Yeah, I don't think there's going to be any easy way to ease a phobia caused directly by inducing pain to toddlers with something.

----> I can see that. I mean a razor blade can be an intimidating looking object, but no one fears the Lady Bic.

Man...

Just say the syringe is full of MORPHINE and I will say "Doc, stick that silly thing anywhere you want."

2-5 minutes later, I'll feel bliss.

I started a new job that required me to have a bunch of needles jammed into me for drawing blood, TB tests and vaccinations.

The one they pulled out for the vaccination was by far the most intimidating looking of all of them, but hurt the least by far. Gotta find out what kind those were and bring my own to the doctor's from now on.

They should put things that people should hate on them, like ones for Fundie christians that shows gay sex and smug university students. Maybe send some with dradles and Joel Weinstein to Mel for his detox.

palexc It hurt the least cuz they just put it into muscle, not into a vein or between two different layers of skin (like blood draws or TB). If you brought your own they could use it for giving you vaccinations, but not for IV's, blood draws, or TB tests. Well maybe they could use it for a TB test but it would hurt a lot more.

TB tests HURT. I'm glad I failed one so I never have to take the damn things again.

A long time ago I made myself get over that fear...and then I started giving blood. As many surgeries on my foot as I've been through the last several years, then giving birth by C-section, it's a lot easier not being freaked out by needles.

Now my sister was the type of child who required Mom and at least one nurse to hold her down if she needed a penicillin shot. I just tried to relax and pretend that I was just going to get a pinch. The fun part was, when we lived near Pontiac, MI, we had a pediatrician who was very shot-happy.

The really cool part was we got to keep the empty syringes afterward.

It's all in the mind. Just repeat it's not gonna hurt over and over. It works.

A lot of the problem with the syringe is the appearance. Eventually, there will be some effort put into making it look like anything but a syringe. Like what they've done with thermometers.

I was never afraid of needles until I had to have chemo. Something about getting an inch long needle stuck in your chest every two weeks will screw you up.

I don't know how long butterfly needles have been in use but back in about 80/81 I was given the test to see if I had Diabeties, at that time it involved Have nothing to eat/drink the night before and then 10! hours of have your blood drawn every hour.
Anyways the nurse was talking about how gret athese were and it would be easy, till it took her aboiut 4-5 times to get my vein and them the Freaking thing would keep slipping out.
After the first 3-4 hours they gave up and just swapped needles but imagine having a needle just moving all about in a 10yr olds elbow and wonder why just typing this has me looking like a t-rex (OF course clean bill of health so all that for nothing)

You can cover a needle in glittering penguin stickers and I'm still going to feel woozy. I don't even look at the damn things and I feel anxious because they're going to be used on me.

You don't fool me, Mr. Butterfly. I know your tricks.

/still needs sleep.

I used to be terrified of having blood drawn, I could never look when they stuck the needle in. Then I went out with a guy who was into biting. Not love bites, biting so hard he was drawing blood.

Now when I go for blood-work, I stare the motherfarker down.

/thus concludes another edition of "told u i was hardcore" theater
