Woot! High Score!

/wishes they had that around here

They might want to do the same thing for dental hygeine enforcement.

/Obligatory

Speeding doesn't kill. Bad drivers kill.

Formula 1 drivers have better per mile accident rates than the average SUV driving soccer mom.

They're those metal thingies on the front and back of your car...

Gosh, I am feeling so POSITIVE and OPTIMISTIC today - I'm guessing that if the device is almost twice as effective as mailing them a ticket that they will drop the ticket/fine/points part and just use the displays to help curb excessive speeding.

/or not

"Watch. I can get 10 MPH faster next week!"

I would love that.

Darth Jackass: Formula 1 drivers have better per mile accident rates than the average SUV driving soccer mom.

F1 drivers are professional, all going the same direction at mostly the same speed. And on a lot of tracks, pretty much single file.
Let's have races where they go both directions, with only a stripe of paint between. Toss in a couple of random buses, people walking across the track, and a couple of battling kids in the back seat. Oh, and let's run two or three classes of cars at the same time. Top speeds of 130, 160, and 200.

Then lets see what happens to that per mile rate.

/widely varying speeds DO kill

"The device, called the M42, was previously tested near Birmingham."
Eh?

Wow... they really are getting tough on speeding.

They already have a way to display dental shame in public: it's called "teeth".

I GOT THE HIGH SCORE!

/that is all.

2006-08-06 12:34:55 PM
I've joined the M42 from the M40 and gone from the best free flowing road I've ever driven at quite safe speeds of over 100 leptons to one of the worst with all the traffic bunched up and having so many close calls it was beyond belief. The M40 has no speed cameras, The M42 has gantry cameras every half mile or less. That cant be a coincidence

Although the devices can display the speed, they plan to disable this feature as obviously it would create a new class of driving idiot trying to get a high score.

I'm all for this move away from stupid revenue cameras as they clearly do little to actually reduce speed and are obviously placed in areas where they will make money for the authorities.

The other issue is being told to slow down due to 'workers in road' only to see .. nobody at all. I have no problem slowing down for the guys doing their job by the road but it gets very very annoying being forced to slow down to a stupidly slow speed like 40mph at 4am on an empty motorway with no workers.

If they do use these cameras and they do, as they claim they will, actually turn them off when they are not needed, then this is going to be much better than getting fined, however this whole thing is clearly a thinly disguised effort to get cameras that are tracking our journeys onto the roads which is something the UK government is rolling out. (It's already in some towns like Leeds).

Link all this to the proposed yet-another-IT-disaster-in-the-making ID cards, and hello more big brother powers.

Speaking of speed cameras, here in Minnesota I've seen a couple speed limit signs that are also affixed with a radar unit and will display your speed below in BIG YELLOW NUMBERS.

They're only 2 digits, so I've wondered what happens when you exceed 99 mph.

/hasn't tested it yet

Here in the states, cameras are for generating revenue for government, not for making things safer. At least, that's how it works in my city. They recently discovered that the red light cameras aren't snagging enough violators even to break even, so the city is reducing the yellow light time at those intersections. Claiming, of course, that it's for safety reasons. Scum-sucking dirtbags.

There's one easy way to avoid the so-called "shame" and still speed: Don't memorize your license plate number.

2006-08-06 01:37:44 PM
I'd much rather wiz buy a camera than a state trouper. I dont have to get pulled over, get out of the car and watch them sniff around in hopes of a huge drug bust.

Plus, I know where the sign is.

Enjoyed a good chuckle in scotland this year. The locals coming home from work drive like maniacs between camera signs. This woman in a BMW flew by us like we were standing still. A few miles ahead she was in the ditch.

I needed a 'Nelson" car horn so bad

and just when are we going to get a cable channel dedicated to high-speed chases? that's unwashed entertainment!

2006-08-06 02:10:26 PM
Long access road at work.

Occassionally they post a radar with a screen to show you your speed.

Then they talk about it in safety meetings.

Might or might not have been high # more than once.

Reality trumps your "obviously." These things have been in place in various places in the US, and few if any ever try to run up a high score. Everybody slows down when those things are around.

How many points do I need to get a free game?

2006-08-06 02:55:23 PM
I drive the M42 all the time. It sucks, end of story. Short but sucky. Speed cameras everywhere for about 8 miles, usually jammed solid and barely moving. When it is free, you'd better be doing at least 80 if you want to avoid getting run over.

A far better solution would be to level the town of Birmingham next to the M42 and turn that into a billion lane motorway. Sure, it's impractical and expensive, but if the Germans couldn't be bothered to finish the job they started 60+ years ago and level the place, it's up to us to do the right thing.

Hey, hey, HEY! Don't you go knocking my new team.

Anyway, the only way you'll get a 'high-score' driver is if you display the speed. This is probably why the display they put up around here every other week that shows ONLY the speed never does anything. Just show the license plate and it serves the purpose much better. You can't have people going for a high score if there is no high score.

Those aren't for law enforcement. Those are used to determine the speed at which most people drive, so they know where to set the speed limit for the road. (I *speed up* when I see one of those things.)

No they arem't. They are so people can see their speed and slow down. The units you are talking about are portable and have no visible display.

I RATHER LIKE THOSE. What I find particularly entertaining is when I approach one at the speed limit-say 45 MPH and the thing is displaying 50 ... 52 ... 55 ... 53 ... 49 ... 51 as everyone else on the road flagrantly ignores it.

They're only 2 digits, so I've wondered what happens when you exceed 99 mph

Text message? Hmmm. SD? Nah. XP? Oh Ghod, no! WTF? OMG? Not enough characters. FU? Yeah. That's it. FU

No. If it did that they'd have to allow rude vanity plates. Never happen.

No they arem't.

If they were for law enforcement, then there would be a cop standing by to hand out speeding tickets. Either that or there would be a camera to snap a photo of your license plate. But neither of those things ever happen.

They are so people can see their speed and slow down.

Reference, please.

In various places outside the city, we have these signs on lampposts that tell you what speed you're doing, and if it's five miles over the limit they just say "SLOW DOWN".

They do seem to slow people down to some extent. I see people dropping below the trigger point all the time.

Not sure if this makes the roads any safer though.

I do not know what my plate #s are either. ANyway, I doubt this would work here. Consider that these people driving like asshats already know they are doing so and just flip you off if you beep at them anyway. Maybe for the rare driver that doesn't know she is an asshat this might work but basically some little Mitsubishi p.o.c. with a fin on it doesn't give a rat's arse.

I actually think it is a little funny....

My mom was telling me about her friend Margret, and something funny she did to her husband a long time ago: Dino would drink every Tuesday night and become a big fat douchebag, yelling at the family and whatnot. Often he would pass out in the chair, and on one of thse occasions Margret decided to use up the last couple of shots on her camera and take some photos of Dino passed out. After being diagnosed with Diabetes and being told by his doctor that if he had another sip of alcohol it would be death, he quit drinking. That year Margret made him a Valentine's day card that said:

Violets are Blue,
Roses are Red,
Keep up your drinking
and Soon you'll be dead!

I just thought it was funny
