Guysmiley: A properly wielded quarter staff can pwn a swordsman let alone someone with a knife. It can't KILL as effectively as a sword, but you can sure as hell control the fight.

He should know ... after all he is training to be a cage fighter.

I for one just feel blessed that we have someone on the Fark boards like REOIV who is been in hundreds of knife on hand fights, and can warn us not to try it.

Thank you sir, thank you for saving us all from a good stabbing!

That pu$$y douchenozzle would not have the balls to take on 6 MEN, he is someone who preys on people that are easy targets like women and children. Hell tried to run away. Knife or no knife, he would not have fought the MEN.

/bullet to the head, he is not going to ever get better or contribute to this world. ever. never. ever.

Tent poles are for the other end, Goetz.

Guysmiley: Wrong. A properly wielded quarter staff can pwn a swordsman let alone someone with a knife. It can't KILL as effectively as a sword, but you can sure as hell control the fight.

Yeah cause average people know how to properly wield a quarter staff. And they just happen to be laying about all the time.

A shovel is not a quarter staff or bo staff.

Nevermind the fact that if the guy is properly trained with a knife they can close and kill before you react with your bo staff.

Hell even an average person with a steak knife could close and wound/kill on a bo staff wielder.

One easy way is cut at the arms/hands holding the bo staff then the person.

Any basic melee sparing will show you that your hands get hit a ton, and hit with a knife you can kiss your fingers and grip good bye.

your first attack doesn't have to (and probably shouldn't) be a full 'batter's swing' if you're within five feet of the guy, but why would you be any closer than 6-8 feet? especially if you have a shovel with a good 5'-6' reach.

My guess is you have never been in/seen a fight with weapons before. They don't stay at 6-8 feet and a person can close that distance in under a second. FASTER THAN YOU CAN REACT. Read up on reactionary gap.

A quick jab with the spade to the face or chest, followed by a swing...
Hopefully you hit with the jab cause if you miss they are on you. Your plan is based on the jab causing enough of a daze to keep them from charging and stabbing blindly. Not a great plan there.

hmmm... not much background info on the construction workers in that article. I smell a conspiracy.

What I learned in knife-defense training is that you are gonna get cut the hell up.

This is why I study gun-fu.

He's lucky I didn't catch him, or his eyes would be missing in that pic.
2006-07-27 01:05:30 PM
I certainly wouldn't want to face anyone with a knife, but if I did I would opt for a shovel handle. Fake to the head, followed by a broken kneecap. If you can cripple mobility, then you've got him. Problem is, you get one chance before he gets inside, and then you're swiss cheese.

"So, you're new to this Billy? Well, here, let me show you how to lay bricks. You take the brick and... hey, do you hear someone screaming?"

Wow, lots of Narutards in here. Every one of them acting out some knife vs melee weapon fight scenerio like it was a controlled scientific experiment.

Recidivism rates, huh? I can't wait for some of the champions of sex offenders and pedos start up their usual yammering about how pedos and rapists have a right to molest and destroy lives. "But, but, but....recidivism rates are so low! We need to coddle and cuddle these little darlings and give them cocoa and fluffy pillows! After all, no one wants to see an 18 year old farking his 17 year old GF in jail! WHAAHH!"::snort:: See, this is what I mean, people. He is a sex offender not doing his 17 year old GF, not taking a piss in the bushes, none of that other BS sex offender defenders like to throw out there. For actually doing what he is wired to do - be a sexual predator.

/flame on, I don't care

My mother has always offered this bit of advice:

"If someone tries to make you get in a car and go somewhere, fight them with all you've got. Once you get in that car you're as good as dead, and no one will be able to find you to help."
2006-07-27 01:31:36 PM
Oh, oh, oh. We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we? Getting all high and mighty, eh? Fresh fruit not good enough for you eh?

Sheesh...some people take themselves just a little too seriously. Good thing we have the truly cool people to explain what real life is like.

They should have never called the cops, should have just buried them in concrete and been done with it.

My wife had encounter with a rapist about 12 years ago.
Luckily she was walking our 125 pound shep/rot mix. Brutus put him down and stood over him with his teeth about 1/2 an inch from his throat till the cops got there. When the cops showed up he just sat down and let them do their job.

Cops told the wife they had been looking for this guy for weeks in connection with 5 rapes.

Lol. I love how all the Portlanders are pulling an "Iceland".
("what's that? Lonely Nordic babes and hot springs? Uh maybe, but I'm not sure there's room for one more and anyway doesn't GREENland sound even better? Oh, make sure to burn your ship after landing too.")

But what if we had..... LASERS... yeah that's it.

Oh, and knife fighting dude, quit being such a tard.

The good news is they will let him out of prison in a few years to make room for the REALLY dangerous pot smokers out there.

SoulSaver: REOIV, the internet ninja. Coming to a theatre near you.

Nah not a ninja, just tired of bullshiat of how bad ass everyone is.

Go to an emergency room and look at the people being sewn up from knife fights.

Hell Trauma Life in the ER on TLC shows those and gun shot wounds and the knife wounds are always way worse. Even when the knife is tiny.

I have seen 3 people stabbed in my life (one stabbed a guy he didn't like then got beat up and stabbed with his own knife and the other was stabbed for being a wanna be Blood).

In both incidents it was way more bloody, brutish and quick than movies or martial arts would love to show you.

Hell by the time you register that you have been stabbed you can be stabbed again. Shock is a biatch.

But I am the internets tough guy. Just making it up.

"A butt load of gangs want me cause I'm pretty good with a bo staff."

If you think I am full of shiat ask a cop.

If you think I am full of shiat read about reactionary gap and why law enforcement teaches people to be mindful of it.

If you think I am full of shiat get a magic marker and a broom handle and have one friend get you with the broom before you hit them with the magic marker.

If you think I am full of shiat take a knife and see what you can cut through with in one swing. Or how far you can jab it into a raw steak.

If what I am saying seems so far out of reality just try it.

My examples don't require years of technique to be good.
My examples don't even require that much effort other than having a friend and spending 5 minutes trying to draw on them.

But sure I am full of it. Ok

Which is why IF you are attacked with a knife. You MUST react with disabilitating force b/c being turned into swiss cheese not fun....

Duh Sandi the pen does 1d4 -2 and the sword clearly does 1d8 though if it is a bastard sword you could be doing a sweet 1d10.

REOIV: SoulSaver: However, if he brandished the weapon when me and my co-workers caught up with him, he would be in for a beat down of epic proportions.

Yeah cause it is easy to beat down people with knives....

However, if this construction worker is going up against a man with a knife, it's entirely possible that things might not work out so good for knife-boy, because I not only have two or three of these:

in my truck at all times, but I also tote around one of these:

I'm sure they had some cement handy, so I would have suggested they give the gentleman a new pair of shoes and take him on a fun trip to the nearest body of water.

SoulSaver: However, if he brandished the weapon when me and my co-workers caught up with him, he would be in for a beat down of epic proportions.

Yeah cause it is easy to beat down people with knives....

you sir have just become the perfect example of why this world is running short of heroes and also why these 6 men truly deserve the hero tag. heroes don't stop to think of whether they will be cut if they try to save someone who is really in trouble. they don't sit down and analyse how much blood they will lose or what stab wounds look like. therefore i'm so glad there are still people like these heroic construction workers who are willing to step up to the challenge unhesitatingly.
