(ESPN)   NFL refs to wear new uniforms which have "a more modern, updated, distinctly NFL look." If the new "NFL look" is to look like a jockey at a race track, they've hit it on the head   (sports.espn.go.com) divider line 95

"gone are the vertical stripes" and replaced with ... vertical stripes.

2006-08-04 08:46:19 AM
NFL referees in the 1930s wore "solid white dress shirts with bow ties and beanies."

I think the refs should get to use their throwback uniforms once or twice a year, just like some teams do/have done...

2006-08-04 08:54:16 AM
Was it just me, or did anyone notice that one of the refs in TFA picture had a BJ on his uniform? Just pointing that out because I feel very sick this morning.

\Which differs from other mornings how...?

2006-08-04 09:05:03 AM
You know what I'd like? If they just ref'd better. For the love of god, the over-calling last year was ridiculous -- let them showboat -- IT'S A GAME FERGODSAKE

Also - would you just let them hit each other -- christ almighty if 2 400lb men, wearing pads and understanding that their job is to mow down the guy in front of them, well, if they can't get a bit of lattitude, then fark it, football's gone sissy too.

2006-08-04 09:08:18 AM
It looks like they're trying to look European. Now I just wonder how long it will be before there are ads on the officials' uniforms.

A tip for future submitters, if you can't think of anything wittier for your headline then the insult that is already IN THE ARTICLE, just don't submit.

Heh, the guy in the pic has "BJ" on his uni

2006-08-04 09:59:22 AM
Oh come on now, it isn't that bad.

2006-08-04 09:59:35 AM
Will they be wearing jockey straps?

Apparently the ref is on BJ #25.

/I know, that was lame.

BJs for $25, BJs for $25

Come and get your BJs $25

2006-08-04 10:02:30 AM
Or is it how much he'll pay for a BJ?

2006-08-04 10:02:31 AM
I go to watch the officials.

2006-08-04 10:03:21 AM
BOOOO to the NFL. First we lose MNF to ESPN and now this....geez, what's next? Hmmm no tackling because someone might get hurt.

Do they come with free eye exams and glasses as well?

2006-08-04 10:05:58 AM
On the back of the other ref's jersey, it says "The Bear"

2006-08-04 10:06:18 AM
Distinctly NFL?

They look like soccer uniforms!

If our football refs have to look like soccer refs, then the pussification of America is complete...

Wow, referees are very slightly altering their uniforms, alert the media! Who cares? Let me know when they make some improvement on the lousy calls they consistently make.

And BJ is back judge and has been on official's uniforms for as long as I can remember, so if you're just catching on to making that joke now, it's kind of lame.

Do the new uniforms make it easier to ref with your head up your ass?

New NFL look and feel?

How come their hands are not in cuffs?

/Perhaps they are not from Cincinnati

"gone are the vertical stripes" and replaced with ... vertical stripes.

Here's the actual quote "Gone are the traditional vertical black-and-white stripes"

Traditionaly here meaning "equal and consistent width" stripes.

//GO BUCKS!

??? There are no Bucks in the NFL. Do you perhaps mean the Buccaneers? That would be Bucs.

2006-08-04 10:23:36 AM
I don't have a problem with the new look BUT it would be helpful to compare the old and new look side by side.

2006-08-04 10:26:01 AM
"what's next? Hmmm no tackling because someone might get hurt."
Already got that. It's called the Mike Vick rule.
It's all but a felony to hit a QB these days. Why not let them play from an armored car?

2006-08-04 10:27:42 AM
They continually stress that the uniform change was because of the material. Just because you change material doesn't mean you have to change the look! Gone are the traditions that made the NFL great. In are the greedy ideas of marketers and stuffed suits.

2006-08-04 10:27:45 AM
Wow..those are absolutely horrible. My aspirations of being an NFL ref have slipped a little today.

I thought "Queer Eye" was cancelled.

2006-08-04 10:31:21 AM
OMG, these unis are the ghey. If the league wanted to make the refs look more like middle-aged suburban lawnmowing chunkos, they could not have done a better job.

2006-08-04 10:34:10 AM
Welcome to the Roger Goodell era, folks.

unicornrider: I don't have a problem with the new look BUT it would be helpful to compare the old and new look side by side.

I agree. It would also be helpful if the old and new uniforms were being worn by busty female models.

Y'know. For research.

2006-08-04 10:36:46 AM
I imagine someone somewhere is deeply concerned with this major development.

First thing I noticed haha.

I take that back. After digging through some old NFL game day photo's I finally found one that had a ref it and I have to agree the new shirt design is Uglyyyyy by comparison. Fire the designer and the people who approved this piece of trash.

2006-08-04 10:41:36 AM
And they're STILL not as bad as the eye-meltingly bad kits the soccer referees in Italy are forced to wear.

One, two, Eddy's coming for you:

The mighty Hochuli will rip this shirt the first time he flex's. Then he will take on Chuck Norris in a death match.

2006-08-04 10:46:51 AM
ccguy - It was actually 36. Well, 37 if you include Dante...

2006-08-04 10:48:35 AM
Yeah, if think its rough being the Back Judge referee, you should here the ribbing the other refs give the Aft Tackle Marshall. "Common, biatch," they say, "you got my hot rod all dirty, now give me a car wash! Oh yeah, I know you love it dirty!"

Raccoon Dog

Y'all making fun of the back judge better watch out: you'll incur the wrath of Hochuli!

One, two, Eddy's coming for you:

Ed is the best! His new uniform will have the sleeves cut off so "Big Guns" Hochuli can really work the signals.

/Ed could take on Chuck Norris and probably block a leg kick
