Thank god I don't work out in Parsippany anymore.

Between all the crap on 280, the work on 1/9 and the covered roadway, and now this, it is going to be basically impossible to get to western jersey.

2006-07-27 10:17:34 AM
I'm so glad I don't have to go near 78, ever.

Jesus I hate this goddamn state. More and more governmental bullshiat, and I don't think our collective bungs can take much more stretching. They're doing this kind of crap more and more...kind of a "oh, you didn't get the memo?" sort of thing.

2006-07-27 10:22:18 AM
Well this is gonna suck and make every other road in the northern half of the state suck too.

2006-07-27 10:24:03 AM
Fark.
Well, looks like it's time to start taking the back roads to work.
FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.
/for that matter, when are they gonna be done with the Routes 46/80/23 debacle?

Wait ... they actually repair the highways in NJ?

letdown102: Wait ... they actually repair the highways in NJ?

No they are just putting in more toll booths.

Yeah, right now they're working on redoing Route 18 (main highway through New Brunswick) as well. Supposedly it'll be finished causing traffic headaches about the time gas hits $5 per gallon.

FWIW PennDOT beats NJDOT any day. There's two overpasses near my parents' house outside Philly that haven't been completed in THREE farkING YEARS.

2006-07-27 10:31:54 AM
Wait ... they actually repair the highways in NJ?

If by "repair", you mean "close off a lane or two for 3 miles so that the DOT workers can eat lunch in the middle of the road while laughing at drivers", then yes.

2006-07-27 10:32:29 AM
Tom_Slick: No they are just putting in more toll booths.

You mean the well thought out ones with the EZPass lanes all the way on the right hand side so you need to cross 6 lanes of stopped traffic to reach them? I love those!

/fark NJDOT. Took me nearly 5 hours to get home from Newark last Friday.

2006-07-27 10:33:21 AM
Ugh, this is going to kill my school/work commute. *looks up new routes*

That stretch of 18 between Commercial Ave and 27 is the bane of my existance.

I take 287 to 78 in the morning, and generally by the time I get off at exit 45, the traffic is still pretty good. However, the section that is being worked on on 78 IS how I get home from work in the afternoon, as the GSP has no tolls between 78 and 1.

They got a lot of plans for 287 as well. I think the Exit 10 (Easton Ave, Somerset) interchange is due for a complete overhaul in a few years. As if the traffic through there isn't bad enough as it is.

Easton Ave is bad enough as it is. The 4 miles I spend on Easton take as much time as the rest of my 35-mile commute.

I feel really bad for anyone who has to drive that route normally, with all this crap going on, that's going to BLOW. Hell I feel bad for anyone who has to drive to work period.

I haven't driven to work since I used to live in Point Pleasant and worked in Manhattan/Jersey City, that farking sucked. I then moved back to Hoboken, made that Manhattan commute a breeze, now I'm solely in my Jersey City office and living in Bayonne. I'm out the door at 8:35, in my office at 9, it's awesome. God bless the Light Rail (when it's actually running).

Wait ... they actually repair the highways in NJ?

No, they just try.

I get the best of both worlds - I live outside of Philly and commute to Newark several times a month. It's the joy of all joys.

By the way, if any Farkers need to spend the night in Newark I highly recommend the Hampton Suites in Harrison. It's right across the river from downtown, has free parking, and a decently stocked bar with an awesome bartender who pours drinks strong enough to make spending time in Newark almost bearable!

/for that matter, when are they gonna be done with the Routes 46/80/23 debacle?

Seeing as they were already working on that back when I started college 10 FARKING YEARS AGO, I suspect they will be done 2 weeks from never. I can't imagine what they are doing to a 5 mile strech of road that takes over 10 years to complete.

I actually half a theory that the work over there is just what we do with our construction crews when there is nothing else going on.

Sorry to break this to you, but it's supposed to last until December. And that's just the express lanes. Then, they're going to start work on the local lanes once the express is reopen.

I'm kinda liking Jodi Applegate over on 5.

Oh, and, your welcome.

2006-07-27 10:58:15 AM
Oh that's just swell. Why does the movie "Falling Down" keep coming into my head?

"What's wrong with the roadway?"

I had to switch gyms because the Route 46/80/23 construction made the commute to the gym take 50% longer than normal. And I only live like 8 miles away from that nightmare. Going to the Willowbrook Mall is a real pain ass now.

NJ's DOT is a shining bastion of efficiency compared to PennDOT. I drove through west Philly last weekend and there were highway exit signs where the numbers were completely worn off. There were shapes of interstate 'badges', but no numbers on 'em.

And 80? Please.

The article touches on a few things, but for those that didn't read the original stories, here's what happened with Rt 78:

The first notice that *anyone* received about the construction project were road signs put up on Monday saying the express lanes would be shut down on Friday. The newspapers didn't know about it. NJ 101.5, the local radio station, didn't know about it. The State Police apparently didn't know about it. The towns which will get overrun with redirected traffic didn't know about it. Heck, not even the DOT webpage had it anywhere.

This was either a Sunday night decision, or something that DOT administrators kept putting off as "Eh, I'll get around to announcing it later". Sadly enough, both options are believable when it comes to NJDOT.

No kidding. They start construction at the most random times and it never seems to get finished.

2006-07-27 11:24:03 AM
It's summertime in Joisey.......
Time to close the roads and creat a great clusterfark.......

Also time to close all but one lane on the complete length of the Turnpike bridge from Bayonne to Newark each weekend so they can work on a 50 foot section by the airport toll......

Sux if your coming out of the Holland Tunnel...........

2006-07-27 11:25:27 AM
Bleh. I used to live in Hunterdon and worked in Morristown. 78 to 287. What a farking drag, even under the best of circumstances.

Did they ever farking add to the two lanes on 287 going up the hill to the Morristown exits? I never understood how they could take a four lane highway and shrink it to two lanes right at the base of a huge incline. Once the trucks are forced to slow down it's game over.

onecanshort: I then moved back to Hoboken, made that Manhattan commute a breeze, now I'm solely in my Jersey City office and living in Bayonne.

Didn't know you left Hoboken.

I occasionally do the drive from Brick to NYC. What a nightmare. All praise be to XM to make it somewhat comfortable. Of course, that's a much more acceptable commute than my usual Brick to Cranbury drive where I get the lovely and scenic Route 9.

It's no wonder I try to work from home at least twice a week...

I believe the section of 287 is what I refer to as "the curves of doom" as you're often taking an insane curve trapped between the guardrail and an 18-wheeler. There are 3 or 4 lanes there now (depending on whether or not there's an exit lane present)

Not me. onecanshort apparently moved to Bayonne. You two can go drinking, I'm going to wallow in my misery of living in Brick.

I grew up in Jersey City, so I know Bayonne pretty well. I kinda miss being up north, but then again - not really.

Howdy neighbor, I'm hardly a Bayonnite just moved there and I'm rarely at my apt, but I can see myself spending lotsa time at the Big Apple on Broadway, good pies and lots TVs for football season!

Just moved about 3 months ago, but that doesn't mean I've "left Hoboken", I'm still there all the time.

A bit off tangent to the topic, but any farkers know of the restaurant called "EAT" off 1/9 in Woodbridge? Just this large sign that says "EAT". I heard to food is passable

19 years? Damn that's a long time! So you'd probably be a good person to ask this, I've seen a TON of Polish deli's in town, which one's the best?
