Well...I hope Stargate Command doesn't leave or that place will be completely abandoned.

What about the santa tracker??

It was when the Dawson's Creek Trapper Keeper Ultrakeeper Futura 2000 assimilated with the supercomputer at Cheyenne Mountain that it was able to fuse into all defensive computers!

The world is going to end!

UberDave: I hope Stargate Command doesn't leave or that place will be completely abandoned.

That's WHY NORAD is leaving -- they need to make room for all the space the Stargate program now needs.

Are they going to convert it to a hurricane shelter for the gulf coast states? It'd be good for that.

Or maybe they'll convert it to condos for the extremely paranoid.

So that's why it's empty on Judgement Day when John Conner and Katherine Brewster show up.

Reality of a missle strike is increasing every day albeit it isn't as high as it was 20 years ok.

They will continue to operate from the mountain redunancy is key as any future neclear attack will be done as a suprise. False targets are useful in this regard.

Really it's just because nobody's felt comfortable working there since they discovered that balrog.

2006-07-28 09:46:15 AM
So who's going to break the news to the WOPR?!

2006-07-28 09:46:21 AM
It'll be converted into a "national park". One you cant go in, go near, surrounded by barbed wire and sensors everywhere, armed guards at all road postings. But really no one will work there. Really.
Or it'll be like the stupid missle silos here in AZ where they just pull all the neat gear out and let people in for an outrageous fee.

We'll miss you, General Beringer.

"Adm. Tim Keating, who commands both NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command, said the government's best intelligence "leads us to believe a missile attack from China or Russia is very unlikely."

That, along with the emergence of varied terrorist threats such as suicide bombers, "is what recommends to us that we don't need to maintain Cheyenne Mountain in a 24/7 status. We can put it on `warm standby,'" Keating told the newspaper."

While technically he's right, I'd sleep better if somebody was out there, you know, watching out for our annihilation.

oh yeah - we're gonna renovate it then not use it for anything.

I, too, call shennanigans.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and the economy is a natural system, so if NORAD moves out, somebody will ultimately move in.

/Wonders what convincing target Adam Selene would launch rocks at instead?

Actually not a bad idea. They can afford it.

They're gonna turn it into Cheney's new bunker!
Cheney's Cheyenne retreat!

You have a long and distinguished career ahead of you as a Fox News Military Analyst.

/neclear attack a suprise? no way.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but this is baffling to me. They're moving out of the bunker and into a non-nuke resistant installation that's within the theoretical range of North Korea's missiles?

I don't like to see the government waste money, but I think that the Cheyenne Mountain is an expense that no one minds paying for.

So that's why it's empty on Judgement Day when John Conner and Katherine Brewster show up.

didn't that technically happen in 1997 ?

Mr. McKittrick, after very careful consideration, sir, I've come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks.

They're getting Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall to watch the place.

Canadian crews stationed at Cheyenne Mountain will also make the move to Peterson, Keating said.

"Keating was scheduled to make the announcement Friday. He said 230 surveillance crew members and an undetermined number of the support staff will make the move within two years."

Until I read the part about keeping it on one-hour standby in case of an emergency, I had dreams of the ultimate urban exploration mission.

This just makes me wonder:

1) What kind of digging they have been doing under Peterson Air Force Base

2) What new super top secret sh*t they are starting at Cheyenne Mtn that they need to draw attention away from.

/Wraps another layer of foil around tin foil pirate hat and closes door on subterrainian basement bunker.

2006-07-28 10:18:13 AM
In TFA it says they are only moving to Peterson AFB (not that far away) and they're going to keep it on standby, able to be back online in 1 hour.

I'm sort of bummed though--NORAD would be an awesome place to tour.

2006-07-28 10:19:56 AM
I loled hard at the Balrog comment. I can't wait until they incorporate this news into SG-1, it will make an interesting episode for sure.

They have spent 700 million modernizing it, and now they are leaving it? Tax dolllars well spent.

Yeah. They really proved that on 9/11. Ever since I've wondered just how nessacary NORAD was.

If you keep something on 'one hour standby', are you really closing it?

You rock for that comment.

Civilan jetliners were never considered threats before that date.
