AM I THE FIRST ONE TO MENTION SBARRO??????

Seriously, I'm from Chicago, living in South Florida (overpopulated with New Yorkers). Chicago pizza rules them all, hands down.

Lou Malnati's, beeotch.

Suck it, NY.

And since I can't get a decent slice in Florida, I'll take those $1 Totino's pizzas over any NY slice any day of the week.

So, this Chicago pizza everyone is talking about? That's deep dish, right? I've never been to Chicago, but since I don't really care for deep dish, I can't imagine I would like Chigago pizza.

Valentinos is the best pizza in Omaha. Zios is pretty darn good, but they opened up a Lanskys in Bellevue and I think that's better than Zios. Vals, Lanskys, then Zios.

I hate people who like Godfathers. Everyone claims that the one they eat at is the best and all the others aren't any good, but i have yet to eat at one that didn't taste like recycled Dominoes. I won a gift certificate to one a while back and let it expire. Even free I won't eat that crep.

bheilig, you're not kidding about the Cheeseboard. I went to Berkeley, discovered the place in SOPHOMORE year (as opposed to freshman year). It's been 4 years and I haven't had a bad pie from there yet.

Hell, I stayed in the area for grad school just because I knew I'd miss the food. Still go back to eat there.

How many people can honestly say they chose a school around a nearby pizza place? ;-\ You owe it to yourself to try the Cheeseboard if you're ever in the Bay.

Seb - some of the chicago pizza I was talking about was thin crust. Despite what is for some reason commonly believed, we make a damn good thin crust.

Summary of thread for those on a time crunch:

Farkers from NY: NY HAS THE BEST PIZZA!!!

Farkers that live in Chicago: CHICAGO PIZZA BLOWS SHIATTY NY PIZZA AWAY!!!

Farkers that live outside of Chicago and NY: MY OBSCURE TOWN HAS THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, WAY BETTER THAN SHIATTY NY OR CHICAGO PIZZA!!!

I just like pizza and beer on a Saturday afternoon. Doesn't matter from where. Is that so wrong???

Blondies, San Francisco. Had it 10 years ago, looks like it still has good reviews on yahoo.

Haven't found anything good yet in San Diego, I'll have to try out pizza port.

My favorite pizza places are both on 11th Ave. in Columbus, OH. Catfish Biff's is greasy, salty deliciousness, perfect when you're stumbling back from a night of drinking. They sell it by the slice, and it's usually ready for you when you walk in. Adriatico's is thick-crusted, with big chunks of toppings and the most perfect sweet pizza sauce. Both great places.

2006-08-14 12:29:08 AM
Alrightt, I'm originally from the south suburbs of Chicago.
My favorites are: Nancy's, Beggar's, Baraccos, and Aurelios. YUM.
Just got back from San Francisco. Not so great pizza. But I lived.

Technically the NYers didn't say theirs was the best. Only that certain places are the best in NYC. The Chicago folks seem to have a complex. I will be visiting in November and have every intention of tasting a proper Chicago slice. I also have every intention of NOT walking to the local corner but planning it out. The point about NY is that your typical corner pizza spot CAN be chosen randomly because most places are good. And given the right eye you know in advance if the slice under the glass is average, good, or great.

My brilliant contribution is that you can't claim to have the best 'pizza' if it involves elaborate toppings. There needs to be some other category. I will say that there was this place in Mayfield Heights just east of cleveland that had an amazing alfredo sauce pizza. Clearly in the 'special' category. I've had too many people rave about some pizza spot and the reason its good is that they know how to distract you from their crap sauce and inferior cheese. Call me a purist I guess...

Any NYers been in to the post renovation Lombardi's? I've only been once and was really disappointed. Very touristy (New york new york by frank actually played) and I think the pizza got worse. Anyone else?

Any suggestions for pizza in the italian parts of brooklyn? I will check out this di fara's. Any one else?

Thanks. I'll try the Red Devil at 31st St. & McDowell (nearest to me). Now that the serial shooters have been caught, I can enjoy my pizza without getting shot!

Fubegra - I've never been to Atlanta, but I followed the link anyway - farkin' real-estate developers SUCK!

