CIA to carry a suspected terrorist to another country where he was tortured

Sheesh. Talk about an America-hater. We give the guy a free trip in a private jet and he still biatches.

"Does it come with Velcro straps too?"
That would depend, is it carry on or strap on luggage?

Leather chairs and TV! Lucky damn terrorist....

/I heard that this senator once rode on a plane that was owned by a company that owned a plane that I puked in. I will never vote for him again.

Right up until the "tortured in Jordan" part, sure. After that? Not so much.

2006-08-20 07:02:51 AM
Probably not.

2006-08-20 07:07:34 AM
...torture, known as "rendition,"

That's got a nice ring to it.

"Did I say torture camp? I meant rendition camp!"

2006-08-20 07:08:26 AM
But remember, the trip to Jordan was FREE

2006-08-20 07:10:25 AM
Just being in Jordan is torture. That's probably what the article is referring to.

2006-08-20 07:19:53 AM
You should not be so negative about these extraodrifnary renditions to thrid world countries where prisoners are then interrogated by local authrities and the CIA.

It is not like innocent people ever get kidnapped, flown halfway around the world, put in camps where they are tortured and mistreated by mistake. And if that ever happens because people at the CIA can't be brothered to verify your identity they are sure to release you months later on the condition that you never tell anyone of your orderal. So no harm doen really is there?

Just ask Khalid El-Masari, a German citizen who got mistaken for a terrorist and spend some time in a torture camp in Afghanistan thanks to the bumbling CIA.

\I guess it is still all right as long as it could never happen to you.

There are an unusually high number of stories about planes this morning. Coincidence? The SoaP references practically write themselves.

Even the PLANES can't redeem themselves in this country.

2006-08-20 07:23:47 AM
Khalid El-Masri?

I'm pretty sure his case was dismissed.
But I was wrong once in 1992 so, who knows, maybe it's time.

2006-08-20 07:26:04 AM
Loki-L: Just ask Khalid El-Masari,

Awwww, it's in your link.
What a farkup that case was... Just glad I wasn't wrong.

On Thursday, May 18, 2006 U.S. Federal District Judge T.S. Ellis, III in Washington dismissed a lawsuit El-Masri filed against the CIA and three private companies allegedly involved with his transport, explaining that a public trial would "present a grave risk of injury to national security."[15] Ellis also acknowledged that if Masri's allegations were true, then he deserved compensation from the US government.

CIA torture plane? What another grand example of the 'FARK Headline Hyperbole Principle.' The aircraft was once used to transport a suspected terrorist, not used for torture.

"All I want to say is that there was 'before' 9/11 and 'after' 9/11. After 9/11 the gloves come off... 'No Limits' aggressive, relentless, worldwide pursuit of any terrorist who threatens us is the only way to go..."

Director of the CIA's Counterterrorism Centre from 1999 until May 2002, in a statement before the 9/11 Commission

What is your point? Do you think that the guy is a liar and made it all up just because a judge dismissed the case for national security reasons? It is not like the judge dismissed the case because it wasn't true. There has been planty of backup for his story from all kinds of sources as is also quoted in the article.

Please, PLEASE tell me you are not trying to disparage AI here. I know some people love to hate on AI because they dare to accuse the USA of human rights abuses, but they accuse everybody of human rights abuses (because everybody is committing them). I wonder if the plane dates from the Clinton Administration being they were the ones who started the Rendition policy.

What the hell does a state governors campaign need a private jet for?
$1500 dollars an hour operating cost for that plane.

Interestingly, perhaps, Cofer Black now runs Blackwater USA, a "security" firm that provides mercenary armies to those who can afford them.

These guys are pretty scary, too. Highly paid, well-equipped but not bound by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. There have been many reports of them running around Iraq killing civilians for sport and generally pissing off the the poor schmucks in our "official" Army because they can do whatever the hell they want and get paid five times what your average grunt gets paid.

Big Sam I wonder if the plane dates from the Clinton Administration being they were the ones who started the Rendition policy.

B... b... b... but Clinton!

I have no doubt that torture went on during Bubba's two terms. The difference is, his guys didn't get erections while doing it.

My question is why is this a story? I mean I understand the argument of should the US or should the US not have a "rendition" policy... but who the fark cares that some candidate for govenor is flying around in a plane that once was used by the CIA? The current owner did not lease it to the CIA, it was the prior owner. I mean just because this $100 bill I am holding was once used in a drug deal does that make me a drug dealer?

/please note the $100 is hypothetical, I only wish I had a $100 bill.

The fact that this is somehow newsworthy is known as "magical thinking" (as opposed to rational thinking). The attributes of the inanimate object are somehow affected by a past use of that object. The inanimate object is somehow guilty by association and current users of that object therefore also share in the guilt.

The dismissal had nothing to do with the merits of the case, and was a frightening miscarriage of justice. Basically the court let the government say "providing any information in open court would make us look bad, so we're going to say it would damage national security".

/Shudder

First: It's not News it's Fark.com Weird coincidences are a big part of Fark.com

Second: Your arguemnt would be correct if and only if the politican and the airplane had ended up together by pure chance alone. But if as it seems to be the case the connection between torture flights and politico flights is deeper than that it all falls apart. Nobody might be able to prove that the group that ended up buying the plane from the CIA and then providing it to the candidate did so becuase they have deeper connections to both, but it does not seem completly unlikely. The best you can say is that the politican is friednly with/in the pocket of an interest group that somehow manged to acquire a used CIA aircraft.

Third: Even if there is nothing behinmd this there is still the symbolism. I fully agree that people who believe in symbols are idiots, fools and morons unfortunately they are also in the vast majority.

If you got the $100 bill out of an ATM or something like that you are in the clear.

If the bill has gone through half a dozend hands between you and the drug dealer and you are only linked to it through six-degrees of sepration than it is okay too.

If you got it directly from the drug dealers own hands than you might very well have a problem.

If the bill was lend to you by a friend who got the bill directly from the drug dealer under unclear circumstances and you are now indebted to somebody who has an unspecified business relationship with a drug dealer it might at the very least create the apperance of improperity.

Please also note than anybody linked through six-degrees of sepration to terrorist money appears to be guilty by current standards of 'going after the money' in the global war on terrorism. Also note that while simply holding one $100 bill might not make you a drug dealer having a suficient quantitiy of bills on your person makes you a drug dealer and will get the money taken away from you no matter where the bills actually came from.
