India. Non-violents protests against British Colonial Government led by Gandhi and crew.

I fully understand that not all cops are bad. The comes from the 'blue shield'. Cops will take up for cops until it is simply WAY too hot for them hold on. The forces of law will bend the law in any to keep one of their own from looking bad. Sure there may only be a few power tripping trouble makers, but the probles is the coverups and protection that are given to these morons. That is what makes all cops look bad.

You don't have to mock me, angryred, I merely pointed that out b/c you used an integration picture. But the resegreggation is no laughing matter. It is underway- I think North Carolina NAACP is doing it.

GavinTheAlmighty: My point is that 99% of the cops out there are good people and that you don't see 99% of them farking off because they're out there doing their jobs.

again, your life experience comes into play when you post that 99% number. You believe that 99% of all police are great guys doing their jobs, I hope your life experience continues to allow for such a rosy view of the world.

Currently I live in a town with zero police, and somehow some way we manage to function and not kill each other off.

Yeah, my own experiences have been about 60/40. Most seem decent, but I have had my share of experiences with cops who think DWB (driving while black) is an offense that justifies pulling a gun on an innocent motorist.

And before the white guys get huffy: I am talking about black and hispanic cops too.

scout1987: It's that thinking that has worsened the situation and is, believe it or not, true police state tactics... people who might want to protest/use their American right protected by the constitution are being scared away from protests... through fear of PHYSICAL HARM.

Are the police supposed to thank people who are throwing rocks, bricks and various other unfriendly objects at them? Is attacking the police an acceptable means of protesting now? Is destroying hard working peoples stores an acceptable form of protest? Unfortunately, some people do and these are the people who do the things that cause the violent exchanges with the police.

If anyone wants to know why this doesn't "add up" it's because this was not a peaceful protest. It was a full scale riot and the "peaceful protestors" were throwing rocks and bottles and rocks at the police. FTAA "protests" are notoriously violent.

filth come play paintball with me. When I shoot one of my buddies and hurt them I feel bad, I apologize, and I shake hands with them. I don't laugh at them. Call me crazy for respecting people. You on the other hand.....I just might giggle a little bit.

And if there were actually enough people who felt the way you did you would bring attention to your cause of protesting the protestors.

/but there aren't, because this is America, and most Americans enjoy the USA just the way it is...

The purpose of a protest is to bring an issue into the spotlight, and force people and the media to re-evaluate it. And it always does that, even if the result is not what you want.

Exactly, these violent protests are casting a negative light on whatever the protestors are supporting. It's alienating the mainstream from their cause.

If these protestors want to win public opinion they need to start acting more like Gandhi and less like Hitler youths terrorizing a community.

Why don't you people like hippies? Sure, some are outspoken and just laughable, but what's wrong with challenging society, living off the grid, being more liberal than society's current mores . . .

Someone give me THREEE good reasons why that's so awful.

again, your life experience comes into play when you post that 99% number.

True. However, can you prove that all cops fark off and abuse power? I'd love to see proof if you've got it.

I hope your life experience continues to allow for such a rosy view of the world.

I hope so too. I'm a cynical man in many ways but I've never had trouble with the police. I've found that by not breaking the law and treating police officers with the same respect I would afford my own family, my experiences with the police have been neutral at worst. Your mileage may vary, and I'm sorry if it does.

I stand by my original point though: if you think all police officers constantly abuse their power and cause trouble instead of actually doing their jobs, you're sorely misinformed.

Cops everywhere suck, period. There are a very few who are in it for the right reasons and do the right thing. The vast majority are jackasses with control issues that aren't mentally fit to wear the badge.

See above.

And no, I wouldn't think shooting an unarmed woman in the back was funny under any circumstances.

GavinTheAlmighty: That must be an American thing. Cops don't have that up here

Be assured, they have some unspoken way of identifying "them" from "you." It doesn't have to be all that obvious, either. A few cops I know don't have those tags on their cars, but dhey do have front vanity tags that are mostly black and blue. (in GA, you only have to have a tag on the rear of the vehicle.) And they also have the same thing, in a small but still clearly visible sticker they place on their rear window or bumper.

so, you've switched from false statements to strawman arguments. that's good, it is a better debate tactic for you, it doesn't require you to prove anything or make sense.

filth: Second, assuming with me for the moment (and if you're not willing to do that, please just enjoy a nice cup of STFU) that the use of rubber bullets was justified in this situation (and not the moral equivalent of hosing negroes, NYMoogle, you jackass), wouldn't it be OK to have a little laugh about it later back at the station house? Even if it's not totally professional, wouldn't you still chuckle?

