And people say there's nothing good to watch on cable TV these days.

2006-09-01 10:13:23 AM
So this is a NASCAR station?

2006-09-01 10:13:25 AM
The Saturn Sky is the exact same car as the Solstice.

Teh winnar!

No its not.

Hell yah, SoonerGrad ftw

Beats 99% of everything else on TV

DRTFA. There's nothing sad about this. It is a perfectly practical way for people who actually care about DRIVING the cars they drive to figure out which cars to not get.

It is *exactly the same* as reading a web site of restaurant reviews, so you don't go to the ones that serve food you won't like.

If you are one of the people who feel all cars are about the same, fine. Don't watch this channel. You'll be bored, and even more dangerous behind the wheel than you are now.

I LOL'd

DriverTV shows video clips of different vehicles driving down the same stretch of winding road. Based on the videos, Mr. Adler says he was able to compare the Sky with cars like the Pontiac Solstice. With his research complete, Mr. Adler purchased a Sky without having a test drive or examining the vehicle in person.

Great, since TV replicates bumps, squeaks, rattles, wind and road noise, cowl shake while going over steep driveways, ease of access to interior controls.. Oh wait, it doesn't. Get off your ass and test drive something. Who the hell blows $15k or more on any product based on what the TV shows? On top of that, these are simply ads, sponsored by the car companies themselves.

2006-09-01 11:56:49 AM

The Sky supposedly is more luxe and the Solstice is more of a true roadster.

Sounds like a sensible use of on-demand video, actually. It's pretty much Edmunds.com for people who like pretty moving pictures.

SoonerGrad: So this is a NASCAR station?

I swear I thought of that before entering the thread, but nixed posting it because you can't actually buy NASCAR, uh, cars.

AnthraxRipple: The Saturn Sky is the exact same car as the Solstice.

I was under the impression that it was a different body on the same car. Seems I read that a year or two ago in Car and Driver. May have changed, though.

2006-09-01 12:02:06 PM
Too bad the Sky and Solstice still can't hold a candle to the Miata (yes, I've driven all three). Close, but no cigar. But they should be getting forced induction next year, which could change things a bit. but that's OT...

I'm probably "the market" for a station like this, but I can't imagine buying a car without driving it (several times) first. So apparently this channel ironically appeals to people who just want a driving appliance. Save yourselves the trouble and just buy the damn Camry already.

GoTarHeels: DRTFA. There's nothing sad about this. It is a perfectly practical way for people who actually care about DRIVING the cars they drive to figure out which cars to not get.

Which part of watching TV and purchasing a car based on what the show tells you relates to "care about DRIVING the cars"?

It is *exactly the same* as reading a web site of restaurant reviews, so you don't go to the ones that serve food you won't like.

No it's not. It is *exactly the same* as going to a restaurant you've never heard of before, ordering food based on what the menu says, and taking it home to eat it. Except the restaurant is going to cost you a few bucks and your complaining about bad food should only last until you flush it the next day. Buying a new car you've never driven based on a TV commercial is just stupid.

should be a big hit in the dumbfark south

2006-09-01 12:03:27 PM
dlwhite: the Solstice is more of a true roadster.

If you like your roadsters slow, sluggish, and eclipsed by the 17 year old Mazda Miata, sure.

NikolaiFarkoff: Too bad the Sky and Solstice still can't hold a candle to the Miata (yes, I've driven all three).

Crap, you beat me to it.

I really don't understand why anyone would bother buying the Sky or Solstice, given that they're roundly trashed by the Miata. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Miata lover -- I think it's a big ole POS -- it's just that the Sky/Solstice are even worse.

IMHO, current production roadsters start at the Boxster, progress to the Honda S2000, and finish somewhere around the Lotus Elise.

I hope it's a really biatchin' Camaro.

I see this as the begining of programming for pets.
That station would drive my dog crazy.

/and the neighbors what w the barking.

I love to come on Fark and see what random things get individuals (AHEM, spiffitz) all riled up and roarin to go. Fark is like one big case study. I should submit the website to my psy professor.

Anyhoo, can you select which car/s you want to see or do you have to just sit and wait and hope it comes by after 3, 6, 9... hundred minutes?

2006-09-01 12:17:12 PM
Why the SAD label? Are people forced to watch this channel at gun point? For me it would be just one more cable station I never watch.

2006-09-01 12:19:18 PM
"With his research complete, Mr. Adler purchased a Sky without having a test drive or examining the vehicle in person."

This is sort of like the minimum of three sources quoted in your paper, but more is better, and calling your research "complete" at three for just enough to pass with that C. Stopping and complete are two vastly different concepts, especially on a car. Who buys without examining the vehicle even? And beyond that why would you want to forego a test drive, it is a car, almost no matter what you are spending a few thousand dollars if not many thousand dollars.

Are people really this bad with money?

Had a chance to drive the S2000 and I have to say that I was skeptical at first but pleasently suprised by it's performance.

or i could just hop in my car and drive around myself...

IdBeCrazyIf: Had a chance to drive the S2000 and I have to say that I was skeptical at first but pleasently suprised by it's performance.

They're pretty amazing cars if you're willing to do most of your driving near the redline. I traded mine in for an Evolution MR earlier this year. On the track, the Evo's not that much faster than the S2000 -- but on the street it's no contest.

I just came in to see how long it took before someone made that reference - you're pretty quick on the keys, buddy...

Cars farking suck. I'm going to blast giant holes in the street that goes by my house so you farkers quit driving down it.
Car 'journalists' are completely useless sub-humans.
Don't get me wrong, I love to go fast. But I'd rather build my own rocket car than buy some overpriced piece of mass produced shiat.

It's unfortunate that license revocation is as far as most penalties for street racing asshats go. I'd really like to see far more violent interventions implemented.

At the risk of overkill of the same joke...

We already have that station. It's called the Speed Channel.

Haven't had a chance to drive the Evo yet... liking yours?

I WOULD be a fan of this channel maintaining an EXCEL spreadsheet comparing vehicles in a standard effing format. Motorcycles too. Horsepower, MPG, 0-060, turning radius, gearing, stuff like that. Just put all the numbers where I can sort them out instead of picking and choosing formats from half a dozen sites.

hmmm. Wonder if there's any money in it.

2006-09-01 01:19:01 PM

You'll be biatchin when you see the price...OMFG

I guess GM wants back into the market but they don't seem to be serious about selling any of these things. GREED KILLS.

despite the fact that i like the mazda better and own a mazda 3gt and what car and driver etc say, the solstice etc is every bit as competitive as the mx5.

/autocrosser
//MR2 Sypder owner
///Mazda owner
////still would rather have an mx5, but think the gm looks better
