Why is a machine for killing people considered cool?

Zeppo Nightshade: It's kinda like giving a teenager a 500 hp Porsche; American's get a hard on about their military hardware.

You sure could kill a lot of children with that thing. Puppies and kittens too. And it's all at taxpayer expense! Very cool, indeed. Kill, kill, kill. Destroy. Demolish. Repeat.

2006-08-09 08:43:51 AM
Yes, killing. Still, these are amazingly-constructed machines and they're intensely cool for the engineering that's gone into them.

2006-08-09 08:45:55 AM
Indeed, killing aside they are impressive pieces of technology, i'd love to have a ride in one.

AH-64A/D Apache Attack Helicopters don't kill people. People kill people.

It's for killing bad people. That's why it's cool.

Exactly.

Personally, I love watching military helicopters just for the amazing mobility.

Is it just my computer or was the audio (Thunderstruck is a great song) more than a little messed up there? I kept hearing tempo changes that I know AC/DC didn't intend or record.

2006-08-09 10:02:43 AM
You hybrid-driving, tofu-eating, sandal-wearing, moonbat pinkos just don't get it.

1: Without these killing machines you'd be speaking either German or Russian today - or reading Arabic tomorrow.

2: The money that goes into them does not evaporate. It goes into the bank account of people who make, design and assemble them. They and their families then eat at McDonalds so that you can earn you 7.25.

3: A buddy of mine's dad was a Sikorsky engineer. He won't fly in a a helicopter. As he said, "too damned many moving parts."

Video stolen from GrouchyMedia.com

I think the video is actually from Military.com so both this site and GrouchyMedia.com stole it :)

Does everything on the internet need its own soundtrack now?

I realize it's hard to imagine that anyone might be listening to their own music these days, since we clearly don't have innovations like MP3 software, iPods, BitTorrent, etc.

2006-08-09 10:25:19 AM
That video was crap. Stock footage doesn't really do much for me, particularly when the explosions are obviously not caused by the helicopters in question. (One of the APCs was obviously exploded by a TOW missile. Apaches use laser-guided Hellfires.)

2006-08-09 10:29:15 AM
Apaches can also have dumb fire Folding-Fin Aerial Rockets on them in addition to the Hellfires.

2006-08-09 10:31:26 AM
Nice video, nice AC/DC backing track.

As a battlefield weapon tho, helicopters are obsolete - too slow and too vulnerable to RPG and shrapnel, even small arms fire. There have been dozens lost in the last few years.

They are, however, brilliant in a civilian role and for logistics.

Can't RPG an Apache when its hovering 3 miles away from you behind a hill with its scanners and computer automatically finding and prioritising 256 targets for you :)

2006-08-09 10:44:22 AM
Yeh, you can if you're sitting underneath it in a rubble house tho. That's the problem. Don't matter how many targets its prioritising if its missed a single person with a weapon from WW2, which is essentially what an RPG is.

Made me want to play Battlefield 2 now.

2006-08-09 11:41:03 AM
Well the video didn't do much for me but that was because it was all stock footage that any aviation enthusiast has seen over and over. And all you 'Killing machines' people need to get a farking grip. Really. And whoever it was that said 'Helicopters are obsolete' needs to stop talking out of his ass. Yes, they can get shot down, but relative to the number of sorties they fly and the dangerous situations they end up in, a modern attack helicopter is a battlefield terror. By your logic, trucks are obsolete because hundreds of HMMWVs have been destroyed by IEDs.

Anyhow, this is the coolest helicopter video you will see today

xnecron: Apaches use laser-guided Hellfires.

?

Apaches can use TOWs as well, I thought. I know Cobras can.

2006-08-09 12:31:57 PM
Early Apaches offered to the Marine Corps were fitted with TOWs, but tmk they were never deployed into combat with them. They use the Hellfires. As neddage mentioned above, they can use dumb-fired Folding Fin Aerial Rockets, but the video footage I saw in the link definitely appeared like a TOW to me.

Helicopters are obsolete on a battlefield. You'll note the IDF is using F15s in Lebanon. Not a helicopter in sight.

The BBC broadcast footage of attack choppers being used by the IDF in Lebanon.

That'd be an interesting fact that would back up your point if it had any shred of truth to it.

Apache gunships patrolling Lebanese airspace

Dang. That's what I get for laziness. I couldn't be bothered actually checking. Now I've been rumbled.

I could get a job with Fox.

Anyway, a whole bagfull have been shot down in Afghanistan and Iraq.

NO way dude.. Heli's dominate the actual battlefield.. who do you think the eyes and ears are? a f16 can't hover a mile away from a target and pound it repeatedly.. they cany really perform stealth strikes like an apache can.. didnt you check out that scout chopper lurking behind the hillside with its optics sticking up?

oh yeah all you hippies that dont think this is cool
STFU and GBTG (get back to granola)

What do you need helicopter for when you have satellites that can read the name off a golf ball?

You don't.

You target with satellites and you send in the laser guided bombs on an F16.

A helicopter does 300 mph max. Modern missiles are more like 3000 plus - a helicopter wouldn't have a chance on a proper battlefield.

Anything that can be shot down with small arms fire is obsolete on a proper battlefield.

2006-08-09 04:17:55 PM
Plus - you'd be better off with an A-10 Warthog in any case if it was the pilots targetting ad-hoc.

Almost indestructable.

That is a cool video, Kaeishiwaza. I second the call to play Battlefield 2.

Toddism

Please explain to me in which war exactly that helicopters were key in repelling the Germans or the Russians, or for that matter Arabic speaking people?

I would take being a hybrid-driving (hurray!), tofu-eating (yum healthy), sandal-wearing (love the breeze on my toes, less athelete's foot too), moonbat pinkos (might as well just say poo poo head if you want to just throw names around)vs being a bombastic pinhead, nyah!

Helicopters are just a tool, like any tool, they have a purpose.

As a matter of fact spear and sword have far more to do with you not speaking German, Russian, and Arabic than any piece of modern military technology.

Did that inspire "Team America?"

2006-08-09 09:10:29 PM
Some good warnography : )

I did think of Team America too when I saw it.

2006-08-09 11:50:21 PM
Sigh...

Certainly you do not suggest that I suggested that helicopters kept us from speaking german. I simply meant war and war machines.

Pilot is stupid -- just sit in one spot while car tears ass around the track, you'll get lock in no time.

[I know, I know, whole thing is scripted]
