When will someone point out to the dumbasses that they are making fun of christians on the Simpsons?

2006-08-04 10:37:30 AM
I'm not sure about that. My favorite (as in thought-provoking) Simpsons episodes are:

1) Bart sells his soul for $5
2) Lisa and the skeleton "angel"

/Favorite (funny) ep - Sideshow Bob at the Airshow. Yeah, yeah, I'm an AF brat, sue me...

That might be hard since a lot of them seem to lack cognitive functionality.

I don't know. While they make fun of everyone, they treat Ned pretty nice on that show, especially on that original Christmas episode.

/Is it making fun of Christians to suggest some of them speak in tongues or hope for the end of the world?

Subby and author are geniuses. Go figure that PROTESTANT christians associate Ned Flanders, a PROTESTANT character, more with PROTESTANT christianity than the CATHOLIC pope and the CATHOLIC mother theresa. Especially given that PROTESTANT christians are thus named for their PROTEST of the CATHOLIC church.

I would like to see that. Is that anything like Dread Zeppelin?

indeed. To paraphrase some of our fellow farkers:

When will someone point out to the dumbasses that they are making fun of christians on the Simpsons? Catholic != Protestant, yet both are Christians?

While they definately poke fun at Ned and in Christianity in general, for the most part The Simpsons has a pretty theistic angle on it with representation of a benevolant god entity.

So I'd say they more make fun of the Dogma surrounding christianity than the beleif itself.

They make fun of everyone on that show (key to the success - try not to piss off one group too much). Ned Flanders is sometimes used as "straight man" to Homer.

Of course, they did another informal poll - who would you rather have as your neighbor? Ned Flanders or Homer Simpson? Ned won hands down.

Your point would be valid if the headline was "Ned Flanders was more associated with Protestantism than John Paul II or Mother Teresa".

But it didn't.

So it not.

Jenkins said Flanders sets a good example for Christians. "He's a very ardent believer...and at the same time he's very humble," he said. "Although he's got very strong beliefs, he's not thrusting them down anyone's throat and he's not being unpleasant about it.

I guess they never saw the one where he tries to baptize Bart, Lisa and Maggie when they're under his foster care. I love that one.

Um, I think this was a rather specific survey, and as tansa said?

Plus, most surveys are worded in specific ways to get specific answers. I got a call last week asking about sex and violence on TV, and how many women are concerned it is negative for children. It finished with "do you agree?" And I said "NO, I don't. People should be responsible for their own kids, and I like watching sex and violence, as an adult." The woman hung up, because my answer didn't support the survey's goal. As such, I will never trust the results of a survey again.

Well the character of Ned Flanders can be considdered an amalgamation of all christian faiths. Not just protestant, although that is his, and the simpsons, official religion. Hell, Ned even says once that he stays kosher "just in case."

I happen to agree with the headline, and here's why:

*Ned Flanders' entire character is 'really devout Christian'. Kinda hard NOT to associate him with Christianity.
*John Paul II and Mother Teresa, meanwhile, 'Christian' is not the first thing that comes to mind. Heck, if the submitter didn't tell me now, I wouldn't have known nor cared what Teresa's religion was. I simply view them more as good human beings regardless of what their religion may be.

Yes Christianity is mocked on that show at times, but it isn't mean spirited like some shows. The hypocracy of American Christianity is rightly exposed, but there is a solid Judeo-Christian ethic that runs through the themes.

I am a protestant and I've never been offended by how they have protrayed Christians, we need a slap in the face sometimes when we act stupidly.

I believe in that episode they are deliberately doing that to drive the person away. I would argue that the Flanders do not push thier beliefs on others.

Your point would be valid if the headline was "Ned Flanders was more associated with Protestantism than John Paul II or Mother Teresa".

You missed his point. He's suggesting that since the survey was done in Christianity Today, a Protestant publication, its readers are going to be predominately protestants and their notions of Christianity are going to be shaped by that. It's not the question that's biased in this case - it's the sampling.

The Ned character is used to poke fun at lots of positions and practises of various churches, but the writers have always shown a certain respect for his basic "nice guy" motives.

To be honest, it's kind of the way I feel about the religion. Behind all the thought-control assholes with their intolerance and damnation, there are lots of nice Christians who really try to follow what they believe is Jesus' teachings when it comes to being humble, compassionate to sinners and sufferers, and non-judgemental in general. It's an admirable thing.

You just don't notice them so much, since they're purposely trying to be meek about it.
