It's not about the money--but he wants $10 million, and he's going to use it towards a charity that gives out $1000 scholarships?

2006-08-24 11:39:37 AM
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that his case was so ridiculous that he couldn't find a lawyer to take it.
Not because he thinks he can devote more time to it than a lawyer could.

Ecstasy didn't kill this child. Bad parenting killed the child...ecstasy just made him forget he was a retard.

2006-08-24 11:42:59 AM
I'd jump off a pier, too, if that dude was my Dad.

2006-08-24 11:47:50 AM
ecstacy didn't make him jump off of a pier, stupidity did. darwin wins again.

2006-08-24 12:01:06 PM
Imagine that... A guy named Rothman suing everyone he can think of....

/Just saying what your thinking.

2006-08-24 12:03:57 PM
Well ofcourse he's going to need 10 million dollars to get over this.
Drugs ain't free, you know.

I'LL SUE YOU IN ENGLAND!!!!!

2006-08-24 01:42:19 PM
Wait, Weren't it the lawyers who were responsible for crazy ass lawsuits? I thought all you had to do was drown all of them and we'll have no more crazy suits.

Next, you'll be telling me that it's actually the clients who are blinded by the prospect of fortune. Crazy. Imagine that.

2006-08-24 01:42:24 PM
Pro Se? No way!

/Insert "you have a fool for a client" joke here

2006-08-24 01:42:33 PM
From the amount of lawsuits this guy has burdened the court with about this case, I wouldn't be surprised if no lawyer wanted to touch it.

/Sounds like a typical NJ family

This reminds me of a situation 15 years ago in Murfreesboro, Tenn., when a guy got stinking drunk and decided it would be funny to pee on a power transformer. He had to climb over two fences with barbed wire, and get up the side of the machine, about 12 feet.

Then he started to unload all that beer, and don't you know the path of the electricty?

His parents sued TVA

hey, i know where the kid was coming from. i've done E, and the urge to jump off a bridge is almost overwhelming. i swallow a pill, and all of a sudden the only thing i'm concerned with is finding the nearest bridge to jump off. sometimes i'll even get to the railing of a bridge and the only thing keeping me from jumping is the thought that if i do it this time, i won't be able to do it next time...

/everyone's sarcasm detectors working this morning?

He should sue Darwin.

We should sue him for the mental distress reading this story has given us.

Hey Mom !
I just got a $1000 check from the My Dumbass Kid Jumped Off a Bridge Scholarship Fund !

2006-08-24 01:49:20 PM
FTA: did not treat the case as a possible homicide

He jumped from a bridge. Wouldn't that be suicide. Follow your son you paternal failure. I think the Po Po would have investigated it if they had reason to believe someone had pushed him off.

2006-08-24 01:49:49 PM
Thank you Lisa Fleisher for that poorly written artical, ohh and as for the asshat father...go swallow a knife.

2006-08-24 01:50:23 PM
Why is everyone always pissed at plaintiffs?

Be pissed at either YOUR FELLOW PEERS who award the enormous judgments, yourself for making every attempt to get out of jury service, or the legal system that systematically fills jury boxes with our nation's stupidest citizens.

This isn't a problem in other civilized countries where they actually aim to get the best, not the worst, people to serve on juries.

2006-08-24 01:52:37 PM
His father, David Rothman, charges that the police department did not follow proper procedures, did not treat the case as a possible homicide and showed a general lack of professionalism.

That's a new gang thing: if you flash your lights at a passing car they hunt you down and force you to take an ecstasy pill. Unfortunately this college student was currenly cramming for his underwater basketweaving course and became really confused.

2006-08-24 01:54:53 PM
David Rothman said his motivation is not the money

So why not sue for $2 then?

2006-08-24 01:58:26 PM
Alright, got another one of my links approved, thanks Fark!

This case is asinine. Tons of college students (and younger) come to the beach, get totally wasted on booze or drugs and then do all types of stupid stuff. Then, their out of state parents always complain that someone here should have been looking out for them.

Yeah, right. But stuff like this goes on every year here (as well as other tourist areas I would imagine).

2006-08-24 01:58:27 PM
So why not sue for $2 then?

Wow. You're bright. Because the City would pay the $2 and the case would be over.

Having said all of that, this case will be dismissed for failure to state a claim for which relief can be granted.

He is claiming that the police did not investigate the death as a homicide, but even if that is true, it is not the cause of his loss and does not change anything after the fact.

The fact that he is acting as his own lawyer tells this lawyer one thing -- that he went to get legal help and they told him he didn't have a case.

2006-08-24 02:01:10 PM
Wow, you know you have a shiatty case when you can't get a single lawyer to take it. Seriously, that alone says volumes about this whole thing.

2006-08-24 02:01:37 PM
this is so stupid i can't even comment.

wait...

1. have nothing, sue for millions
2. even if you get a few grand, you get something
3. profit!

2006-08-24 02:04:51 PM
I've never done E but I'm just going to come in here and say that stupidity made this person jump off a bridge, not the drug. I once had a friend who snorted somewhere near 6 E pills in one night and well, you guessed it, he's fine. Oh, and the "puts holes in your brain" thing, it's not true.

2006-08-24 02:05:16 PM
Let's hope Darwin gets the dad's ass too.

I've never heard of anyone winning a case when they acted as their own attorney.

S'pose this one will be the exception to the rule?

/doubts it

2006-08-24 02:08:07 PM
The lawsuit states that the Rothmans suffered "severe mental and emotional distress, pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment of life."

Is that a euphamism for depression or death?

Just a guess here, but I'm going to figure that the police were correct, his son was hopped up on ecstacy and killed himself and the father blamed the police because he doesn't want to believe the truth that his son was a druggie.

/just a theory

I disagree. Washington State U is filled with E-tards. I haven't seen scans of their brains, but I know it wasn't Busch light that made them that way.

man this shiat annoys me.
People are suing for everything. Pretty soon you'll be able to get sued if someone doesn't like the way you look at them, hell maybe this has happend already.

\shame the kid died
\\not the city's fault
\\not taxpayers fault

why do conservatards feel duty-bound to do the insurance industry's bidding and demonize everyone who brings a suit to court? RTFA, idiots.

"His father, David Rothman, charges that the police department did not follow proper procedures, did not treat the case as a possible homicide and showed a general lack of professionalism.

The city generally does not comment on pending litigation, city spokesman Mark Kruea said.

Rothman, who is acting as his own lawyer, said he believes his son may have been robbed.

David Rothman said his motivation is not the money - which he said he would give to charity, including a foundation set up in his son's name that gives two $1,000 scholarships each year to students from his alma mater, Toms River High School East in Toms River, N.J."

He's not suing because his son died on E, conservatards, he's suing because he believes it may have been a homicide and he feels the city didn't take that possibility seriously.

I mean, really. EVERY time conservatards complain about lawsuits you find out it takes about 2 minutes reading to discover there's a legitimate reason for it.

Wow, you know you have a shiatty case when you can't get a single lawyer to take it. Seriously, that alone says volumes about this whole thing.

It's quite possible that the lawyers in the area know better than to take a case against the police department and against the city. For example, in the city that I live in I was told that if I ever have a case against the city that it would never go to trial because the city and the police department has a strong history of delaying the trial until the statute of limitations expires.

Same could be for the MB area.

I've been having kid's with my cousin and raising them on paint chips. they're almost old enough to venture out in the world and get Darwined. I've got an attourney on retainer, and hope to retire soon.

"Nothing I can do can bring back my son but at least this might help for the next person in that situation. will punish the good people of Myrtle Beach by usurping their tax dollars and their police dept's ability to protect people because my son was an utter moron."
