AHeitman:

The first lesson I learned in engineering school was "there ain't no free lunches!" We optimize in the most practical way to produce real products. Message boards could be such a powerful way to energize the American populace on critical issues, but the technology gets crowded out by flamewars over Republican vs. Democrat.

By the way, where are you? I run a mid-sized engineering firm and might be interested in a chat regarding your mid-career switch!

2006-07-25 03:56:39 PM: Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark]: mkfreeberg: the Watermelons (green on outside, red on inside) Oh, that's adorable. I simply must remember that witty repartee.

Not sure how geographically far apart we are, Mr. "most people think they are in OR by now." But the Watermelons are a force to be reckoned with where I am.

The raw data that helped to p0wn submitter substantiate that. One over-gigawatt facility in the last twenty years. One. Smog checks up the butt. Sniffing the tailpipes and snapping pictures of license plates at the freeway entrance ramps. They get the program going when the Sacramento valley turns to pea soup, then they peel it back when they figure out the poor people are getting hit harder, then they reinstate it again.

It kinda makes sense to a point when you have a major metropolitan area stuck in a valley. But the Watermelons have achieved a weird, Mafioso "Don't Fark With Me" level of power. They live down in LA, and help make the rules up here in Sac. What kills me, is they're flying around in Gulfstream jets while they're yelling at people for driving Toyota Rav-4's. It's just amazing no one, besides the right-wing crew we aren't supposed to be reading, ever nails them for it.

Im not so sure of that, especially the republican controlled congress part. I had family that was working at the capital during that time and it certainly didnt seem as such. Moreover, Gray Davis is a slimey slimey politician. That has little to do with the current crisis, its just my estimation from seeing his activities first hand.

I won't deny that Davis was slimey. I said as much in my Boobies. However, he was not a proponent of deregulation. Mind you, I don't believe for an instant that his opposition was, in any sense of the term, principled; however, deregulation is one of those political footballs with those on the right promoting it and those on the left opposing it (with very few exceptions and very little variance).

Davis is directly responsible for a lot of things (as noted, the multi-billion dollar budgetary FUBAR), but the partial deregulation of the California energy market is not one of them.

Someone else posted that deregulation was actually passed during Wilson's term, which may be the case. I don't remember precisely when degregulation became a reality. I do, however, have clear memories of Davis being in opposition to it.

I am open to being convinced otherwise. I had always been slightly confused about Davis and deregulation, I agree that it is predominantly a Republican concept, but for some reason I remember him being gung-ho about the whole idea with some weird Democrat support in both houses. The bigger issues remaining from that whole debacle of his governance is the budget mess. My family was on the appropriations committee there and they would come home absolutely agast at what was transpiring.

Not much time for that and enjoy reading. again, thats great. more people should do this. i try. tho i do love me some [adult swim], which admittedly is from Atlanta, but, not the content. ;)

Turn on the radio: Howard's in New York. i meant music, but fair enough

or pop in a CD: Download music illegally for listening Pleasure. yes, but the music itself is made in California, no matter how you aquire it. :)

Use your iPod or xbox or PDA, dont use Yahoo!,MSN
Do not use any of the above. but another 100,000,000 or so do
Google: just opened up shop in Michigan. yes, but you dont call GM a California company, just because they have an office here. Google is a distinctly bay area effort.

Make sure your net traffic doesnt go through any Cisco routers or swtiches or SUN servers, while you are at it, you better make sure you dont use DNS or IP while online:
I'm sure it wouldn't take long to be back up. The Internet is dead as disco without Cisco gear. And by logical conclusion, there is no Internet without TCP/IP, and no WWW without DNS, both developed at UC Berkeley, as were many OS's which run the Net in general.

Drink most domestic wine:
It's either home brew or European for me. I havent found any California wines I like, but really, I dont like most wines unless they are German or Port

Buy any Chinese made products at WAL*MART:
Refuse to shop at WAL*MART, in fact I forbid my family from shopping there. Awesome! Now tell that the rest of the country.

Take your kids to Disneyland, let them watch any Disney/Pixar movies:
Isn't Disney in FLORIDA? Uhm, no. Disney is, and always has been, a California thing. There is a Disney theme park in Florida, just like in France and Japan, but "Disneyland" is in Anaheim.

Still wouldn't go. Not into all that marketing BS. Good. I hate Disney. Growing up in Burbank and watching them screw with friends and family over the years has resulted in a ban of all blatent Disney items in the house.

Dont come here on vacations:
Been there on business, San Diego and Northern California not bad. I have to do yearly European Vacations, not by choice. So sorry I can't make it this year. For as many people who claim to hate the damn hippy state, there sure are tons of tourists here, making sure everyone knows they are from the South, where everything is better, where apperently hawking loogies and being a generally unpleasant drunk is totally acceptable.

Wiki

[Laurie] David has criticized drivers of Hummer vehicles for wasting fossil fuels by consuming fuel at the rate of 10 miles per gallon. However, she has been criticized [1] for flying on private jet aircraft, which generally operate at the rate of 1 or 2 miles per gallon and with a range upwards of 6000 miles.

On Nightline, she was asked about this: ". . . you fly Gulfstream jets; there are things in your life that waste energy as well." David responded, "First of all, I don't fly Gulfstream jets. I know people say that about me but I don't. I fly most of the year commercially and lots of people have seen me on American and United. I do fly private occasionally."

TRANSLATION: I am busted, but the brand name is different so maybe I can weasel out of it.

Craven. Freaking. Hypocrite.

It would be threadjacking to start pontificating about the global-warming thing, but the central subject is whether or not we give these self-righteous watermelon hippies too much, er, well, "power." Folks, it's not even within the realm of question anymore. They DO think they're better than everybody else, and why in the world shouldn't they. They tell us when to jump and how high and when to come back down again, and we do whatever they want and give'em money too.

I'm really amazed that so many, within the indignantly-independent don't-tell-me-what-to-do FARK user community, continue to fall for it.

You're right, you didn't actually state that conservatives are the only ones who are hypocrites when it comes to personal responsibility and I apologize. You also never showed that you think liberals are capable of the same hypocritical behavior. When I made a statement to that effect you responded with more anti-conservative rants rather than taking the opportunity to admit that both sides are screwed up. Well, it doesn't matter if you're a meathead right winger who thinks the answer to everything is more more more supply, a starry-eyed liberal who thinks whirlygigs and magnifying lens and french fry grease are the answer, or a nutty Kaptain Futurama who thinks perpetual-motion reactors and solar space rays are the answer. Because the biggest part of the answer (if there is one) is efficiency. The future belongs to the efficient, and that means clever design and conservation and a lot less Salad Shooters and big glass boxes cooled to 60F in the summer and empty parking lots bathed in bright light and boob tubes blaring into empty rooms.

The bacchanalia is over, boys, or soon will be. Soon it will be time to buck up and tighten your belts and do with less and that's just the way it is. You won't have a choice. Sorry.
