If you want a language that never changes, study Latin.

English is a living language. New words are constantly being added and old words are constantly falling out of usage. The way words are used and standards of punctuation are changing as well.

Trying to "preserve" a living language is akin to killing it.

While you have a point, kids who can't form complete sentences because MSN has turned their brains to goo are also not doing the language any favors.

Not true.

I don't disagree with nothing you haven't said clearly and could care less about nothing that never bothers me as this stuff that I can't stand never.

I don't think these people are standing in the way of the evolution of the language. They've just got a pickle up their butts about careless writing.

Writing "OMG KTHX BYE!" is not evolution of the language. It's just stupid.

2006-07-24 02:46:40 PM
From the Article-

I am persuaded that once we stopped diagramming sentences, there have been more errors.

Oooh, time to take yourself behind the woodshed, lady!!

2006-07-24 02:47:06 PM
SPELL provides something called "goof cards." They're cute and polite and have a little cartoon on them. I stopped using those when I got repetitive stress. I send e-mails, and I try always to explain what the error is, not just to be snippy and say, "Hey, jerk, got this wrong." That's one thing you can't do when you're speaking for an organization. You have to be courteous."

A life.
Get one.

People don't read anymore. If they do read, it's some crap like 'Da Vinci Code' or the latest political screed.

The easiest way to keep your head working and your writing and speaking skills up to par is to read. Both fiction and non-fiction, poetry is always optional, and Shakespeare doesn't get good until you're way out of HS.

Think about your buddies who don't read. How are conversations with them?

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."
- James D. Nicoll

"English is the result of Norman men-at-arms attempting to pick up Saxon barmaids and is no more legitimate than any of the other results."
- H. Beam Piper

Couldn't have said it better myself.

2006-07-24 02:49:27 PM
I'm still trying to figure out why my seventh grade English teacher made us memorize all of the prepositions. I'm sure that really helped with my writing skills. Waste...of...time. I still remember most of them in alphabetical order. I think that's just sick and wrong.

2006-07-24 02:49:34 PM
"I am persuaded that once we stopped diagramming sentences, there have been more errors."

I'm going to look dumb when I get shot out of the water on this one, but is the above sentence in fact grammatically sound? I suppose it must be, considering the source, but it nonetheless strikes me as disjointed.

2006-07-24 02:50:54 PM
Equivalence once again rears it's pin-head.

A few words evolve within the language proving that the language is fluid and therefore EVERY possible bastardizaton is totally acceptable!

2006-07-24 02:51:03 PM
From TFA: I mean more errors everywhere, whether it's the airplane, the space shuttle or the operating room.

OMG, poor grammar blew up the shuttle!

2006-07-24 02:51:30 PM
While I agree that diagramming sentences is ridiculous and the only time I encountered it was in college (when our prof showed us how stupid it was and how glad she was they had done away with it), grammar is a lost art.

More often than not, I can tell you something is wrong, though I can't always tell you why.

2006-07-24 02:51:47 PM

Technically it's correct, but it's in passive voice, which is a big no-no.

I always had a problem with grammer. Who defines what is proper grammer? I mean is there a board or something. If there is no official organization that regulates or controls it, who is to say what is proper. Grammer changes, 200 years ago people were supposed to Capitalize any very import words in a sentence and not just proper nouns or whatever.

Aint is a word because people know what it means. Otherwise internet would not be a word, or dumbass or whatever.

Of course, I dont believe you should sound like a dumbass, just saying how can something be wrong if there is no official rulebook. If there is and its from england, then dont we spell color wrong? Does she correct people on how to spell color?

"but is the above sentence in fact grammatically sound?"

good point.

it should read:

I am, once we stopped diagramming, am persuaded that, sentences, more errors have been there.

Ohhh, and forget everything they teach you in Lit. and HS English. It's mostly crap. Dickens isn't that great, and Shirley Jackson is great. Western Civ. usually has the best leads for reading material.

Good eye!

I also think that "errors" should somehow be the subject of the sentence. It would sound better.

Someone (subject) should tell (verb) this lady (object) to suck it.

2006-07-24 03:00:51 PM
I am convinced that once we stop diagramming sentance, a very annoying portion of the population will lose its favorite pasttime.

/They will be forced to find another hobby that fullfills their desire to be elitist

Holy crap... what is wrong with SPELL?

My entire psychology class wants English to be the designated language for the US - but they don't want to have to learn the rules that go along with the language. They just want it to say in our constitution somewhere, "English only, no Spanish speakers allowed."

This is NOT scary. Americans who pretend to be so proud of their native tongue should put forth a little freaking effort to speak it properly! And if not, then shut up about how much you just love this country and want to see it remain English-speaking and white.

Hypocrites.

2006-07-24 03:07:57 PM
I only learned within the last year that they stopped teaching rules of grammar in the '60s. They taught people what to say but not why. No wonder why people make so many mistakes. They can't go back in their minds and say, "This is transitive, this is intransitive." It's the "lie, lay" thing.

When I need a good lay, I lie.
