If you have a problem and you call the police, you now have two problems. There is absolutely nothing that makes a police officer a more responsible person than any other citizen. They simply receive better protection from the reprocussions of their actions than any but the most wealthy citizen. Police officers are typically held to a lower standard than most citizens, risking suspension or expulsion for offenses that would result in prison time for anyone else. Seems a bit backwards but that appears to be how the American people want it, so that's just how its going to be. And if you don't believe that then you need to reread this thread one more time and note the vast quantity of responses that find it amusing that police are rampantly firing lethal weaponry into large crowds with minimal provocation. At their best, police are a necessary evil of living within a society, and police are rarely ever at their best.

Yes, there was violence on both sides, however, many of the the most meaningful protests were made by unarmed schoolchildren. Too bad the cops shot the hell out of them... and they didn't use rubber bullets.

I live in NY. Cops are not your friend, especially if you're black. I've ridden the subway many times, especially after that unconstitutional and fascist bag-search law. I'm white. I never get searched. My fellow Arab and Black New Yorkers? They get searched, constantly. When a bunch of cops are riding the subways and laughing about beating the crap out of people they arrested, you start to rethink the tools of law enforcement in our country.

My one positive experience with a cop was when I had to call them to save my life from a guy who was trying to kill me and was beating the crap out of his mentally disabled little brother.

But just as I don't think that these cops are representative of law enforcement in general (shouldn't be, anyway), I don't think the resegregationists are representative of blacks in general. I hear nothing about that sort of thing around here, and Houston has a large black population. But if people want to live apart, more power to them. In the sixties, forced segregation was the issue.

Mormons have created a practically segregated state for themselves. There's also a christian movement for a state ruled by biblical law, which is also, I believe, aimed at North Carolina. If groups of people wish to insulate themselves, that's their prerogative. I doubt that the blacks in North Carolina opting to segregate themselves are looking for the return of whites-only drinking fountains; but to be honest, I can't say that for certain, either.
