I work for a Canadian political party, manning the general phone line, and I am getting lots and lots of phone calls from (mostly elderly) people saying 'You know, everyone coming from OVER THERE do not even have a Canadian Passport, and we have the elderly here with a very bad pension, and hospitals with long waiting lists, and this and that' - When asked about their suggestions on how to deal with the problem, most people say that we should all leave them over there. To quote George Burns, 'Too bad that the people with the best ideas on how to run the country are too busy driving a taxi and cutting hair', or something to that effect.

I've met some Canadian sailors. Fine people.

While I was stationed in Yokosuka, I stood gate guard with one of them (we were on the same pier). Unfortunately, another guy from my ship was on watch with us, and he wasn't the brightest of people. He actually asked the Canadian, "You guys are owned by Britain, right?"

In our nation's defense, the guy asking the question was actually from (no shiat) Cambodia. But I was embarassed anyway. Canadian guy took it in good stride, though.

I RTFA, but it seems cornfusing that Canada has already evac'd 6,000 folks, yet this article says that 3 warships only capable of ferrying 865 people are 'on standby'. Ready to head over in a two week trip.

Maybe its just me, but ifn' ya already got something in the region towing thousands of people out, then the need for half the Canadian warships setting sail seems kind of un-newsworthy.

I wonder what they are hauling citizens of the GWN out of Lebanon on....is there some kind of UHAUL equivalent on the high seas?

2006-07-24 08:04:57 PM
Well said b_w_friend.

It's not going to take 2 weeks. They can be over there in a week.

I believe the proper response, then, is "so...you guys have been owned by EVERYONE, right?"

We're Canadians. The proper response is to not give worry that people don't know shiat about us and, like the navy guy, take it in stride. Much better than "Know me, biatch!" or "Love me, asshole!"

As for people biatching about the Canadians coming back home, well fark them. Canadians are Canadians regardless of where they live, and we have a duty to protect all of our people.

And when the people back home complaining about hospital waits and pensions have bombs dropping arond them, then they can have some sympathy. When we can use those ships to help them in some way, then they can raise a fuss. Until then, we have people caught in a war, and rescuing them is a priority.

There were around 50,000 canadians citizens to start off with in Lebanon.
6000 are out in 13 days...
At that rate when the ships get there, some canadians could be there if they are not killed by the Israelis first.
Of course I say that because Israel has already killed some Canadian children.

Yeah, because Florida and Lebanon are totally the same thing. Sorry, but I don't feel too bad for Westerners hanging out in Lebanon of all places.

And before anyone starts on this "Americans never go outside of America" crap, let me add that I'm an American that is going to have to get pages added to his passport. I've been all over. Hell, I went to Egypt while the company I was doing work for issued a warning to their own employees. I took the risk and wouldn't have cried about getting caught there (even though its safer than Lebanon)

I was in Scotland in 1998 when the African Embassy got bombed. All the Americans lost their shiat, and the state department wanted us to check in with local embassies (the closest being London at the time, so that was NOT on the menu). Like a day later there was a bomb scare on the Royal Mile, which didn't help things. In 1999 I was over there again when the Lockerbie bombers went on trial. I didn't get nearly as much shiat at the airport in Glasgow as I get in the US now - and THAT airport was under a direct threat.

You can't get away from it. So you just roll, baby, roll.

i found it interesting that after the tsunami the canadians wanted to help immediately but couldn't because their military was downsized so much they had no assets in the area and no long range air assets to even send supplies.
the us has a carrier battle group and an amphib group near by plus long range cargo planes to provide immediate relief.

a strong military isn't always for fighting.

Eazydog:

I would say that that list pretty much covers the naval needs we have as set by our foreign policy.

The fact of the matter is we don't do practice that much aggression in our foreign policy so we really don't have to have a large peace time military. Generally all we do militarily peace-keeping, so the Navy is at best used in a support role anyhow. You can't keep the peace if you're shelling the area you're occupying from offshore.

Now if we were constantly on the offensive, yeah, we'd need a much larger Navy.

Or we could just ship them to the US in containers marked "Canadian Lumber you guys got as a deal. Oh noes, we were pwned!!!!1!1"

Then once they reach the destination the timer goes off and boom... instant capitalism seeking bomb.

Seriously though. If your foreign policy tends to leave well enough alone, you don't need a very large military. Especially if you're part of NATO, as we are. That's the beauty of NATO actually, is that you can spend money on your population as opposed to maintaining a huge standing army for no good reason.
