Here is some footage of people getting shot at the same protest. I saw a lot of footage soon after this incident, bot of the lawyer and other people, and the rubber bullets were flying, mostly at people standing still. At one point a shirtless guy started yelling at the cops (while about 100 feet away from them) and stood there while he got peppered with rubber bullets. It was rough.

Oh good...I though I was the only one. I'm sorry to say I laughed my butt off.

Not a bad idea. I think that if it were policy for police to mingle with the protestors and interact with them as humans then there'd be far less violence on both sides.

In theory not a bad idea, but then you run the risk of the police mixing with politics. Very bad.

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

sylaak: Won't happen. I don't protest anything and I don't hang around people who do bad things to other people/cops/etc and I don't do any of that myself. I also tend to not publicly involve myself with any controversial activities.

Wow, way to give up your right to peacably assemble.

I saw this last night on the news. This woman wasn't even speaking, she was walking.

The cop(s) who shot her are cowards, and I doubt know how to spell 'constitution.'

Oh good, Jake Steede has gone from pretending to be a cop to now openly pretending to be a troll, in order to make people secretly think he's coooool.

Where exactly did I pretend to be a cop? Go away and stop stalking me Barney.

Sylaak seems to sleep fine at night knowing that his capitalist pig lifestyle is lived on the backs of the less fortunate.

He says he's proud of "how hard he has worked" while forgetting that millions work just as hard (if not harder) to provide his clothes and food and car service and everything else he takes for granted.

2006-08-11 04:25:35 PM
the scariest thing is how the pigs make it sound like some sort of game. the whole "we won today" thing, how far will they go to stifle free speech? "accidentally" forgetting to take out the live ammo and replace it with the rubber ammo.

sylaak: The panties on the head "torture" in Abu Graib was pretty amusing. I think we all laughed at the chick who had the cigarette and was pointing.

Sometimes, yes, torture is funny.

Yes, it's hilarious when American rentacop prison guards take a dump on that which our forefathers fought so hard for in WW2. It's f*cking hysterical.

SHHHHHHH!!!!!

You're farking up the argument from the people saying they deserved it or were violent!

I saw your video. The guy did nothing violent except yell. Last time I checked, you can say whatever you want as long as it is not slanderous. Stating an OPINION is not legally considered slander.

NONE of the above warrants getting shot over.

From a transcript of the police "training video"

Major John Brooks is shown in another related videotape used for training (er, entertainment is more like it) purposes talking about the incident with BSO deputies. Here are some quotes from him in that tape straight from the article:
'How about yesterday, huh?'' Brooks says, complimenting the officers for their work during the protests. ``I would go to war with everyone here.''

Brooks continues, ``I went home, I couldn't sleep, I was just so pumped up about how good you guys were . . . Nobody broke ranks. You're the best I've ever been with.''

Sgt. Michael Kallman, a BSO counterterrorism unit officer, addresses the group next. A voice off-camera says, ``What about the lady behind the sign (referring to Ritter)? We have intel on her?''

The officers laugh.

Kallman smiles and says, ``The good news about being able to watch you guys live on TV is that the lady with the red dress, I don't know who got her, but it went right through the sign and hit her smack dab in the middle of the head!''

He raises his forefinger and zooms it toward his forehead.

The cops all laugh.

Another officer asks, off-camera, ``Did I get a piece of her red dress?''

The dress in question:

But then . . . I did something amazing. I traveled the world. Joined the Peace Corps. Went on mission trips. Read lots and lots of books. Educated myself.

Now I realize how wrong my thinking was. Too bad they can't do the same.

You are sitting here saying that protest has not led to any change, have you forgotten about the mass protest of the paris labor laws. I am not on anyones side in that case but the protest did lead to changing the law back to the way it was, and some high officials actually stepped down. SO VANITY SHUT THE FARK UP. spend your time learning something and then come play!

Come on guys, give the cops a break -- they were just blowing off a little steam. A little gallows humour always permeates the workplace. Chill. Take it easy.

2006-08-11 04:40:24 PM
The most important point that needs to be made here is: DON'T MAKE YOUR SIGN OUT OF FOAM CORE! Anybody who shows up to protest the police brutality against protesters, should be smart enough to carry a sign that can double as a shield against rubber bullets. With foam core, you might as well be a mime out there drawing a rectangle in the air with your fingers to hide behind.

2006-08-11 04:41:01 PM
sylaak: Oh, and the whole COINTELPRO restart is just as much a nutjob conspiracy theory as the Apollo hoax theories

Yeah, it's crazy. I mean, back then we had totally different people running the administration. Toward the end of the Vietnam war the Nixon admin was being run by Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Now we have, um, never mind.

2006-08-11 04:42:58 PM
I just watched the video and it appears that there were fires set and people throwing objects at the police. The guy filming took a rubber bullet to the head and just yelped and then got right back up again. They don't seem as lethal as some of the photos indicate. I wonder if there was a warning to disperse at some point. Also, rubber bullets vs. bricks and fire seems more balanced than this was presented originally. However, the fact that Ms. Ritter was hit in the head while still holding her sign indicates that she at least was not a threat. This is a farked up situation all the way around.

2006-08-11 04:43:04 PM
HarryDeanStanton: Here is some footage of people getting shot at the same protest.

It was easier to tell what was going on in the Blair Witch Project than this video. The only things that really stuck out were: the fire started by the protestors, the guy saying he got hit in the head but was fine because it was a rubber bullet. Still don't see any real damning evidence here.

