Google Video Link

I couldn't get the two previous video links to work, so figured I'd post this for other non-youtubers like myself.

My 2-year-old daughter loved her and the other night asked me "where's Melanie?" or "I want Melanie". And every night before that when she came on (not EVERY night, just whenever she happened to be watching it), she'd yell "Melanie!" when she saw her.

I personally thought she was annoying - not HER, but the stupid things they made her say and do.

I think maybe she knew it too and was trying to get terminated - if Sprout's owned by Comcast, she'll get decent severance pay. OR, maybe they were just looking for a reason to get rid of her and found it all of a sudden. Comcast likes to do that too.

Good for her.

This is totally stupid. Should Peter Pan never be shown again because Julie Andrews flashed her boobies in another movie?

Wow, I posted their email and the mods took it down.

Isn't writing emails in mass something normal on fark?

Maybe something else happened, I didn't read all the replys.

Nearly every single actor who contributes to childrens' television has also worked in more adult themes. I think it very hypocritical to sack Melanie because of this.

It's really backward in this day and age to fire a woman for this reason.

I hope that PBS can reconsider it's position and bring Melanie back to the Goodnight Show. I think the parents who approve of her far outnumber the parents who don't.

Talking about anal sex with toddlers? What would you expect from a liberal media station like PBS? It should have been taken off the air years ago.

Hey, moron, they were SEPERATE VIDEOS made YEARS PRIOR and she wasn't talking to TODDLERS. Read the damn article before making a statement as retarded as this.

Here's the response I got from PBS Kids:

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding PBS KIDS Sprout's decision to no longer have Melanie Martinez appear as the host of The Good Night Show. Ms. Martinez has been an important part of Sprout and we are saddened that this difficult decision had to be made.

Our foremost priority is maintaining the trust of the parents and families we serve. With this in mind, the management of Sprout determined that the short films in which Ms. Martinez appeared were inappropriate for her role as a preschool program host. We apologize for any disappointment that our decision has caused you and your family.

Sprout remains committed to The Good Night Show as a valuable tool for parents to help children wind down after a busy day. Plans are in development to launch a new season of the program with a new host in late 2006. In the meantime, regularly scheduled programs within The Good Night Show (e.g. Dragon Tales™, Bob The Builder™, Thomas & Friends™) will continue to air in their designated time slots with new short-form content replacing Ms. Martinez's segments.

Thank you again for your comments.

Sincerely,
Amelia

WIRELESS JOE.
That's almost exactly word-for-word what they have written on www.sproutletsgrow.com. They obviously don't give a shiat about what anyone thinks. Now they're stuck in a corner. They couldn't rehire her if they wanted to. They'd have to admit a mistake.

/Bob the Builder's new voice Ryan Stiles played celebrity poker. Is that the kind of role model we want for our kids?

okay last one, as a parent of someoen who watches it, i have to say i am disappointed. here is my reply to those who emailed me the stock answer, its not my best work but i am kind of disappointed at the network and the decision makers:

So what you are telling me according to this message, that as a parent and a viewer my opinion doesnt count. As a viewer of the show since the opening of the channel, i have to say this is one of the most hypocritical actions i have ever seen. You continue to air a program big sister lil brother, that encourages children to act like spoiled brats. You said in your response that you will continue to air Thomas the Tank Engine, yet fail to acknowledge the blatant sexism and two sided stance the network has taken. If you allow george carlin, the man who made a career out of the 7 words you cant say on tv or radio, to be the narrator of a popular children's show and still continue to air the repeats of the program. how can you stand on any leg when its obvious you have double standards?
I am utterly disappointed and will boycott the pbs sprout network from now on. i usually enjoy your programming and the dedication to the youth, but you obviously have no idea what you are talking about in regards to ms. martinez. How would a 2-5 yr old be affected by something that had been done prior to their birth? In that case lets just remove all the children's programs from the air, cuz the hosts have had sex, said a dirty word on camera, or whatever. Its not the act that i am questioning its the blatant double standard effectively enforced by your company. Hope others decide to boycott this channel until otherwise noted. You know its not only the religious right in this country that has a voice. I didnt say anything when you removed the buster show taht dealt with lesbians, i figured it was a battle that had already came and gone. but you are really losing what it is that pbs used to stand for . I guess that the angry militant parents will always win against your loylal viewers and contributors. the angry parents that only stand to boycott and have never even seen an episode. Guess you are making a decision for them, as a loyal viewer and contributor, you arent making the decision for me.

from a former viewer who wont let his son watch your station anymore,

PBS can not afford the new FCC fines. One fine and they are out of business, so they are bending over backward in order to not incur the wrath of the financial arm of the FCC.

There was a memo at PBS called,"Editing of Coarse Language/New Practices." Henceforth, producers would face two new requirements: (1) if a word is bleeped or wiped (silenced), the entirety of the word must be bleeped or wiped, meaning that "mother-F-word" would now have to be "bleep bleep," and (2) if the F-word or the S-word were uttered to camera so that viewers could recognize it from the speaker's mouth, the lips must be pixelated.

It sucks, but that's what it is.

Toddlers aren't supposed to watch tv anyhow.

