Well obviously it's not at all a hostile environment otherwise they wouldn't exist in it. Or maybe there really is something about our present day environment (oxygen rich, lots of water, mild temps...) that is especially condusive to life, and other environments are naturally more hostile even to different forms of life (like if life began from a different beginning, without dna rna or cell membranes or whatever characterizes life on earth). A book I'm reading right now called "What Evolution Is" seems to say that life began very simply in a c02 rich environment, oxygenated the planet, and then more complex life began evolving. Apparantly (well obviosly, what else could do it?) life began due to the vastness of the suitable environment(s) and through random chemical reactions forming objects that could grow and eventually replicate.

Why the hell not? I'm drunk and bored. I'm sorta split on an issue solely of my own creation - whether evolution works unguided or if there is a 'force', benevolent or not, that nudges it along its way. Articles that point out bizarre creatures are obviously helpful for the nudging argument, but on the other hand. . . they're not bizarre enough, you know? If there was a creature that resembled a chimpanzee, ant-eater, and wasp all rolled into one. . . well, then I think we could put this whole debate on the existence of God to bed, don't you?

I don't think the "bizarre" level of a new creature necessarily push the argument in one direction or the other. You'd just have a modification of some aspect of evolutionary taxonomy. It would take something pretty fundamental to absolutely refute evolutionary theory. That being said, evolutionary theory is kind of a peripheral view of what's actually going on. I like to think that there's some force involved in our existence, and probably best understood through the scientific route. Evolution doesn't oppose religion.

Yeah, it can be pretty cool and amazing.
