Someone should open a business like that just to pressure the Sam Goodies' and the MusicLands' to jump on the bandwaggon. And that would just hurt the RIAA that much more!

I live in Melbourne, Australia and we have had CD copy machine's for age's ,, me personally i would never use them (cus i got my own burner) cheaper to buy a $400 burner than make 100 cd's ,, but who would want to make 100 cd ;)

Australians are probably bitter about being consigned to DVD Region 4. It'd be fun if they became the next Taiwan.

This was test marketed in the US like eight years ago. The chain record store I worked in at the time (MusicLand) had considered getting one for our store (we were near a big tourist hub, you see) but we didn't have the floor space for it. Nothing new here, move along.

Virgin Megastore in Times Square has a thing where you can make a mix CD for like 20$. Of course I could do that at home for about 3$ and Kazaa Frustration Time.

Slayerswine I distinctly remember seeing that exact sort of thing at a Tower Records in Los Angeles as much as ten years ago. I think it cost more than $5 though.

There's a machine that does that by me, $2 a cd, it's called "Virion's Computer" and I'll even print a label for $1.50 more.

I fail to see why such devices should be illegal. I mean, would you ban photocopiers, VCR's, or cassette tape decks -- even though they may all be used to copy material which is copyrighted...? Of course not. All are legal, and a device used to copy CD's simply falls into the same category. However, I do say the heck with such a vending machine. 5 years from now, you'll be able to buy your own CD copier at WalMart for $99.99, plus tax. And the cable to connect it to the USB port on your home PC (and then the web) will be another $10.00, or so. The music industry -- if they were wise -- would accept this as an upcoming fact of life, and start spending more of their time trying to figure out how to make a buck with it (which might mean signing more artists, for example, or promoting less commercial music, etc... I suspect that there is actually potential here for the major lables to make even more $$$ than they do now.) Just my humble opinion.

This proposed law will damn the USA to tecnological inferiority. Is this what they want? You can bet that our best hardware companies will move to less restrictive waters and the there will be countless layoffs.

If this passes, I'll never buy another RIAA approved CD, watch a movie or buy an MPAA approved DVD. At least until it is overturned. These guys are going too far, they are now displaying full anti-trust behavior.

If Fritz Holling is your representative, let him know how disappointed you are at him, then vote him the hell out. This is why we need to vote, folks, to keep these jackasses from killing this country.

Yeah,really,L337 Used to be the day I'd say "Hey,I got this new Elvis Costello cassette,let me make you a copy for your car" Did it all the time,and where was the RIAA then? And oh yeah,the cassette player was a cardboard box with 2 magnets and 2 mice in spinning wheels making it work...And doggonit,we liked it!! (just riffing off yours,good one!)

We've already got CD-copying vending machines here in Australia and they appears to be quite legal thanks to some old public photocopier legislation. (Breaking copyright is left as an exercise for the user.) If I had my camera with me it would only take me 20 minutes to walk up the campus, take a photo, come back and post it. I don't see them being used all that much though...