Yeah, I'm most bothered by a detail from the Sprout statement: "Late last week, Melanie Martinez, host of The Good Night Show, alerted us to the Internet posting of an independent short film that she appeared in seven years ago." My emphasis added.

See, this part I don't get.

As most of the Fark perverts know, it's been on the internet a long time. Like at least since 2001 (which was about when I first saw it). Around continuously, even. The TechnicalVirgin.com website was hosted off the main site of the writer/producer. While the joke's site implies keeping it up wasn't worth the hassle, and the robots.txt keeps Google and such from mentioning it, both the Boys and Future movies are still on the main site and always (as far as I can tell) have been. Not to mention all of the other places that have downloaded and mirrored it with or without permission.

So, how was this an "alert" about it having been posted? About Ms. Martinez finally finding out it had been posted for an Internet epoch? About PBS finally finding out it had been posted? Or about either Ms. Martinez or PBS finding it had been recently posted to somewhere relatively prominent like YouTube?

In each of these scenarios, someone has been a major dumbass, beyond just the base stupidity of the prudish "justification" for firing Ms. Martinez.

On the other hand, what do I know? I don't have kids.

i agree with most of your post, the only thing i feel the need to comment on is the timing of the video and the revelation that the vid is out there.

someone mentioned earlier that the timing of it more resembled someone trying to blackmail ms. martinez into paying them or something in exchange for the tape or info aboot the link. so not saying you are wrong or they are right, it just seems more fitting in the current time frame and resulting backlash... i just hope something that makes all parties happy happens and everyone moves on amicably(sp)

This is the lame response I got:

We understand that you are disappointed with the recent changes to The Good Night Show, and we too are saddened that we had to make this difficult decision. Our foremost priority is to do what is best for our young viewers and those who love them, and we will continue to provide the quality programming you and your children have come to expect from PBS KIDS Sprout.

Thank you.

my response:
Did someone even read my letter? Thanks for taking the time to send me that lame form letter, but my questions still weren't answered.

2006-07-27 09:31:04 AM
A few people have wondered about the timing of this, since the videos were available here and there on the web for years now. I think I know why this came up now.

Very recently, the videos were linked to Melanie Martinez's wikipedia article. For about four days after that, various users tried to remove them, but they kept getting put back. The same day that people stopped trying to remove them coincides with the day "late last week" when MM told Sprout execs about the video, according to Sprout's note to parents. That is, I think that it was when the videos got linked to wikipedia that MM realized that they would come to the attention of a wider public than they had beforehand. At that point, she really had to tell execs about the videos.

I think the videos are funny and harmless, and that this is a shame. But if Sprout is anything like the government, then when they hired her, they may have asked her if there was anything in her past that could compromise her standing as a pre-school TV host, or if there was anything for which someone could blackmail her or something. The point is, IF they asked her this (I have no idea if they did) and she failed to disclose these videos, then she did make a mistake. The mistake wasn't doing the videos, it was lying. The point is, if she had disclosed the videos then, Sprout would have hired someone else to be the host of ths show, and now millions of toddlers wouldn't be wondering what happened to their friend.

Anyway, it's all speculation. But look at the history of the wikipedia article. I do think that that's what sparked this now. It would have come up somehow anyway, but it seems that wikipedia made it come up now.

OK, this is late, but some things come to mind: First, for those of you who think her career was going so well and she wouldn't have any reason to sabotage it, you must not have seen that ghastly Star they paired her up with recently (dayum, give me a scalpel, I'll give it a tonsillectomy myself if nobody else will do it!). That is one moronic character, and I'd have a hard time sticking out any contract if that was what I was required to work with. There are worse things in life to be than an out of work actress.

Second, I don't even really recognize Melanie's face in the video compared to her face now, so I really doubt my toddlers would make the connection *if* they were to see the "virgin" video, and they *won't* - geez. Now, George Carlin is doing a voiceover (his face never shows) on Sprout's Thomas so *naturally* there's no reason to pull *his* children's work secondary to his adult work (wink wink). However, Sesame Street has featured segments starring such famous *faces* as Jim Carey, Danny DeVito, Andrea Martin (how many times has Edith Prickly been on Sesame Street, and she was probably the most bawdy character on SCTV), and even Marlee Matlin (she drops the F-bomb in "What The Bleep Do We Know") whose language in their "adult" works include much coarser words than "anal sex," and I'd be willing to bet the chances are greater that those movies would be accidentally seen by more kids than Melanie's video. So gimme a break, PBS Sprout. What really happened?

I wonder if Melanie realized that Star was taking over anyway and she didn't want to share the screen with that annoying crappy character, so rather than go out slowly this video expedited the process. Yes, it was bumpy, but as mentioned earlier it sure did generate more publicity than simply fading away. Either way, she probably wins.

PS - Y'all can stop blanket blaming conservatives - I'm a conservative Catholic independent pro-life biker-chick-gonnabe equity feminist (enough labels for ya?) and I think this was a stupid decision. I've emailed my letter already, no answer for me yet; maybe they're getting too swamped to keep up. I did google her name and the word "petition" and found places that have started those too. I doubt it'll work; I saw HIT/NickJr's Oswald the Octopus come and go and his following was humongous, yet he's still no longer in production (but at least we have him in reruns). By the way, the kids will survive and move on. But it still sucks.
