The American Left is enamored with Joseph Stalin. The liberals of this country want good, honest, hard working citizens to empathize with the plight of "'ol Honest Joe", as they like to call him. Well, frankly, we at NRO just can't get behind this. First, the left wants to eat our babies, then they want to get our grandmothers high on the loco weed, and now this. When can we just line up the liberals against a wall and start shooting? I say we schedule them for this coming Tuesday around 2-ish... it'll make for a good after-lunch event. We'll serve muskmelon.
2006-08-04 09:36:19 AM
I'm an "American Left" and I have never been enamored of dictators who completely crush their citizens and wreak havoc on their economy to the point where it's virtually non-existant.
2006-08-04 09:36:57 AM
I'm sure he has his supporters among the Left, but Hitler has his supporters among the extreme right as well. I love how Republicans characterize perhaps 1% of American liberals as "the left."
2006-08-04 09:37:10 AM
As an American liberal, I think he's a cock.
2006-08-04 09:37:17 AM
NRO link. Move along, nothing (truthful) to see here.

Pooter: The American Left is enamored with Joseph Stalin

Submitter had the grammar right, one is enamored "of", not with.

//end grammar nazi, non sequitur dickweed.
2006-08-04 09:38:36 AM
The American Left is enamoured of Adolph Hitler and Pol Pot- it's because they hate you and everything you stand for!
2006-08-04 09:40:31 AM
flucto: Submitter had the grammar right, one is enamored "of", not with.

From Merriam-Webster:

"2 : to cause to feel a strong or excessive interest or fascination -- usually used in the passive with of or with"

If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong - I wouldn't shed a tear if this thread were derailed into a grammar war.

I'm enamored of camel enamel
2006-08-04 09:41:34 AM
I have to say, I love these threads. They go like this :

Conservatives: Liberals are commies, we're really cool. We're bastions of righteousness. We are the only thing keeping Bill Maher from serving baby flesh at dinner.

Liberals: Conservatives are teh suck. Bush is maximum suckage. Religion is the worst thing evar!!!

Rational human being with finctioning central nevous systems: What the hell is wrong with you two?
2006-08-04 09:41:52 AM
They can't be that enamored. I don't recall tons of young idiots wearing red and black Fidel Castro t-shirts.
2006-08-04 09:42:56 AM
Dictator who crushes dissent, tortures prisoners and provides free health care, lowers the infant mortality rate to almost nothing and raises the literacy rate to nearly 100

is greater than

Dictator who crushes dissent, tortures prisoners and starts needless wars.

Castro defeats Bush in the quarterfinals, takes on Chavez in the semis in the chase for the Dictator Cup.

In other news, Jack Nicholson, Rep. Charlie Rangels and the trade unions represent the American leftist population.

All I read was, "blah blah blah, something something something.."
2006-08-04 09:44:12 AM
Having spent part of my formative years living in Miami, the last person I'm enamored is Fidel Castro.
2006-08-04 09:44:47 AM
P.S. I'm a "liberal"
2006-08-04 09:46:05 AM
Ok which one of you weak willed liberals let these conservative bastards in on our deepest darkest secret? We talked about this on the secret microwave teleconference last night that all liberals participate in and we stressed keeping our deep abiding (dare I say erotic) love for left wing dictators a secret. Whomever let this cat out of the bag will be shot, or at the very least get a very strongly worded let of condemnation from Jesse Jackson.
2006-08-04 09:47:23 AM
Clearly the NRO has their finger on the pulse of American liberalism.
2006-08-04 09:51:08 AM
I've been crying all week. I'm terribly heartbroken that he's fallen ill. I've offered him my colon (in more than one way), but he hasn't responded.
2006-08-04 09:53:05 AM
I would like to thank National Review for once again letting me know what I stand for. I thought that I stood for personal liberty and freedom as a Democrat, but obviously I was wrong. Thank you NRO. You're the best.

I hope that big business "teh porr are teh lazie" Kool-Aid is served over ice today. It is really hot outside.
2006-08-04 09:54:27 AM
NRO needs another cockpunch.
2006-08-04 10:12:24 AM
My Poli-Sci advisor in college was enamored with Castro, but he was an admitted Marxist. That's a bit to the left of most liberals.

Fidel is so, how shall I say, last spring.

What really gets this pinko's meat flap engorged is YOU yes YOU Rich Lowry. Something about the James Spaderesque combover says, yeah, I can rock the blazer, what the fark are you doing in my parents rec room? The way you can tell me what I think before I even think it, in straight flat-out take no prisoners language that says, "calm down hippie, daddy's home."