It's not moral equivalence. It's a similar depravity that is prevalent in bullies. Police know they have overwhelming force at their disposal. They know they have a big blue wall to protect them. They revel in their invulnerability. The actions of those officers are indicative of sociopathic personalities. When you laugh at one person harming another one, you're an asshole, and unfit to be a police officer. It's the guys laughing at this woman who were laughing about civil rights protesters being hosed. Trust me. Cut from the same cloth.

Take the space out. I don't know how to make it pop.

Reports from witnesses said the girl was actually trying to get behind a police line for protection when she was shot in the eye and the pellet entered her brain, killing her.

The police in both cases were firing indiscriminately at unarmed citizens who weren't posing a threat to the police.

Here is the solution. Better firearms training for cops.

Hmm, I've never noticed this, my best friend's dad is a cop and we've examined that car top to bottom looking for anything different. Up here in Canada though, things could be different up here. Of course, now I'll be looking for ANY irregularity.

This being Florida and all, I wonder if those cops realize that by shooting rubber bullets at protestors without justification they are making themselves legal targets for real bullets under Florida's "stand your ground laws". I wonder how long it will take for some pissed off anarchist to take them up on it?

Far too many cops are bullies/sadists who will think nothing of cracking heads when they have body armor and clubs; but will go disability for two months if one of the innocent people they are pounding lands a halfway decent punch.

You want to put a stop to this kind of crap?

Make every Cop wear a helmet cam. And: Any cop whose sworn statement is contradicted by videotape gets fired automatically, no suspension, no paid vacation, no pension. And then prosecute them for perjury.

we'd lose 50% of our cops overnight, but the half that was left would be the honest ones

All I know for sure about this story is...it should've had a Flordia tag.

Police corruption and brutality are all too common. Protests are damn well important and protected by the constimitution. But this story has too many holes in it as it stands now for any objective person to take sides. So naturally, this thread is turning into a flame war, based on which way your knee jerks.

Nothing about that changes the rules of engagement that the police riot squad are bound by, nor the minimum safe distance of their weapons.

Riot weapons are not meant to be fired at point blank range. If they are fired at too close a range, they can be fatal. I'm sure as a Florida cop you must know that - it certainly appears like that's what you're pretending to be.

And regardless of the level of violence "notoriously" found at their protests, it does not entitle the cops to step up their level of aggression until ordered to do so. If they were ordered to do so, their CO is wrong. If they did it without orders, they're wrong.

The civilian review found nothing wrong, which is hardly surprising and is basically a joke in itself. But these cops... ***these cops*** - not your buddies on "Cops", which you probably TiVo - fukked this situation up.

Basically, dude, STFU.

All you morans throwing the hippie word around need to RTFA again, cause you missed something: She was wearing a suit and just got off of work.

To the right: as soon as you stop telling yourself that all protesters are hippies, you'll realize what's going on... the beginnings of fascism and totalitarianism. Characterizing these people as "deserving" of rubber bullets if all they did is protest just furthers the descent away from freedom and toward totalitarianism.

I want to see videos of the bricks being hurled because I seriously doubt the red dress woman threw any.

Anyone saying 'few bad apples' is neglecting the fact that apples don't have the power to blow the whistle on each other. The majority of police see corruption every day, in one form or another. Their complacency makes them accomplices.
You don't change the devil, the devil changes the abyss that stares back at you and all that.
Cops -across the board- stand up for each other, as opposed to standing up for the victims of police brutality.

2006-08-11 02:06:37 PM
She then turns toward the officers and asks, "Did you shoot me? A lady in a suit? Who has been walking peaceably in front of you for half an hour and you shot me when my back was turned?"

again, from personal experience. you can have 9,999 ghandis in a crowd and one brownshirt. it still ends the same, with the crowd getting gassed. the protesting community has been trying to deal with this problem forever.

for people to go through the trouble of assembling, they have to be pretty disenchanted. the conduct of police at these events is to say the very least antagonizing. if one person gets goaded into an altercation than the whole message is lost and the only thing we did was to be willing punching bags for a bunch of sadist assholes.

All you people who think that the general state of protests in North America are about people blocking entranceways, roads, sitting on cars and generally causing public mischief need to stop watching Fox News and seriously GO to some protests if you want to intelligently speak out against them.

This is the way that protests are VERY glibly portrayed in the media. The actual number of protests like this are maybe less than a quarter. That's still a lot... but that's also a lot that are peacful and productive.

She had the misfortune of hanging around the people who were throwing bricks at cops. If you hang around people throwing bicks at cops, bad things are likely to happen to you, even if you didn't throw the bricks.
