atomsmoosher: Yes, you can buy a pound of cheese for about as much as a pound of apples and get X many more calories for your money. However, you don't need that many calories to get by. Hence, obesity. We're talking portion size as well here. Large portions are a better value, but unncessary. We're talking about food here, not bags of mulch.

I totally hear what you are saying, and agree to an extent. I just take issue with the notion that healthy diets aren't more expensive, when it's essentially proven to be untrue. Part of the problem also is that you're comparing apples to oranges (or rather, apples to cheese). Looking at foods individually brings even more insight to this phoenomenon: Which is more expensive: a pound of bonless, skinless chicken breast, or a pound of chicken thighs? 90% lean Ground Beef or 97% lean Ground Beef? whole wheat pasta grain products or regular processed grain products? Etc...

The obesity epidemic facing this country and especially the poor is a very complicated subject. I concede that it can not be boiled down to one factor (i.e. healthy foods are more expensive), but will not concede that it's just because "poor people are lazy". It's a combination of alot of htings, both of those included.

I think education could play a huge role in helping this out. These healthy, yet not as costly alternatives seem obvious to you and I, but we also (Im assuming) come from middle class backgrounds where we were benefitted by better education including health education, and acess to a wealth of information from sources such as the internet.

I also can't negate the effect that culture plays in everything. There's no denying that a large percentage of poor people live in the South, and possibly an even larger percentage of the poor obese are from the south. I can't help but think that being raised in a culture where almost every food option is battered, fried, and covered in some sort of sauce or gravy doesn't impact this population. :P

Not that that food isn't wonderful (it is), just that it cointributes to an overall unhealthy lifestyle.

For the record, Fat kid growing up. By the time I got to college I weighed about 350lbs at 6'2", by the time I graduated I weighed about 180lbs. Ran a lot, ate less. Too skinny, actually, although going by charts I was normal.

I'm at 210 now, but I look healthier.

Doesn't that woman have a doctor?
When diet and exercise were no longer maintaining my weight (in fact I started gaining weight) I got my carcass to a doctor. Now with medication, I still have the same habits and I'm actually loosing weight.
Some people need diet and exercise and medication.
That woman obviously needs a team of doctors. One for the psycological aspects and at least one for the physical.

Does anyone else think this sounds a bit too much like a redneck version of the movie "Tommy Boy"...

To The Homer Tax... the problem with what you are saying is that you're ignoring the fact that when we say "eating healthy is not more expensive than eating unhealthy" that these people have a spending point set that allows them to balloon up to 500 pounds! I'm sorry, you could eat nothing but pure shortening all day, and still have to spend a decent chunk of change to get that many calories in a day. A person such as this DOES need to drastically reduce her caloric intake!

Whether you eat 5,000 kCal/day worth of $1 double cheeseburgers at McDonalds, or 5,000 kCal/day of grilled lean meats, fish lightly sauteed in olive oil, brown rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, and anything else healthy you could think of... you are still eating way too many calories.

Dear Uneducated, Lazy, Morbidly Obese, Disgusting, Hideous, Ass Ugly, farking Swine.

If you were so abusive to your body your whole life, shovelling down bearclaws three at a time and sucking the cream filling out of all the ho-ho's and ding-dongs 'cause "Dat's da good part, hur hur", maybe you wouldn't be in this shiat-sorry perdicament. How terrible is it that people have to spend their lives CLEANING and BATHING you, things that even a 4 year old can do, for the rest of your worthless life. Take into considerationg how these people feel. He's literally breaking his back to wipe your horrible orifices and bath your stinking folds of skin, and you expect him to be faithful? Are you completely batshiat crazy? You're lucky he stuck with you this long. You're a disgusting, hideous, vomit-inducing, shiat-stained excuse for human life, please don't even exit that house through you're new garage opening and subject other human beings to how disgusting and hopeless you are. You make me sick. I didn't do this to you. You're the one that couldn't put down the farking fork. I hope your skeletal structure gives way one day while you're chowing down on a triple stack of Pepperoni, Extra Cheese, Bologna, Ice Cream, and Gummi Bear pizza, and you expire in a quick and quiet way so that none of us will have to put up with the sight of your pathetic ass again. Thank you. DIAF.