Dear god I want to be your Molly Ringwald.

Fine fine fine -- if the left love Castro, then the right loves Hitler, right?

Cause sweeping generalizations using a vague brand that can be manipulated at will are EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED IN YOUR POLITICAL PROCESS RIGHT NOW, AREN'T THEY?

Looking like Karl Rove is guest admin once again.

Hoo, boy. You must be new here. That just sums up most political threads that go green.

2006-08-04 10:39:56 AM
It's more 'few are the same as the whole' sprinkled with a healthy dose of 'outright bullshiat'.
2006-08-04 10:41:37 AM
Actually it was the Jew hating conservatives in American big business who supported Hitler the most.
2006-08-04 10:42:48 AM
Part of the American Left is in love with the idea of American weakness

That's possibly the stupidest statement I've ever seen on NRO. And there's been a lot of them.
2006-08-04 10:46:20 AM
Don't take the bait... this is just a bunch of useless drivel.
2006-08-04 10:47:39 AM
I'd say the reason he got there is understandable. Batista himself was a dictator and a major-league asshat. But it's time Cubans had the chance to elect asshats themselves, rather than have asshattery thrust upon them.
2006-08-04 10:49:27 AM
Frankly, as an American Leftist, I'm way too busy eating babies to be enamored of anyone.
2006-08-04 10:51:21 AM
Nabb1: Hoo, boy. You must be new here. That just sums up most political threads that go green.

Nah dude, not really, it's just that when the pendulum lived in the middle, it was funny, because these nutball things just brought the crazies out, and that was fun.

These are the wackjob far enders anymore -- they're the mainstream, and it's kinda creepy dude, and it's just not funny anymore.
2006-08-04 11:06:29 AM
Pooter: I wouldn't shed a tear if this thread were derailed into a grammar war.

Okay. usually used in the passive voice or as a participial adjective, in either case followed by of: He became enamored of at least one of his teachers every year. Sometimes it is followed by with, as in I've never been enamored with her acting, and it can occasionally be heard or seen with by, as in I'm not enamored by the jazz he likes to play, but many consider that combination Nonstandard or Casual at best: you would do well to avoid it.

And the Republicans are enamoured with Mao Tse-Tung.....

Gotta love the Walmart Republicans bashing that "commie" Castro while supporting THE LARGEST COMMUNIST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!!!

Pot meet kettle.......

Be American, Buy American....
Be Communist, Buy Chinese......

Oh, and it's not the beard, it's the cigars. We want some.
2006-08-04 11:11:45 AM
We don't like dictators, you're thinking of the neocons.
2006-08-04 11:17:59 AM
do comparisons with Stalin count as Godwins?
2006-08-04 11:23:20 AM
I'd pay a huge fee if fark put godwin in their filter. A bigger fee if they hired a strike team to find the person and shoot him from a cannon.

Funny, I think all the US Presidents with big beards and mustaches have been Republicans (Benny "el tigre" Harrison (R) above looks a lot like Fidel). Grover Cleveland's (D) mustache was more like John Waters.

Apart from idealists who think Che was some sort of folk hero, most liberals don't really care about Castro. Only conservatives who haven't thawed out from Cold War rhetoric and Cuban National wackos still have a hard-on for this guy.

If the US had normalized trade relations with Cuba, Castro's grip on the population would have faded years ago. Has National Review ever advocated this policy? If not, why do they still support measures that further his regieme?
2006-08-04 11:38:44 AM
Isn't there a [strawman] tag?
2006-08-04 11:46:41 AM
Man, Brap, that was awesome.

Let's talk about the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party.
Who did you support in the Greensboro Massacre?
2006-08-04 11:56:06 AM
Though the precise time of its expiration has long since fled into the vault of history, let us observe a moment of silence for the passing of NRO. Once a champion of conservatism, its corpse is now nothing more than an echo chamber filled with screeched lies and hardened hate ricocheting of the decaying walls of its own desperate partisanship.

Ultimately, what probably attracts leftists to Castro rightwingers to BushCo is sheer power. He represents what the late writer John François-Revel called "the totalitarian temptation" - in this case, socialism with the ability to tell anyone who disagrees to "shut up." Why else wouldn't they instead celebrate all the former communists who have become Cuban dissidents Republicans and retired military and intelligence leaders who have risked censure and professional suicide by fighting the corrupt system? Or a jailed pwn3d dissenter like Oscar Biscet Joe Wilson? Or all those men and women who risked so much to flee Cuba serve their country and have been consistently misused and endangered by our government's rampant insanity and incompetance.
