Evansviile-area dweller, here. Do they really think our white trash pays attention to the news? They all have plasma TVs that they use to watch professional wrestling while the baby sleeps in the box the TV came in.

Evansville is one of the biggest crapholes I've ever been to. I can't believe they narrowed it down to only 10 bad houses.

Was it because of our delicious cantaloupe crop, MrPerfectSU?

Loves me some cantaloupe. This is a good time of year to live by the sandy river-bottom farm land. Relatively good, anyway.

as much as I want to respond to that flame, I'll let it go... I don't know where you were in E'ville, but I can list several comparable-sized and bigger and "better" cities that can't hold a candle to it.

/ok, ok, took the flame bait

2006-08-03 09:08:18 AM
I've been there for business a few times, and can't believe the number is only ten. The city, especially the older parts, reminds me of Cold War eastern Europe. Seriously rundown areas, terrible roads and no decent hotels, except for Casino Aztar which gives a scenic view of a gravel pit.

2006-08-03 09:09:06 AM
I'm close to Evansville, too, and I am also amazed that they're limiting it to 10 homes. They want to shame people into cleaning up; well, if they can live like that, they're not easily shamed. Methinks they need a different plan. Then again, if they think THOSE homes are bad, they've never been to Pike County. :O

i live in a delapadated house and i'm really getting a kick out of these responses.

I moved away from Evansville in 2001; If me and the wife hadn't bought a house we would move back there.
I'm ex-military, I've lived EVERYWHERE, and there is no place i've been that i'd rather move back to; best city to raise a family in in the country.
If you can get used to the Khaki uniform citywide and the for-some-reason terrible service at the fast food places.

2006-08-03 09:13:11 AM
That wasn't flamebait, that was a fact. I'm not sure exactly where I was either, and yes, there are definately worse places. But the whole town looked like it hadn't seen a can of paint in years.

I see this plan backfiring. Start looking for the underground "worst house competition" where people try to get on the list.

There is awesome cantelope in Indiana? I've been here two years and had no idea! probably because I am nursing law school hangovers in the morning rather than bothering to go to the farmer's market.

The more I think about it, I'm not sure why I am complaining about IN.

//originally from TX
///Texas' farked-upedness trumps Indiana's anyday

2006-08-03 09:51:00 AM
Oh yeah, the cantloupe has been excellent this year, very, very sweet. Get it straight from the farmer anywhere along 41 between Terre Haute and Evansville, especially between (the tiny towns of) Oaktown and Decker. I'm sure your local supermarket will carry melons from around here if you're still in Bloomington.

yep..i live within the city limits and driving in this city is ridiculous. the lloyd stopway is the worst highway ever (other than 41 with the nice Whirlpool stoplight)
Other than the driving though, I like this city. It's average, the politics are thick, but its a good place to raise a family.

Evansville's like every place else; there are really nice areas, really crappy areas, and a lot in between.

It is, however, so amazingly average that it is often used as a test market for products before they go national - sort of a municipal focus group or somthin'.

/westside is the best side.

Ah, Evansville. Just moved away a year ago after a 12 year stint.

Id agree that its not a bad place to live, in fact many of the neighborhoods within the city limits are quite nice. Lincolnshire for example (where i used to live). People tend to be quite friendly as well. Sometimes, on occasion, i do miss it.

The Lloyd does indeed, suck though. As does 41, Diamond, etc. I was amazed when i moved to Chicago and discovered what a real expressway was. Evansville road engineering in general is pretty bad. Laziness, incompetence, the works. It was a very nice change to find a well designed road system where i moved.

stupidfark

I concur.

2006-08-03 11:42:14 AM
The roads indeed suck. My dad does estimating for a local contractor and the officials in charge of setting budgets for projects think they're engineers a lot of the time, which screws things up most of the time.

In most cities, road crews work into the night to finish new road projects. Not the 'Ville. Everyone packs up promptly at 5, which means a project that should only take a month might take six months to finish. And when it is finished, it often causes as many projects as it solves.

I've driven on freeways all over the country and in the UK and I've never been as consistently terrified by idiots on the road as on Evansville's "Lloyd Widestreet."

Yup. Thats why that idiotic project on the Lloyd which shoulda only taken 2 years took 4.

Also, ill second you on the crappy drivers. Evansville drivers tend to be among the worst ive ever seen. They also seem to be consistently unable to merge, sitting at the end of the merge land with their left blinker on.

On a side note, I had no idea there were any Evansville farkers.

