but he didn't see combat.

2006-09-03 08:15:57 PM
If the man wants to serve in Iraq then let him serve in Iraq. I understand that there would be a certain element of danger in it, but that's a part of serving in the military. Britain has an all-volunteer military and I'm sure there would be no shortage of men willing to serve under his command.

It would be a huge morale boost to the insurgency if they managed to kill the Prince and it would be a huge boon to the UK anti-war movement, giving them massive political capital, but let the man do what he wants to do. He can make decisions for himself and he is in the British military. There comes a time in every man's life when he has to grow up.

By enlisting in the military, he is making a decision for himself, but that decision is largely a decision to submit to the will of his superiors. You have to understand the duty of his superiors to act strategically, and, strategically speaking, it'd be a big risk to his entire unit to have him out there, and the expected gain from Harry serving on the front line is no greater than the gain from placing someone less risky.

2006-09-03 08:35:34 PM
I enjoyed the headline, but I have a twisted sense of humour.

I say let him go, maybe having him over there and in danger will help motivate the powers that be to end this disaster.

/Just my little opinion