/has no pity (obviously) for people that swell up on their own volition and think they deserve to be washed every day by people like a farking beached whale...

javansdaddy: I like the downloaded version because I don't have to get online to log the calories/exercise. I also like the fact that I can do recipes - I type in the ingredients & serving size and FitDay calculates the calories per serving for me. That in itself is worth the money...

Oooh... the recipies thing does sound nice. Inputting recipies with alot of ingredients gets annoying pretty darn fast, esp. recipies that you use often.

If you want a great spinach and feta stuffed chicken reipice that's low in cals and high on taste - lemme know :) (Although it's not that complicated, smash a chicken breast flat and put spinach and feta in it is pretty much the long and the short of it :P).
2006-08-30 12:27:35 PM
javansdaddy, lookin' good, as is your woman (with all due, wholesome respect). Sorry to have not delivered my due props previously.

Anyhoo, since I boobooed on the slashie in my previous post by including a "less than" symbol, my goal is 170lbs, under 10% bodyfat. I can reach it, IF I am responsible with my diet, and continue to lift weights, do martial arts, and jog.

I stand by my statement that healthy food is too expensive. A sticky wicket in the discussion is that unprocessed foods must often be prepared, which, if you're feeling like talking economic philosophy, has a cost attached to the time it takes to prepare.

/If I ever get defined abs, I will strip for charity, so help me FSM.

I really like the feel-good stories of the posters here that have been motivated enough to loose some weight and all, but the humor kind of died. I miss the fattie jokes.

This is just....I don't even know.....argh, nasty. Ewwww.

I work for a shrink. We do psych evaluations for people who are pursuing the gastric bypass surgery/lap banding procedure. Obviously, I see a LOT of people who weigh in the 300+ range.

Javansdaddy, I'd love to get you into one of the support groups my boss holds. While the surgery is indeed only a TOOL, there is a whole mindset that has to be in place before the tool will be valuable. Congratulations to you, sir, for seeing that and just doing what needed to be done.

We had one guy who went through the GBP surgery. On his way home FROM THE HOSPITAL post-surgery he had his taxi stop at a 7-11 so he could get a 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew. (Soft drinks are a massive no no post surgery.)

We currently have three people who are pursuing the surgery FOR THE SECOND OR THIRD TIME. What gets me about these people is that their insurance company is footing the bill for this surgery ($30K) and these fatties don't even make the effort to utilize the tool! They think they can just keep on eating the Ho Hos and pizza and the weight will just melt off, like the Wicked Witch of the West.

I dunno, I just don't get it.

/Friday is my last day with the doctor
//I won't miss the fat people who accept no responsibility for their predicament
///I will miss the seriously mentally ill who just can't help it--they break my heart but I love 'em

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get away from the fattie.

point of information: Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were never married, though he did co-adopt some of her children. Soon-Yi was not one of those children so he could marry her. The judge who spoke on the ruling called him disgusting but not criminal and told him he would never let him near any of his kids.

I'm 5'9, 152lbs, waist size is 29 inches. God knows, how fatty our food is here in Quebec, the thing is that you need to have the disciple to say enough. Don't get me wrong, food is delicious but now you just need to stop eating or else, the pounds will come in.

Ask your self, have you people ever seen a 500 pound woman in a us jail!? no, because there the food amount is regulated, therefore inmates do no over eat!!!!

People are big because the consume big and it will always be as simple as that.

My big ass is as big as rocky top,
My flab's floppin' down those tennessee hills.

Tasted like beer but smelt like shiat.

Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Once my daughter farked her step-daddy on rocky top,
After sippin' from a moonshine still.
Strangers thing have happened up on rocky top,
Hope she remembered to take her pill.

Corn wont pass my colon on rocky top,
My bum's too impacked by far.
Thats why the door of my doublewide
is always set at ajar.

Rocky top, youll always be
too small a doublewide to me.
Good ole rocky top,
Rocky top tennessee, rocky top tennessee.

Now Ive had years of cramped up trailer life,
Trapped like Ms. Craig - you know...Jenny Jenn.
Alls I know is if get skinny.
Life'll be simple again.

Something I am working on @ Toastmasters, a series of speeches on how I accomplished what I have. The last one I did (on commitment) went over like gangbusters. I really like talking about my journey with other people, that's why I think I might be a good motivational speaker...

/commitment, portion control, exercise, accountability - winning combination.
//need commitment for the other keys to work and keep on working...

The Homer Tax: Which is more expensive: a pound of bonless, skinless chicken breast, or a pound of chicken thighs? 90% lean Ground Beef or 97% lean Ground Beef?

True. But with the thighs you are paying for pounds of bone and cartilage that you can't eat and the more fatty ground beef just ends of draining off. So the skinless breast and leaner beef may end up being a better deal.

I can only hope to have someone to take care of me (fetch beer, doritos, cakes, etc) when/if I reach 500lbs. Otherwise,I might starve to death :~( Maybe I could get one of those helper monkeys.
2006-08-30 01:03:21 PM
Lost 40 lbs here. Was at 270, and now i'm in the 225 - 230 range. I don't like to weigh myself, but the mirror and my pants are ultimately my judge. I'm at size 36 right now (formerly 40), and my goal is to get to 32s. Great work too all of you. Here's a progress page (pops) I made a couple of years ago when I'd lost 30lbs.

Yes, I'm sure I can...

They just put wheels and a 454 on the couch so she could move around.

2006-08-30 01:08:09 PM definitely have the right mindset and that is what is going to get you to your goal weight! Congrats to you again...I do think you should do some motivational speaking about your success. You didn't take the easy way and actually did the work. Way to be.

netsloth...congrats to you, too. (Didn't read all the posts before I posted...didn't mean to deny you your props!!) Like javansdaddy, I think it's awesome that you are just doing it on your own. While I do think SOME people need the surgery, I firmly believe that 60% of the surgery-seekers are just lazy and want to take the easy way out.

Good job to you both and keep up the excellent work!

MarkMartinFan: Can I ask how you put a larger door in a trailer?

Remove the bathroom? She obviously isnt using it. I'm assuming they just hose her down once a day.. probably put a drain under the couch.

Tell me THIS. How the hell does a 500lb woman stay in a trailer? Those things arent meant to hold that much weight.

I dont know really. I was 6' and 235. People said I'd look good at 180. I got there, eating spagetti and walking to and from work.

I got to 180 and the change was amazing. Everybody freaked, and said I was to thin. I'd gotten to the weight everyone said I'd look good at. I found out it didnt farking matter what weight I was, and learned not to give a damn what everyone else thought.

/240 Now, and warm!
//180 I was cold all the time.

I got up to around 220 once. That sucked. Girlfriend said I was getting fat.

Now, I'm at 190.. and 6'2".. would still like to get to around 180 and hold that. But .. .the beer... and pizza WONT LET THAT HAPPEN!

Daysteppr - I've been in the same place, though I do well at 190. I quit smoking 8 months ago and just now I'm getting back on track with eating better and going to the gym. I gained 45lbs!

People can certainly figure out what's bad for them and avoid those foods. For me it's rice - it just fattens me right up and since I gave up rice and went to other carbs, I am slowly losing weight.

I know you meant it as a joke, but losing a significant amount of weight will actually make you look, um... bigger. No flab hiding the base (and potentially the first couple inches) of the goods so to say.
