And they're either jewish or italian.

2006-08-15 11:56:38 AM
The whole story behind "Saving Private Ryan" was inspired by British people.

Think about THAT.

2006-08-15 11:57:24 AM
Ahh, the obligatory "stir the pot" link.

The producers apologised, and the soldier thought nothing of it. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Cool, another greenlight!

This really earns the asinine tag. If you are going to make a movie, do your research. As if cashing in on tragedies wasn't bad enough, they couldn't take the 5 minutes to talk to the person the movie is about (to my knowledge) to maybe get some perspective?

Like hell they overlooked it.

2006-08-15 11:59:47 AM
Too bad Stone didn't write the screenplay.

I'll bet he would have thrown in a zinger...or five.

....everything that's going on in the world, and THIS is what you want to bring to our attention??

Did you bother to RTFA, or were you in a hurry to get a greenlight? They admitted they couldn't find him.

"World Trade Center producer Michael Shamberg said that they knew about Sgt. Thomas's role in the rescue, but were unable to find him when creating the film."

Still nothing to see here.

I hear the real reasoning is that focus groups suspected the original actor was portraying a pickpocket

Dam' shame that his color matters... to anyone. Doesn't seem to matter to our actual hero.

CtrlAltDelete: The whole story behind "Saving Private Ryan" was inspired by British people.

Aye, it was also the British who captured the enigma machine from a German u-boat.

/The movie "U-571" has Americans doing it.

Race don't matter in this story.

2006-08-15 12:10:49 PM
Would it be a media story if the guy was white, and was portrayed as black?

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I find that too convinient. They couldn't find anyone who knew him enough to say "Hey, he's black?" They couldn't find hide or hair of him until it was too late and he just happened to show up?

This isn't big news and I didn't expect it to go green. However if Hollywood is going to try to exploit these kinds of things, they should at least try to pretend like they made an effort.

There are no minorities in NYC. I watched Friends, I know.

2006-08-15 12:35:15 PM
Does it matter? It's a whoring piece of shiat anyway.

2006-08-15 12:46:25 PM
PseudoNic - there was a German!

/not sure that helps knock your point though.

submitter: New World Trade center movie "forgets" to check on race of main character. Because only white people live in New York

Because we all know that a minor character's race is more important than the events that happened. Golly, those filmmakers had better call him up and apologize that their movie wasn't more true to real life. Oh wait. They did.

TravelingFreakshow: Did you bother to RTFA, or were you in a hurry to get a greenlight? They admitted they couldn't find him.

But they obviously knew he existed, right? Why didn't they bother to ask witnesses who had been there working with him at Ground Zero?

randomX: Like hell they overlooked it.

Or the man they chose was the best actor for the job. Skin color isn't supposed to matter.

Even the guy whom they based the character on doesn't care. No big deal.

Okay, this article seems to say otherwise. But I was basing my comment on this article from last night...

Philbb : Aye, it was also the British who captured the enigma machine from a German u-boat.

Actually a number of Engima machines, Enigma codes, etc. were captured by both British and American forces.

The first capture of Enigma material occurred in February 1940, when rotors VI and VII, the wiring of which was at that time unknown, were captured from the crew of U-33. On May 7, 1941, the Royal Navy captured a German weather ship, together with cipher equipment and codes. They did it again shortly afterwards. And two days later U-boat U-110 was captured, complete with Enigma machine, codebook, operating manual and other information. In addition to U-110, Naval Enigma machines or settings books were captured from a total of 7 U-boats and 8 German surface ships, including U-boats U-505 (1944) and U-559 (1942), two German weather-reporting trawlers, and a small vessel (the Krebs) captured during a raid on the Lofoten Islands off Norway.

Perhaps no one is upset by that. I don't mind that they cast differently. What irks me to no end is that they didn't make an effort to find the real heroes and have a little more fact in there. You can't expect me to believe that no one in all of NYC, his family, friends, job, people who have briefly met him, etc. could be reached.

It isn't that they misrepresented him. It is that they didn't appear to have made any effort.

2006-08-15 01:15:36 PM
i have no problem with this because i am incapable of relating to a character on an emotional level if they are not the same race as me.

2006-08-15 01:16:20 PM
link farked already?

2006-08-15 01:16:31 PM
interesting.

remember the uproar on how there was going to be a statue, inspired by that photograph of the 3-4 white firefighters at Ground Zero, and the statue was made to have 1-2 of the firefighters have "black" or hispanic features? "OMG don't change their race to reflect your precious need for diversity, you're playing fast and loose with the facts! That's not how it really went down!" looks like the shoe is on the other hand, que no? ay dios mio.

/where's the "that's racist!" kid when you need him?

2006-08-15 01:18:29 PM
dammit, i was just about to submit this.

Thats Oliver Stone for ya. Getting his facts straight all the time....

2006-08-15 01:19:38 PM
The only time race is relevant in Hollywood is when it's one of those silly movies like "Black Knight" or "White Chicks."

Other than that, STFU and live your life.

I don't want to come off sounding like Ann Coulter (I really, really don't want to!), but this has been bothering me ever since 9/11:

With all due deference to the victims and widows, why do we only hear about the affluent people who commuted in from the Jersey suburbs to their 6 figure jobs? What about all the staff at WTC: the cleaning ladies, the security guards, and the like? Didn't these people die/lose someone? These people eeking out a living and working hard to support their families? Why don't we hear from or about them?

2006-08-15 01:20:50 PM
Given the fact that movies with black lead actors and actresses are no longer unusual and have proven to be quite capable of making money, this strikes me as a rather frantic attempt to find something to be outraged about.

2006-08-15 01:21:14 PM
And in Master and Commander, the "bad guys" were really Americans.

2006-08-15 01:22:20 PM
I think we're all missing the REAL point here... What about all those people that died in the empty wing of the pentagon... wait a minute.

2006-08-15 01:22:36 PM
Uh, Diogenes
What about all the staff at WTC: the cleaning ladies, the security guards, and the like?

It was daytime, all the hired help were gone.

Wait, you mean NYC is populated by more than one ethnicity?

2006-08-15 01:24:12 PM
Who cares, the fact that they changed the race of a character is less offensive to me then the vulturing that this film is.

I hope everyone who makes money off of this sort of thing DIAF.

That includes Giuliani and Bush who basically built their careers on it.

2006-08-15 01:24:52 PM
I don't care. I am so sick of the whole 9/11 thing anyway. People act like it's the only tragedy that's ever happened. Hell, what about the people killed by the anthrax in the mail? Where's their Hollywood telethon? Where's their Oliver Stone movie?

2006-08-15 01:25:20 PM
Every one of you is a pedophile, and should be arrested!

/actually, I wanted to post that on the Miss Teen USA thread, but I'm not TotalFark.

Uh....no.

Sgt Fritz Niland was the actual inspiration for _Saving Private Ryan_.

Although, someone might argue, that since Fritz grew up about 2 miles from Canada (just like 500,000 other people that live in Western NY) and since Canada is almost British, you can almost almost (two removed) claim that SPR was based on a british story.

Explain to me why everyone is so caught up in the RACECARD when the hero doesn't mind. This post was the only racist thing about this article.
Grow-up

Well done. I laughed.
