Well, I obviously got away with murdering that one bookie who wouldn't pay up when I told him "all of it" on France surrendering in the World Cup. I see no merit in his argument, though.

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"... yeah I can see that being a bit negative. But hey, the city isn't exactly built on the grandest of moral platforms.

And really, if "what happens in Vegas" is a dead hooker you need to take her the fark out of Vegas and bury her in the desert if you want to get away with it. Stupid slogan.

"What happened to the image Vegas was pushing a few years ago, of the new "family friendly" Las Vegas?"

"Family friendly" isn't as profitable as "pure decadence".

I love going to Vegas for a few days. The flights going in have people reading their "how to beat the house" books, and the flights leaving have people wondering how they'll keep their house.

2006-07-27 02:37:08 PM
spleef420: I swear to god I'll slap the piss out of ANYONE that actually believes this shiat.

So will I. Mr. Vassiliadis needs to change this stupid slogan. I get it from people all the time since I'm from LV. "You can do whatever you want there, huh?" they always ask.

Yes, Publikwerks, we have SEVERAL Outbacks. Yes, the Sin City thing does playon people's minds and we set it up that way. Family friendly went away when they realized that young people will empty their bank accounts just to be able to go home and say "Oooh...we spent 500 bucks at Light! We're cool!"

2006-07-27 02:44:37 PM
Simply put...

They know they make money off people behaving badly. They have an INDUSTRY BUILT AROUND THE IDEA. They openly publicize the idea of doing things in Vegas you would NEVER do at home. Then they are shocked when people do things in Vegas that, dare I say it, THEY WOUDN'T DO AT HOME!

If you want a nice tidy orderly law abiding city then don't bill yourself as the sleazy No-tell Motel of vacation destinations.

As one of these California Fark ups let me apologize on behalf of my bretheren. I make the trip about twice a year. I love Vegas. I am appalled at all the UCLA, USC, etc frat boys that treat your town like their own personal Sodom and Gammorah (sp). Yes the rules are a bit more "relaxed" in Vegas but it is no excuse for being a total Asshat. If you are getting in trouble there you have some serious social development to do.People need to realize that yes, Vegas is a blast but it is not a vehicle for breaking the law. That's what Atlantic City is for.

Pretty vague article. He mentions lots of night clubs, so I'm assuming he's referring to drugs. Easy fix: legalize. Massively increase tourism and have a nice showdown with the Federal government. Soon it will be as clean and happy as Amsterdam!

I think every public image of Vegas was a lie. There's no hot chicks in vegas. Even the prostitutes on the billboards aren't good looking. Everyone is fat, old, and white. I was pretty annoyed when I got there and saw how gross it was.

I didnt bother going to any nightclubs. I'm pretty sure a club filled with tourist douchebags is easily the worst ever, no matter how 'exclusive' they try to be. Mostly I ended up walking around, drinking, and looking at buildings.

The best part of Vegas is you can smoke and drink anywhere. But if you want real decedance, go somewhere without a stupid tourist population. Better parties, better food, better culture, better drugs.

the Strip is the worst part of this town. try going off the strip and you'll find Vegas to be much more interesting that you think. It's not like TJ or NOLA where you're going to get rolled if you walk a half block off the strip.

I didnt bother going to any nightclubs.

and yet you seem to know for a fact that it's going to be full of "tourist douchebags"?

Vegas is a helluva lot more than a ten mile stretch of hookers and donkey shows...try going to a locals casino before you slam the entire city.

What happened to the image Vegas was pushing a few years ago, of the new "family friendly" Las Vegas?

Dead and rotting. It's hard to have an environment that's "family friendly" if the cops cite your kids for walking down the strip past 9pm.

Go down to the strip any weekend night or any night during the summer and you'll cops clustered around the south end (MGM Grand/NYNY/Monte Carlo area) of the strip near the CVS on one side and/or Walgreens on the other with the primary purpose of issuing citations to people under 18 doing nothing other than walking down the strip-I saw one asshole cop snag 4 kids coming out of the CVS. They weren't causing any problems, they were just under 18 past 9pm. He and his nasty(personality) butch female partner spent a good 90 minutes citing these 4 for nothing other than curfew violation. I managed to cross the street opposite the Bellagio, get some pics of the Bellagio, head towards the Monte Carlo for more pics, cross LV Blvd at Tropicana (NYNY to MGM Grand) and head back towards the CVS and the cops were still citing those same 4 people.

The only other offense I soemtimes see these cops citing people for is passengers drinking in the car-another (IMO) low priority offense.

Numerous cops dressed in green "Gang Unit" gear walk around a very small area near the south end of the strip asking anyone who appears to be under 18 for ID and warning them that if the "patrol officers" (yellow shirts and tan uniformed officers) see them, they'll be cited.

Go towards the middle of the strip and the north end, and you'll rarely even see a cop car much less officers patrolling like they are on the south end.

If this is how the LVMPD allocates their officers, no wonder there are problems. They have dozens of officers clustered at one end of a long, large, high density, heavily foot travelled public street for the main purpose of citing someone for doing nothing other than walking down the street, with two or three officers standing around for as long as 25 minutes for each person being cited.

These cops could patrol the whole strip and possibly catch actual criminals, but that would involved actually doing real police work and possibly getting their hands dirty with real criminals.

Until the police dept reallocates its resources towards stopping crime with actual victims, everyone will suffer.

spleef420: North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin and Boulder City

Summerlin is a planned community within LV, Boulder City is too far away to count in my book.

So I make it three.

Grandemadaca: Summerlin is a planned community within LV, Boulder City is too far away to count in my book.

Summerlin is trying to become a separate township like Henderhole...probably not until 2010-2015 though. Boulder City was a poor choice, it's more like Provo than Vegas.

The strip is good for a night or 2 then you realize it's all the same. I have a good friend that lives out there and we go to the clubs/bars/hangouts the locals frquent and I have a better time than if I stuck to the strip. What people (some people)don't think about is that Vegas is a city like any other but smack dab in the middle is an adult Disneyland. My recomendation is find a good cab driver, one that knows more than the clubs and bars he is paid to take you to, and find out where the "normal Vegas" people go. You will have better stories and a better time than all those frustrated secretaries/fratbrothers that hang out at Coyote Ugly all week.

And I used to think I was the only person in the world who has no interest in going to Vegas. I'm sure it is a nice city, but I don't need to go a gazillion miles away to be drunk and decadent. I also don't gamble. And I live in NYC, so we have great shows.

Can anyone tell me what else there is to do in Vegas?

/really dunno

good luck with that. The clubs pay the cabbies to drop suckers at their doors.

best bet? make friends with locals, we know all the spots and usually aren't paid shills for the nightclubs and tittybars.

I actually have a cabbies number on my mobile. I call him before I get into town and he hooks me up and my buddie from high school lives out there. He manages one of the clubs on the strip. (I don't know which one because we never go there, but I think it's in the Luxor) He knows a lot of the other club owners/managers and we go to those places and get hooked up as well. I am like the poormans version of a high roller out there. It's not the money I have though it's just the friends I have made. DO you have any suggestions though?
