How about the idiots who think their computer is safe because they turned on Windows Firewall and bought Norton Anti-Virus. *DING* *WINNAR*

Somebody submit the "IPOD in the toilet" story. That would definitely be a contender.

Ya know...

I was planning to post in this thread ranting and raving about lost freedom and foolish security and all that, but OlafTheBent's post just made me laugh.

Thanks, dude.

Wal-Mart rejects + tons of arbitrary authority + broad and vague "guidelines" = badge-heavy tyrants with a God complex.

djthemba: You computer is actually fairly safe if you do that *and* you don't run proggies you find on teh pr0n sites. Personally I do run Windows Firewall and a very good AV package but also I always use a cheap home NAT device; and of course I am very careful what I click on.

Anyways being forced to drink your own milk is pretty gross. Imagine being asked (for some reason) to drink your own semen. Sure, it's harmless but eeeeeewwwwwww!

It's not that bad, the taste is a little off. Kinda like milk thats been sitting out for an hour on the counter. I have had a couple of fresh squirts in my coffiee before, or straight from the tap.

I work in one of the most prominent buildings in Boston (you can always see the building in any shot of the skyline). Their security solution ? To show guards a id card that has your photo on it. No gates requiring you swipe a valid id to grant access to the elevator banks.

And the guards themselves ? I think a majority of them are less than ideal for the job. They have problems granting access to some visitors who are on their security list. But at least I have to give them credit in the end, we haven't had any major security problems that I know of, aside from sthe temporary salesperson going from floor to floor doing coldcalls.

Jument and that little NAT device makes all the difference in the world. If you have windows box sitting LIVE on the internet with all of it's ports being protected by itself... I agree that Firewall and AV are important - but without the NAT to hide behind, you might as well leave it off cuz all it does is provide a false sense of security.

Airport security is freaking hilarious. Somebody should submit the arsehole who siezed the old lady's heart medicine.

A friend of mine threw a rave in one of those developments with a homeowner's association. It was awesome. He cleared out all his furnature for it. The security dude eventually came around. "You guys can't do this!" After some social engineering, the guy was helping out with parking.

My personal favourite?

Every passenger has to show photo ID at check-in, at security and at the gate, right?

Watch the person taking your ID. They compare the name to the name on the ticket and then hand you back the ID. Almost never do they actually compare the face on the photo ID to the face in front of them.

So? What's the point of asking for photo ID? US, Spanish, UK and Canadian customs agents have all commented that I "...look different without the mustache.." which is on my passport photo. I've never heard anyone in an airport say so, in spite of them supposedly "checking" to make sure the person on the ticket is the same person getting on the plane.

I agree with Jument. Having a good anti-virus program and a firewall is essential, but they are far from a magic force field. You still need to watch your surfing. Not to mention what you're surfing with.

I use IE because I am lazy and IMHO with current patches it's reasonably secure. YMMV. I don't think it's accurate to dismiss Windows Firewall. I do not like software firewalls because a user could be tricked into running a program or script that would disable it. It's much more difficult, if not impossible, to trick a user into disabling a hardware firewall. Apart from that fundamental weakness I think Windows Firewall, along with other software firewalls, are goodness.

Bubbles: ample. Very nice. More pix. :)

Nothing that integrated into the OS can be considered reasonably secure.

NAT Device?
Just say router. Yes, we all know you're very, very smart.

AVG. It's free, it's not nearly as bogged down as Norton, it updates more regularly, and for me it's been very effective!

To jump on the technobandwagon, not all routers are NAT devices....

Here is a little concept. not all routers do NAT, another fack is that unless you have the same amount of addresses on both sides you most likely are doing NAPT.

/Watch out you might learn something

Uncle Karl

Watch out, I do know something. Not all routers do NAT, anyone who knows what NAT means/does knows that. Obviously the dude was talking about being behind a hardware firewall, a NAT device, or ... a ROUTER.

It gets tiresome to hear people use the most complicated terms they can in order to subtly convey that they are soooooooo knowledgable. There are lots of instances where saying NAT device is appropriate. Using it in a context where you are trying to say the average computer user as a moron makes you seem like a real big asshat, though.

And by you, I don't mean Uncle Karl, i mean djthemba, who by the way also declared himself *DING WINNAR* on the second post.