Seeing how they're in a state that takes pride in being hoosierish, this seems less likely to embarass and more likely to give these people some kind of celebrity status.

2006-08-03 01:44:48 PM
I live in nearby Newburgh, In and lived in Evansville for about 20-21 years. Evansville is not a bad place. I like it myself. Good amount of stuff to do and shop. It is a nice small town.

It has some problems like the above mentioned roads. The local drivers are horrible. I've seen people drive 20Mph over the limit and cut across lanes with no signal.

Yeah there are a lot of people who just don't take care of their properties. Heck there is one on Oak Grove Road near Castle Elementry that looks really crappy. Trash all over the year. Cars never move.. Really trashy.

Mayor Lloyd was abosultely pathetic I gotta agree. He had a stupid idea of bringing a AA or AAA level ball team to the area and building a stadium downtown. There was little to no interest from the public. Other people felt a mueseum or aquarium would be better. No he wanted the ballpark. Well the team had problems.. lots of past bills and such and finally he dropped it and decided not to go after that..

He was just pathetic..

I gotta tell ya...I love that all the streets are named after states. I can totally see the city planning board sittin' around maps and blueprints and such and one calls out "How 'bout namin' it for someone notable in the town? A founding father? An honorable philanthropist?" After a few minutes of labored silence..."Aw sheeeit, who am I kiddin'? Let's haul out the atlas."

Woo-hoo! My hometown made a fark headline on teh innernets!!1

2006-08-03 03:44:55 PM
WOOT!!! Evansville here too.

I work literally less than two miles from that house on Maryland. I'm gonna have to go by there.

As for a FARK party...maybe not Turoni's how about B-Dub's? ...or possibly downtown at Max and Erma's or The Jungle?

2006-08-03 03:58:30 PM
Ya ya, the bar in the basement at the Jungle would be a good spot, with those big wrap-around booths, cool lighting, etc.

Their new-ish owner is from Russia, and he's brought some awesome vodkas to the joint. Pity there's talk of a EVV fark thingy now. My parties are at 3 a.m., stumbling around in the dark trying to get used to the new loud thing in the crib. It's way awesomer than a hangover, tho.

2006-08-03 03:58:39 PM
man, if there's an E-ville fark party, we gotta have it the last week of December. I'll be home for my bro's wedding, and I still have to plan the bachelor party... takes all the work out of it for me!

Oh, and y'all are right about the traffic. I'll give you that. But I remember when the Lloyd was built... what was it, about 20 years ago now... and everyone said no way no how was that thing ever going to be used to its full potential. Sometimes you just can't account for explosive growth like that town experienced in the early to mid 90s.

And on a side note, I just returned there for the first time in about 3 years this last April. What the hell is happening to Green River Rd?

2006-08-03 04:03:51 PM
Cue smartass residents advertising their listing with yard banners: "#8 Worst house in Evansville!"

I love it when meddlesome neighbors get their comeuppance.

2006-08-03 04:24:51 PM
stupidfark

If you mean "what happened to all the insane traffic on Green River Rd?" it moved east to Burkhardt. If any part of town has become unregonizable to former 'villeans in the past decade it's there. The far westside (University Village area) too.

The biggest traffic on Green River seems to be north of Morgan, which has also blown up in recent years.

2006-08-03 04:37:43 PM
Yeah, basically. But it's gotten (more) run-down in the last few years

2006-08-03 05:10:56 PM
On burkhardt, the cliche about it all being cornfields is really quite true. Then it just exploded over the past few years. Its much better designed than Green, which was a pain in the ass to get around in though. What rather sucks is that the two major areas of commerce are about 20 minutes away from eachother (Burkhardt and the West Lloyd) so often you had to drive from one side of town to another. Ah, this is making me all nostalgic.

A fark party yall say? id be down with that, though id vote for either BW3s or the Jungle. Unless theyve somehow managed to build an irish pub recently? i dunno. Anyways, it should totally happen.

2006-08-03 11:33:33 PM
I live right across the river from Evansville. I do find it hilarious that E'Ville's road workers pack up at 5. I've been coming down 64 at 2AM and seen road workers out there under the big light trucks patching road up. I also love the fact (note the sarcasm) that Evansville closes down at 5PM on Sunday. It's a decent size city but there's nothing to do after 5 on Sunday other than the movies. During the week after about 10 you can either go to IHOP, Steak & Shake, B-Dubs or Wal-Mart.

/stops ranting.
//should be in bed already.
