You forgot the "EVERBODY PANIC" part.

2006-08-27 11:45:16 AM
And weathermen and TV studios breathe a sigh of relief. We almost made it to September with nothing to PANIC about weather wise.

How does Cuba get hit with almost every. single. hurricane. before it reaches Florida and not just be a vast wasteland?

/O RLY?

don't touch me there: you're not my uncle...

no i am not a sandbag...

And going for Tampa...will the amateur weather patrol farkers understand you can't extrapolate path projections now...nahh...

2006-08-27 11:48:42 AM
I hope this time when Florida catches another hurricane, we won't rebuild it. The state is sinking (in geologic time) and it just keeps attracting hurricanes. And stupid. I don't think I should have to pay for old people to live in the sun.

And since I'm typing in the same place where Katrina (and the corps of engineers) deposited five feet of water almost a year ago, I feel that I'm perfectly qualified to comment on it.

Thank goodness for Cuba. If it stays over the island, it won't be able to strengthen a lot before hitting the Keys.

faethe in thread about Debby: I, for one, would like to state in this thread, that it is my sincere belief that central Florida, and MOST likely South Florida, is all done for this year.

In other words - we done. Over. No more storms till possibly next year.

or not.... I was hoping you were right.

Spaghetti Eatin' Goombah: and maybe I don't feel compelled to contribute to the rebuilding of your crap city.

Dude, joke. Sorry it was taken the wrong way. NOLA ain't so bad; it has . . . food, and architecture, and corruption (if you're into that).

I don't see what you all are worried about.

2006-08-27 12:03:09 PM
TFA: blah blah something about how Ernesto can do something that the 2005 hurricane season could not, which is have its name retired...

Wait... huh? I haven't been up on things, but this dinky little category 1 is a more viable candidate to have its name retired than, say, Katrina? it was my understanding that Katrina was a pretty devastating hurricane. fill me in here.

2006-08-27 12:05:25 PM
Oh yeah Ernesto............

...if you could avoid hitting Florida, and maybe head over to Cuba, that'd be greeeeat.

Is it just me or does anyone else in louisiana notice that the news caster/weathermen WANT it to hit New Orleans.

2006-08-27 12:09:45 PM
Actually, they've been giving the new folks impact duty and keeping Cantore close (but not too much so).

Still plenty of uncertainty in this track - models have been none too consistent from run to run.

Mugato:How does Cuba get hit with almost every. single. hurricane. before it reaches Florida and not just be a vast wasteland?

In one word: preparedness.

Let's compare both countries, shall we?

-> Both the Cuban Government and the Cuban Media (both public and private Media) tell people to make sure that they're ready for hurricanes starting in early May... while the U.S. Government relies on our privately-owned Media to tell people to be ready for hurricanes... which the U.S. Media does... whenever they want (usually a short sentence during the weather forecast).

-> The Cuban Ministry of Civil Defense (I think that's their name) distributes a hurricane season emergency preparedness inserts in the local newspapers at no cost. These inserts are updated every year with whatever new information there is: evacuation routes, shelters, very detailed lists of what to put in an emergency kit, what kinds of foods to have before the hurricane hits, etc. The newspapers also make thousands of extra copies of those inserts and distribute them to every community in Cuba... once again, free of charge. I'm sure that U.S. Newspapers would be more than happy to distribute those inserts... as long as the Government pays them their full advertisement rates.. because, once again, heaven forbid that we tell a newspaper that they HAVE to do something like this as a public service. Then again, do newspapers in Flori-duh do any of this?

-> The building codes in Cuba are written to *force* (not 'encourage', not 'advise', FORCE) people to build a house that will have a big chance of surviving a hurricane, its winds, and its floods. Florida's building codes have yet to be upgraded so people *have* to build their houses to survive a hurricane because heaven forbid that we tell homebuilders how to build homes.

Cuba survives hurricanes because they're ready... the U.S. is a wasteland because the U.S. continues to make the same mistakes over and over and over....

Ernesto eh? When he comes ashore, what home depot can I find him at to do my yardwork?

...and it just keeps attracting hurricanes.

Yeah, a state that attracts hurricanes. Okay. Dumbass.

I feel it's perfectly reasonable to contribute to the rebuilding efforts. It keeps them off my lawn.

2006-08-27 12:18:17 PM
This was just an affirmative action promotion. I just know it. Ernesto is really a slacker and there are a lot of other hurricanes that deserved promtion over him.

/sarcasm

2006-08-27 12:21:46 PM
Cuba also shuts down the power grid in the affected area before the hurricane makes landfall, in order to keep people from, well, something, I can't really remember. But it seems to keep they're infrastructure intact.

I don't see where it's so hard to realize that, millions of years ago, the same aliens who built the pyramids also build an underground pyramid in Florida that both prohibits higher cognitive functions (like the recognition of sarcasm) and attracts hurricanes. Where do you think Disney World gets its otherworldly power?

2006-08-27 12:27:44 PM
If Floridians forced developers to built houses to withstand hurricanes, damages would be in the millions, not tens of billions.

But developers get their way in Florida, because they want to build cheap houses. Meanwhile, those of us in New England get to pay for idiot Floridians who build houses that wouldn't withstand small gale.

atomsmoosher: Hell, Cuba never seems to get hit.

Katrina missed Cuba but usually tropical storms and hurricanes scrape through Cuba first, usually weakening the storm the longer it's on land. Damage in FL would be a lot worse in a lot of cases if we didn't have that little Communist levy protecting us.

wolfzr2: or not.... I was hoping you were right.

I farked up :( I meant Atlantic Hurricanes - not stupid Gulf Storms. The Bermuda High is where it should be - the weather in Orlando went back to normal after Alberto (which was really weird). That big ridge of freaky high pressure that had been sitting stationary over the state and causing all the dry weather moved on.

Then, you know, the gulf started acting up :(

I HOPE I was right.
