All I got out of that is that Sosa didn't take roid still after Chicago...

Well he got at least one trade confused:

"July 31, 2004: Boston trades OF Henri Stanley to San Diego for OF Dave Roberts.

Result: Roberts hit only .256 in 45 games for the Red Sox and he was traded to the Dodgers after the season,"

Roberts was a Dodger, then got traded to Boston. He was subsequently sent to San Diego.

July 30, 2004: Tampa Bay trades RHP Victor Zambrano and RHP Bartolome Fortunato to the Mets for LHP Scott Kazmir and RHP Joselo Diaz.

Result: Zambrano pitched well in the latter part of the 2004 season, but he is under .500 the past two years and has an ERA over 6.00 this season. Fortunato has not been a factor. Kazmir is only 22 years old and an All-Star with a record better than .500, which is quite an accomplishment in Tampa Bay.

Sounds like this guy has no clue that Zambrano is out for the year after making only five starts.

This was a job for the obvious tag!

Ok, where's the "official MLB Trade Deadline" thread?? I need to get something off my chest...

Buster Olney is on crack. No getting around it. Yankees are in his top 3 for deadline moves??? Are you kidding??

They traded away yet more of their nonexistent farm system for a very disinterested outfielder and a guy who is only good enough to compete with the rest of the "bullpen" in NY.

Then they get rid of a starting pitcher (not one having a good season, but still) for a guy who they essentially could have picked up about an hour later when Chris Shelton was designated for assignment. (Look it up, their numbers are strikingly similar.)

Not to mention that they didn't get another starter, they didn't visibly improve their bullpen, and all so they could essentially exchange Bernie Williams for Juice-ambi in the DH spot.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. One of these days, the future will catch up with this team. And all of major league baseball will be flat on their asses laughing.

It's further down the page but: You're insane.

Lidle is better than Chacon or Ponson, the current bottom of their rotation.

Abreu is better than Melky, as much as I love the Melk.

Casey is an upgrade over Andy Phillips and lets Giambi move to DH until Sheff returns. Next year, Sheff's contract expires, Giambi moves to full time DH and Casey takes over first.

They improved in all three moves. It cost them four OK prospects and a pitcher they were likely going to DFA anyway.

Three of the guys they traded have very little worth. One (Smith) might be a decent relief pitcher. Whoop-dee-doo. In return, they got a guy who's a significant offensive and defensive upgrade over the Aaron Guiel/Bernie Williams tandem in right field. They also got a fifth starter who's much better than anybody else they've run out there in that spot.

Then they get rid of a starting pitcher (not one having a good season, but still) for a guy who they essentially could have picked up about an hour later when Chris Shelton was designated for assignment. (Look it up, their numbers are strikingly similar.)

Shelton was sent down, not DFA'd. And Chacon was horrible this year. He was going to get released, so, again, they gave up nothing.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. One of these days, the future will catch up with this team. And all of major league baseball will be flat on their asses laughing.

And if Henry, Smith, Monasterios, or Sanchez become good enough Major Leaguers to make the Yankees regret this trade, I'll eat my hat. They didn't trade any of their (few) real prospects - Hughes, Tabata, Cox, Cabrera, etc., nor did they lose anybody worth anything off their Major League roster.

Abreu is not replacing Melky. Melky is going to continue playing LF until Matsui returns. Abreu is replacing Guiel/Williams.

Details... either way Melky is out of an MLB job in September and will probably get shipped off somewhere in the offseason.

Melky should end up a Met since we're out a wily frenchman...then again if Sanchez is farked...Roberto Horrendous isn't actually horrendous. I just wish they coulda got something for Heilmann since the kid obviously doesn't want to be there...

Methinks you mean Wilson. Casey went to Detroit.

Yeah, he's totally getting traded, what with his being 21 and with a couple of options left.

He'll likely be the Yankees' fourth outfielder next year, get plent of playing time, and be allowed to blossom into whatever he's going to blossom into.

As pointed out, Shelton wasn't DFA. But Wilson can also play some outfield and be a third catcher. Shelton doesn't.

Wilson has a .959 career OPS against lefties. Shelton is .803.

Wilson is a great pickup for the Yankees -- especially considering that with Giambi/Abreu/Cano/Damon/Matsui they're going to be facing a lot of lefties.

No way in hell he gets traded unless he's part of a blockbuster deal for an established young star. They aren't going to trade him for an old veteran.

My prediction is that he stays in Columbus next year, but if either Matsui or Abreu are out for anything other than a couple of days, he's back up and starting. I think they'd rather that he play every day in Columbus than sit on the bench in New York.

Before the Abreu trade, Cabrera had the inside track to be the starting RF in 2007. That gets pushed back a year, but he's so young that it's not a big deal.

They could've saved money for this offseason's free agents by not trading for Abreu, but why? The upcoming FA class sucks. After 2007, the huge contracts of Abreu, Posada, and Johnson come off the books. After 2008, it's Giambi and Pavano, and the last of the awful Randy Levine backloaded contracts will be gone. There's a light at the end of the tunnel for the dead weight on the Yankee payroll. As long as Cashman remains in charge, the payroll won't be as ridiculous or fatty as it has been for the past few years.

Yeah, because the Yankees are usually gung ho about holding onto their up and coming talent.

They are this year, otherwise at least one of Cabrera, Hughes, Cox, or Tabata would've been traded by now. Cashman is back in charge, with Gene Michael at his side and minimal interference from Steinbrenner or his Tampa lackeys. The last time that happened, they didn't trade highly-touted youngsters named Rivera, Jeter, or Posada.