Hell yeah they do... although, in this case I suppose I gotta cut 'em some slack. I think the lease on the one location was just the tipping point for the decision. Hell, maybe even just a hook to hang the decision on.

The owner just died a few months back, and his kids are all pretty successful in their own right, so I think to some degree they just really didn't want the hassle of trying to run the business.

The last order I placed, when the guy delivered it, (this was before they announced it) he let me know that he thought it was coming... and told me that in case it was, he just wanted to take the opportunity to thank me for being such a good customer for so many years. (he was usually the guy who came out with my orders, going back several years... Hope they hooked him up with a good severance.)

They're offering the name and the recipes for $200k.

/any recommendations?

In California, Mulberry's Pizza is one of the best. And Extreme Pizza's Ragin Rooster must have some kind of addictive ingredient.

Are you guys for real? East coast sucks. Florida sucks. West coast sucks. All these places are stuck on stupid with their egos and lack of culinary skills in the pizza department.

I eat pizza at least twice a week, every single week for decades now. I live for pizza.

That said, here is my definitive list:

For frozen pizza
#2 Home Run Inn
#1 Tombstone

and for non-frozen restaurant pizza
#3 Gino's East
#2 Giordano's
#1 Edwardos

All (strangely enough) originate in Chicago.

Oh yeah... I live in Bremerton now so this side of the Sound would be best. There is one pretty good place over here in the hinterlands; Seabeck PIzza. We have it every week (my no cooking day). Any other recommendations would be welcome.

/Yes, caught the Godfather's in PO
//anything else?

No one from the ATL, er, Atlanta, thrown Fellini's out there, yet? Man, whenever I'm there (usually just once/year), I've GOT to eat there. Probably the best slice I've ever had.

2006-08-14 02:11:57 AM

Otherwise vancover

Also, if in Cookeville, the T-Mart by the Hoop at TTU use to have a Godfather's in there, but now it's just "father's" pizza. The pizza rolls are still there, and although not as good as they used to be, they are still pretty damn good. It's like a mini-calzone. Two of those and a diet coke runs about $3.75 after tax, and will fill you up.

Most bar rooms in about an 8-10 mile radius of Brockton, MA have pretty good pizza but the best are

1. Linwood Cafe, Randolph
2. Town Spa, Stoughton
3. Cape Cod Cafe, Brockton
4. Venus Cafe, Whitman
5. Home Cafe, Brockton

Get them with the burnt edges.

Caserta's on Federal Hill, best pizza ever
DP Dough, best calzones ever
Spike's, best hot dog ever

much respect to the Buffalo Zone and the Texas Ranger

This is the final and ultimate truth, due to the fact that I have eaten every pizza, calzone and hot dog from every restaurant that has ever existed. In the world. Yes, all of them.

You'll understand when you realize that the cheese should go ON TOP of the sauce.

I wasn't saying that Florida has the best pizza, I was saying that that was the best pizza place in Florida. Clearly, the best pizza in the U.S. is made in New York.

Detroit Area.

Loui's/Buddy's. Loui's supposedly uses the same recipe, although I suppose that Buddy's has diverged a bit having opened up multiple locations throughout the area. Buddy's is obviously still teh best at its original Conant location. It's simply the best in Detroit, to the point that an area delivery/take-out chain (Jet's) copied their basic style with the inferior delivery quality ingredients and without the actual recipe. I've never really had any pizza like it to compare it to, it's certainly neither thin-crust nor Deep Dish Chicago style. The only problem is eating it slow enough to enjoy, but fast enough so it doesn't go cold! Loui's version is a bit better since they take their time in preparation - give them at least 25-30 minutes to prepare your pizza after ordering. Buddy's was named one of the top5 pizza places in the country by Food Network at one point, which they quite proudly let you know of along with all the other testimonials on the wall.

Pizza Poppalis. Used to just be the one down in Greektown, but there's been some others opened out in the 'burbs. The typical Chicago Deep Dish style.

You guys are all so lucky...from Chicago, now live in London. They don't even understand the concept of pizza in this country. I just want to break down and cry...honestly, I dream of good Chicago style pizza nowadays.
