craigdamage: Sir Lord Baltimore??

I keep hearing really great stuff about them.

Sir Lord Baltimore is cool. I have the CD of their two albums. Great stuff, very heavy, not unlike Sabbath. Very ahead of their time. They recorded two albums in 1970 and 1971 before disappearing in obscurity.

Can't disagree with you on the B.O.C. call. I went through a phase listening to them, during which I picked up every one of their albums.

/they DID go through a distinctly ghey period, however

Biographyby Richie Unterberger

Long esteemed by collectors as one of the first American heavy metal bands, Sir Lord Baltimore (from Brooklyn) released a couple of little-known albums in the early '70s. Some specialists have raved about these as among the more innovative and eclectic early metal efforts......

Cool!

Sounds to me to be like an American BUDGIE.

BUDGIE was pretty cool.

Kalior: /best prog-metal band ever

That's like being the smartest retard on the short bus.

I phased out of metal/thrash, but every track on that slayer disc is amazing. It shifted a genre of basically. That same label american (a guy basically, some one who did the latest j cash stuff with him doing nin covers and what not) was doing beastie boys license to ill and what have you at the same exact time.

I know I am totally late to this party, but these guys are missing so many influential metal bands that their list bypassed sad and went straight to humorous.

And while I do not expect anyone to agree with me, I think that one of the best metal albims I have ever heard is:

artistdirect.com

And they've reformed as a band as well, so bonus for me.

why do top lists always suck so bad?

king diamond in the top 10? totally stupid.

has anyone mentioned cryptopsy? good stuff.

I think most true metal fans would agree that Scandinavian metal bands deserve a top 50 of their own
-Children of Bodom
-Dark Tranquility
-In Flames
-Opeth
-Borknagar
-Dissection
-Dimmu Borgir
-Arch Enemy
-other afformentioned Swedes

What the fark is with the King Diamond hate?

The man is a bloody genius. He has the most uniquely awesome voice, his songwriting is stellar and memorable, his spirit and atmosphere is unequalled, his live performances among the best ever.

King Diamond naysayers ought to be thrown alive into an oven.

2006-08-15 08:20:25 PM
I was waiting for someone to reply with the (oh you must pick apart types of music so you must be a total loser) bullshiat. I hope you feel better and all up yourself for it.

good ole flopp: king diamond in the top 10? totally stupid.

Agreed. Taste in music is subjective, but some things go beyond personal taste. King Diamond combined all the pretense of prog metal, the dime store theatrics of Kiss, and the voice of...wel...King Diamond, and wrapped it up in mediocre songwriting.

I liked Mercyful Fate over the self-titled King Diamond stuff. Though I giggled like a schoolgirl when I saw there was a KD song in Clerks 2

If you were going to name Swedes, at least name Bathory, Entombed, Candlemass, or even Dissection or Dark Tranquillity!

With the exception of Dark Tranquillity I give that list a shoulder shrug and one "meh'.

Most true metal fans would look at your list, wonder "Where the fark is Bathory, Burzum, Amorphis, Therion, Entombed or Darkthrone?", laugh at you for pretending you know something, and dismiss your Century Media-fellating list as being written by a wet-behind-the-ears ex-Slipknot fan.

/I normally wouldn't be that mean, but you DID bring up the "most true metal fans blah blah blah" shtick, so...

2006-08-15 08:23:56 PM
fails for no mention of the following:

Motorhead
Bolt Thrower
Morbid Angel (they defined US death metal)
Sepultura (anything up to Chaos AD)
Napalm Death
Cannibal Corpse
Opeth (come the fark on!!! NOBODY does it like these guys! I'd pick Blackwater Park)
Meshuggah
Cradle of Filth/Dimmu Borgir

Any top 50 metal album list that has Metalica ..and justice for all, all the way down at #23 is sooo not credible

I concure. The scary thing is she sounds more hardcore then the man she was brought into replace.

2006-08-15 08:25:04 PM
....oh yeah,

has anyone ever heard of a band called DEEP PURPLE?

might need to mention them to keep this legit.

"Speed King" and "Fireball" alone and not mention the entire "Machine Head" album make them one of Metal's true originals.

