The article says:

Francisco Jacquez, the chief deputy warden at Pelican Bay State Prison, in Crescent City, Calif., said the violation could extend Johnson's sentence or restrict his privileges.

Then:

Johnson, who is 46, is serving three life sentences.... He has been in solitary confinement in a small concrete cell for almost two decades.

Oooo, what are you gonna do to him? Give him a 4th life sentence? BRING IT ON, biatch!

/Stupid, stupid warden
//Hopes he does bring a legal challenge
///He's not engaged in unauthorized business dealings because he's not engaged in business dealings

If it's against the rules to run a business from your cell, the it's against the rules. Period. The objection was not to making the art, or even showing it, but rather to selling the art. I guess he shouldn't have broken the law, gee whiz.

get real: evaned, you do know a life sentence is not really life don't you?

Yeah, I know. (At least, it often is.) In fact, the article even says 9 to life and 15 to life.

j0ndas: The objection was not to making the art, or even showing it, but rather to selling the art.

Um, he wasn't selling it. He DONATED it to an art gallery which then sold it.

He donated it retard. That means he gave it to someone for free and the person he gave it to decided to auction it off. The proceeds go to helping children of prisoners. That doesn't matter though, because he donated it first. This warden guy is a smacktard, and I hope he loses his job.

"In 1989, he was convicted of slashing the throat of one guard and assaulting another. Those crimes resulted in two additional sentences of nine years to life."

Yeah, I really can't imagine why the prison management would be so hard on this guy....

"fark him, he killed someone and his art doesn't mean shiat even if he DONATED it....if someone kills your family member then makes 'art from candy' does that really make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?"

Considering he donated all proceeds to children of prisoners? Yes that would make me feel good. What would you rather he do with his time?

ElBarto79 fark him self to death?

2006-08-04 08:42:17 PM
Sounds constructive, and I'm sure the kids that are benefitting from his donation wouldn't mind if he did that either.

2006-08-04 08:52:21 PM
donated the paintings to the Pelican Bay Prison Project, a charity that says it will honor Johnson's wish that it use the proceeds from the show to help the children

(sarcasm ahead)
He helped children?! What an asshole. No wonder the prison officials are pissed.

Should we always judge someone by the worst mistakes they ever made? What if someone also does a great deal of good in their life? How would you like to be judged by the worst thing you've ever done - for the rest of your life. Most likely, not everyone knows what you've done, but what if they did?

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Why judge someone on one foul act without knowing either the situation or their good deeds? What's the real reason? So you can feel superior?

This man worked in a profession that

1) should be legal. Drug prohibition benefits no one except law enforcement.

2) has no legal option with which to settle disputes. Working in the business of drug dealing requires - by it's very nature - the use of violence. If you don't like that, then end prohibition. But obviously you do, since keeping it illegal can force people into situations where they commit crimes and then you can feel superior - all the better if they're another race.

/end rant

i am totally against the idea of prisoners making a profit from their crime or time. however, this guy was doing neither. heck, it sounds like he wasn't even using my tax money to buy paint or brushes, just making it up as he went.

leave him alone, let him paint.

It would probably make me feel better than if Richard Allen Davis called me a child molester and a fool.

(omg, I can do HTML, unlike 99% of Fark posters)

Oh wait, I guess all criminals are the same and their lives are a complete waste and we can never let them try to do anything good for society.

"won't someone PLEASE think of the children?"

I remember this guy now. They did a piece on him in the "Supermax" series on the discovery channel. He is one scary piece of work. Guards they interviewed from the time of his last crimes (committed in prison) just couldn't say enough about his;
amazing athleticism (maintained by constant exercise)
deep ties to the prison gang system
batshiat crazy violent streak

The story they told of him slashing that guards throat was chilling. He had apparently planned it thouroughly with the assistance of some other prisoners... Right down to having a weapon passed to him through the bars while charging the guard he had been threatening for some time and had finally targeted.
They had a special term for his current state of incarceration, a little more stern than "Solitary Confinement". They called it "No human contact". He not only is locked up all the time, and has not touched another human in 17 years, he is also under 24hour video surveilance with the lights on in his cell continuously.
So now he's painting with M&Ms, great, just so they keep him in that cell...

Most prison problems could be solved by having the prisoners grow and smoke strong marijuana.

Then, six months before release, send them to a "health prison" where there would be no smoking, and lots of healthy food. That is where you concentrate your rehabilitation, where everyone is a short-timer.

2006-08-04 09:54:03 PM
Serving three life sentences? I guess this guy has trouble coloring between the lines.

I don't think anyone appreciates the gravity of this situation.
HE'S IN SOLITARY,PEOPLE....like a seething kettle about to ERUPT!!
If we let him have M&Ms....WHERE WILL IT END?????
I think you people need to wake up, smell the coffee, and re-examine this...before it's too late!!

/you can't paint with Skittles....that's y they r teh suxors

Jesus farking Christ, let the guy do something productive with his life. At least he can contribute to society in some small way with this and it's not like he's even making money. If the law is against unauthorized business dealings, how about not being a douchebag and just authorizing them?

2006-08-05 12:53:34 AM
And would someone PLEASE kill the idea that makes people use apostrpheses to pluralize (as in M&M's)?

I can't take this much longer.

Yeah, I feel really sad that this guy was forced to commit crimes because of his illegal "profession." Maybe he shouldn't have been selling drugs in the first place?

And yes, thank you for pointing out that anyone who opposes you're view is a racist.