2006-08-11 04:44:32 PM
Seen in the video, a bunch of people were standing around with video cameras. Another guy yells at the cops who were marching towards them in formation "Think about what you are doing! Just think about what you're DOING!"

next thing you hear is about 8-10 shots, and you see the guy that was telling that to the cops on the ground being hit by multiple rubber bullets.

2 seconds later, the guy with the camera get shot in the head, and yells "What the fark! I didn't DO anything!!!"

So we have devolved into a society where cops with less-lethal weaponry can openly shoot citizens that aren't even actively protesting because they simply feel like it.

they guy wasn't protesting...he was taping the protesters...and he was shot for it.

I'm going to have to exit the thread now. Seeing videos like that fills me with rage and contempt....not particuarly useful emotions, but valid nonetheless.

In a case such as this, with the police shooting innocent people at will, I could actually support someone on top of a roof picking off cops with sniper fire.

Rubber bullets are NOT non-lethal. They can, and HAVE killed several people before.

This saddens me greatly to see what kind of "free" country we have become when cops are ordered to shoot innocent people...and they actually OBEY the order.

Okay I'm a hippie but that made me laugh really really hard.

And sklaar or whatever your name is: Look, I don't want to be a dick. I'm being a dick to you. Sorry. But, while there's no need to apologize for our American lifestyles, there's no need to wave it like a flag and act like it's "deserved." We're lucky to be born here. Millions aren't that lucky. We should live with a sense of perspective.

2006-08-11 04:47:17 PM
The moral of the story:

When cops start shooting, shoot back. It's funny when cops bleed.

2006-08-11 04:47:59 PM
Remember back when national guard troops shot live ammo at protesting students. Yeah, they tried to blame the protesters then too. Nixon's statement following the incident was:

"This should remind us all once again that when dissent turns to violence it invites tragedy."

Yes, when dissent turn to violence because the dissenters are violently attacked by government authorities it does turn to tragedy.

Call it what you will, but it's two sides of the same coin, really. I've known people like that. They grow up surrounded with conservative thought so they espouse conservative beliefs. They go to school and surround themselves with liberal friends. Then they espouse liberal beliefs. Their minds are just as malleable as they've always been. The most things change, the more they stay the same.

But keep telling yourself you're just "educated."

st_gulik: t's not us vs. them! Holy Crap! What a FARK up! They're there to protect everyone. Geez!

It is us vs. them, and they don't give a flying fark about protecting anyone.

filth: The civilian review board found no evidence of misconduct; so someone thinks the shooting was justified.

The "civilian review board" is essentially the cops deciding if what they did was OK. It doesn't make shooting people for no reason OK just because your hand picked review board says it was.

vanity: ...various nonsense...

If you really are that stupid, I pity you. If you aren't, then you are trolling, and for some reason you enjoy making yourself look like an idiot.

untrustworthy: Last Spring they sent out a notice to everyone with an alarm on their home that they wouldn't show up when called unless we paid their annual "registration" fee. Farking mobsters.

In Dallas, they still require a registration fee to have an alarm, but they won't respond to alarm calls regardless of whether you've paid the fee. Essentially, if you can't hire your own private security, they don't give a shiat.

The cops in this story were a-holes, like most cops. The only good thing is that at least they shot a lawyer. As a general rule, I'm in favor of shooting lawyers. And the vice president apparently agrees.

I'm conservative. Well, Libertarian to be exact.

Not everyone that is 'conservative' is blind enough to back the government 100% of the time.

This is an example of one of those times when the government overstepped its bounds.

the protesters were not armed with guns. The police were. This is a major reason I do not participate in protests...I would be armed.

Were a cop to shoot ME...I'd return fire. Being as i don't wanna end up dead...I avoid such situations due to my temperament.

Still...a FEW people started trash fires. A FEW people threw rocks after the cops started shooting.

Why then..were the cops shooting people for merely videotaping what was going on.....

And this is also true. However, at the risk of fanning the flames again, I do believe that this woman has a valid complaint against the officers that shot her. In the clip we see--the part where she does get shot, no cuts or jumps--she is not part of a scrum or melee, she is not threatening or attacking the police, and yet she still gets pegged. There could be a horde of protestors waving flaming torches and preparing a shiat catapult just behind the camera, but she's the one who got shot. Deliberately.

Not to belabor the point, but the footage we see shows she was in clear space when she was shot. She was unarmed. She was not near enough the police to be physically threatening. She was not advancing with an air of purpose. And yet someone pegged her just like a boy with a BB gun going after a cat on a fence.

To use possibly inflammatory language, she was acting like an uppity biatch who had it coming to her. Not like a crazed anti-WTO protestor busing up a Starbucks. Just a silly citizen who should have known better, STFU and GBTW. Have a rubber bullet and sit down.

And that's the exact way the officers were joking about it later. And that's the exact way many people on this board are characterizing it.

I was saying that I can't tell what you are talking about. YOu kind of say that the cops went too far, but then you say she's a biatch that got what she deserved (or were you just paraphrasing the cops?)
Since I didn't feel you made a clear statement, I jokingly compared your post to a situation in the film Billy Madison, and responded as if I were his high school principle. But it seems I only created more confusion.

I never claimed to be either a protester..or a peace-lover did I?

I've openly said multiple times that I were to be shot at, I would return fire. don't care if the cops are the ones doing the shooting or not.

I carry a gun 100% of the time. What about that fact makes me a hippy exactly? Then again..I dont go to protests either, because I know the kind of shiat that happens at them.

There are easier angles on grad school admissions... but I guess you don't score as much coffee house poon without a story of how you singlehandedly saved the world while going on a totally cool vacation.

/That's not quite fair, some very small portion of the peace corps people I've met are actually pretty genuine, so you never know.