2006-08-15 08:25:28 PM
Totally invalid list.

Not one single album by Judas Priest, and where British Steel should be in the top 5 at a minimum, it isn't even on the list.

And Rush, Caress of Steel at 50? First, I wouldn't even consider that album "Heavy Metal", and I love Rush...

The people that made that list are farking idiots.

Heavy Metal in Egypt
Toronto Star | Submitted by: sumdumfuk
The music was loud and the tattooed fans were wild, dancing and swaying in flashing strobe lights to the crashing sounds of heavy metal songs. Suddenly, the music stopped. The band leader grasped the mike and announced: "It's prayer time."

Some things go indeed beyond personal taste, and everything you've said about King Diamond is demonstrably false. With the exception of his voice being King Diamond's, maybe. Glad you at least got that right.

Demon of the Fall: With the exception of Dark Tranquillity I give that list a shoulder shrug and one "meh'.

Fine, but please don't keep any pretention at knowing anything about metal, as you're obviously yet-another-clueless-Opeth-fanboi.

BTW, I'm a huge Rush fan, but Caress Of Steel is the pits.

theteacher, I've seen a Christian metal band that rocked. It might've been Skillet, I don't remember - it was a street festival with tons of music from all genres.

But I loved the shirt that said, "If you're happy and you know it, bang your head."

Seeing that list....If you havent, pick up the Led Zeppelin box set.

If not that.

Zeppelin "I", "II", "IV", "Houses of the Holy", and "Physical Graffiti".
All worthy albums to own.
You can also see why it may just be easier (and cheaper) goin with the box set.

That and I'd say (repeating myself sorry folks):

Alice In Chains - "SAP", "EP", "Dirt", "Jar of Flies".
SoundGarden - "Badmotorfinger", "Louder then Love", "UltraMega OK".
Tool
Primus

EARLY Metallica - (Before the Black Album. well....even the Black Albums OK I guess).
Blue Oyster Cult .
Iron Maiden .
Rush - (I'd say maybe start with "Moving Pictures" and go from there....not everyone likes Rush's sound).
Black Sabbath - get "We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll" and go from there.

Just my opinion here, but seeing the other albums your listening to, these are probably some your gonna like.

Demon of the Fall: I just don't see how someone can be a fan of Dark Tranquility and somehow dismiss At the Gates. Why can't us Scandiavian fellators unite?

To be fair, At the Gates is the most deserving one of your list, as they were at least innovative for the time. They are vastly overrated and nowhere near as memorable or talented as Dark Tranquillity, but at least they're not Opeth or Soilwork or N*Flaymz. Also, I sort of blame them for Trivium and all the other watered-down Gothencore shiat they helped spawn.

But you shrugged off Bathory and Candlemass, so you still suck. :P

I liked Mercyful Fate much better than his solo stuff back in the day, but wasn't a big fan of them either. I was seriously into metal through most of the eighties, but found his face-painted schtick a little over the top even then.

2006-08-15 08:33:40 PM
This dude had a "Top 50" list featuring about 10 artists. Great variety displayed there...

2006-08-15 08:33:58 PM
not a bad list, tho of course I have to take issue with the lack of any Overkill or Sepultura albums on there. The order is a bit weird, having Black Sabbath's Sabotage above any of their previous albums is a mistake. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath shouldn't be above any released before it, either.

Any top metal album list has to include the following bands:

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Megadeth
Overkill
Sepultura
Slayer
Pantera

I'd personally add Suicidal Tendencies, but I can understand why some wouldn't include them as their albums are kinda hit or miss from track to track.

Piece of Mind was the first metal album I bought. I wore that cassette out in about three months. Rust in Peace, yeah Megadeth's best, but I would have switched it with Reign in Blood.

Someone said there was no Priest? WTF!?!? Screaming For Vengeance was kick ass. Defenders was pretty good too, definitely better than Rainbow.

Diary of a Madman should have been in the top ten. I do like how he gave props to King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. Sure his voice took some getting used to, but his band was one of the best ever. I don't know how many times I listened to Them while shrooming.

Hmmmm, Operation Mindcrime isn't there? Too bad.
