#1. "There's two sets of odds that make this discovery really way out. First of all, it's unlikely that something this fragile could survive buried in a bog at all, and then for it to be unearthed and spotted before it was destroyed is incalculably more amazing."

#2. "The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel."

#3. "DUBLIN, Ireland - Irish archaeologists Tuesday heralded the discovery of an ancient book of psalms by a construction worker who spotted something while driving the shovel of his backhoe into a bog."

There have been things found in the bogs that were a thousand years old and have survived like they were buried yesterday.

I call No Shenanigans.

They make no estimate of the age of the book.

I would think they would have a basic idea just by looking at the lettering and paper.

Religious scripts are vague in nature. Otherwise, they wouldn't be believed.

muninsfire I was gonna say the same Got-damned thing. You can't crack a book in the bible without reading a story of the oppression (or the heroics) of the isrealites.

Strange enough, if you crack the Quran, the same stories are told of the same battles; only portraying the muslims as the oppressed and the heroes.

So either this scottish construction worker can read Latin or he marked left the book opened to the same page until the archaeologists arrived.

Very plausible.

MoldyLoaf Uh, given that the pages are all stuck together, it'd be much weirder if it wasn't opened to the same page.

The really impressive thing is that the bog owner knew to keep it covered in dirt so it wouldn't dry out; I wouldn't have known that.

shiat.

If the Powers That Be wanted to make it really creepy, that bugger would've been the book of Revelation.

I've seen Nick Cage movies more interesting than this.

muninsfire: Pattern recognition. Open up any random page in the bible, and I betcha you can find something relevant to today. Go ahead, try it.

I tried it. Three times.

1st time: Old Testament. About 4 different things on the page, one dealing with something sorta like the headline.

2nd time: Old Testament again. 5 different things. Some stuff about Israel, but not so relevant to the current conflict.

3rd time: New Testament. Nothing to do with Isreali wars.

The chances of this page aren't that suprising, since it's an Old Testament book. It was written for Jews/Israel. But there's still a fairly large section (two whole books, I think) that are just Hebrew laws, ("Don't smash your testicles, nlo sex with goats, etc.) so it's not like it would almost have to be a page about an Israeli war.

Another big unknown factor here is the size of the font, and thus the number of verses on one page.

2006-07-26 12:04:39 AM
yea, i definately first read that as 'blog'

2006-07-26 12:05:28 AM
My guess is the whole thing is a section that deals with the destruction of Israel. But it's a good way to get publicity for your find if you don't point that out.

I googled psalm 83...

"For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison: Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth. Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession. O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind. As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire; So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish: That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth." Psalm 83:2-18

....if this story is true that is some heck of a coincidence. Israel is about to invade Tyre soon I heard on the news.
