So, he's 13 years old with the mind of a 3-year-old, and we're calling him 'developmentally delayed'?

So, when he's 23, will he have the mind of a 13-year-old?

I think that 'developmentally denied' might be a better term.

taintedvision - Even still the sign should not have been taken down by the police.

Actually, the follow-up story said they took it down voluntarily after speaking with the Police Chief.

"Kallie and Darren Galbraith did not immediately return calls seeking comment about their sign or why they took it down. But Chad Bowles, chief of Nephi City's police department, said they took it down after he visited their home Friday evening.

'We talked to them I think they understood by using that type of wording they made a mistake,' he said. 'It's so degrading and it ridicules the family.'"

I'm sure some would say "yeah... 'talked to'," but sometimes that's really all it takes. And, considering the attention this was getting, I doubt the police would have taken it down or forced the family to.

I know in my town, we've had several jackasses over the years with some obnoxious sign or display in their yards or on their cars or something... I can't really remember the police ever taking them down by force. I'm sure a lot of times they wish they could, but I don't think anyone wants to get caught on the wrong side of a "trampling free speech" accusation.

Flaccidor: Fraser Nelson, Executive Director, Disability Law Center: "Regardless of cognitive disability I may have, I'm a person and people do not deserve to have signs pointed at them, making fun of them, scaring them, harassing them."

Oh, WAAAAH!!! If you use that logic, the people in that neighborhood shouldn't have that retard harassing them by going into their houses and eating their food/going through their stuff, and that guy's daughter shouldn't be assaulted by the aforementioned retard. But I guess since the retard isn't "normal" it can just do whatever it wants and nothing should be done. If that retard walked into MY house, I guarantee it would be the first and LAST time it would EVER happen. I don't have kids because I don't like them and I don't want the responsibility for dealing with them, so why does that stupid mother think she should allow her retard to wander the streets and make other people deal with it because she's too lazy/stupid/ignorant to take care of it? And I would be willing to bet that if the kid got hurt in a house that it had no business being in, the stupid-ass mother would sue the homeowner for failing to protect and adequately supervise her little accident. Hey, YOU had the kid, YOU deal with it. It is nobody's problem or responsibility but hers, and if she cannot adequately care for it or supervise it, then it should be placed somewhere with people who can. This guy was just trying to deal with the situation. He had to take drastic measures because it seems that the lazy-ass white trash mother couldn't be bothered to control her kid, so I don't blame the guy. He probably could've handled it better, but it's not like the retard can read, so how would it know what the sign said? Even if it could read, it probably wouldn't be able to comprehend the meaning of the word "retard" anyways, so who cares? Just because the kid is retarded doesn't mean it shouldn't be able to learn proper behavior, and even if it can't, then the mother should supervise it more closely. Stupid biatch, personal responsibility is dead in the United States. How very, very sad.

/directed at the guy who made the quote, not the person who posted it, just so nobody biatches me out for my lack of comprehension :)

Tom Brownlee, Advocate for those with Disabilities: "I hate that word, it was very offensive and I just want them to see that people with disabilities deserve the respect that they are entitled to."

If someone is throwing rocks at my daughter, he doesn't DESERVE my respect.

Respect is earned. No one is entitled to it. After reading the article, it sounds like the family that put up the sign just couldn't get the issues resolved by either talking to the family or the police. Putting up the sign may have been their only recourse.

I can easily imagine how it might have happened.
Boy throws rocks at the daughter. Parents visit the family of the boy. Mom argues that the boy isn't at fault because he's "just slow". Girl's parents can't get them to do anything, so they go to the police. Police won't charge the boy for unknown reason, although they should have at least filled out a police report.

Being slow is not an acceptable reason for violence to others. If the kid can't be prevented from wandering onto other people's property or kept from throwing rocks, he needs to be institutionalized. His own mother said he was more like a three year old. He shouldn't be wandering alone.

I like to imagine than 20 years from now, we'll have a medical cure for mental retardation.

Actually, I like to imagine that we'll completely understand the brain, and we'll all have a 300 IQ or better.

It's interesting to see how this thread has spread.

It seems to contain 5 types of posts now:
1) the people that put up the sign are retards.
2) the people that put up the sign did what they had to do, or should have physically attacked the retarded child instead.
3) the family of the retarded child as well as the police are fully at fault.
4) everyone in that city is retarded.
5) bush is retarded.

Did I miss anything. It's sort of strange how a few people insist on bringing up bush here as well. They are that focused on hating him, I guess. I wonder if they bring up Bush in every day topics too.

Meeting a friend.
Good morning, Bush sucks.
Pardon?

On the train:
Tickets please.
Here you go sir, btw did you know Bush sucks?
Excuse me?

At the 7-11:
Yes, I'd like to one douhnut, a quickpick lottery ticket, and Bush sucks.
Um, that will be $1.67 sir.

In a meeting with the boss:
Joe, you aren't getting your work done. You're continually late with all assignments, and half of them seem to have odd political rants embedded randomly throughout.
Boss, it's not my fault Bush sucks!

Please, get a grip.

Therefore, I don't think they ought to have any "human rights".

Instead of being someone who is mentally retarded, you are a person with a developmental disability and that means really what we are valuing is the person.

That's a retarded sentence

Well, it's only natural that a reader would mentally cross-reference other remarkably stupid people when viewing a story about a "retard." At least the retard in this story didn't try to feel up the Chancellor of Germany at an important political meeting...

This is how it could have gone down... in my utopia:

knock, knock.... "Hi, I saw the sign you put up, and I want to apologize for the other day when my boy threw rocks at your girl, I've just been distracted lately, and I realize now I need to keep a better watch over him. It won't happen again. Is there anyway you would consider removing the sign because I'm really kind of embarrased to have my lack of parenting brought into the spotlight."

"oh, uh, yeah. Good, ok, I'll take it down, you know, we were just getting worried because he's running in the streets, and into peoples houses. He could get a hold of someone's gun on accident, or something, so we thought the sign might turn up the heat on you. Sorry to have to do that but..."

"Oh, no worries. It's all good. Tea?"

"You have Coors?"

"Coors light."

"Sounds Good."

But no, that would have been too easy. Much better to waste the time of police, reporters, and my farking ass that read all this shiate.

Gee, a retarded kid acting out violently in public. Never saw such a thing... well, since the time that family brought their drooler into a restaurant I was in, and he began smashing glasses, sending wine all over the people at adjacent tables, then began screaming at the top of his lungs until six people had to wrestle him outside. But that was only like the 20th or 30th time I've seen anything like that. Ah, for the days when families kept them chained in the cellar...

/not trolling
//really feel this way
///if i did that shiat i'd be locked up
////flame away.

You'd think these people would be used to being around people who are mentally disadvantaged. They do live in Utah, after all. The huge amount of inbreeding (albeit non-direct) that goes on here makes for a large portion of the population having some sort of mental challenges. On a lighter note, this guy probably goes to the bar I work at. If I see him, the guys and I have a "special" door that goes out back where we handle this kind of miscreant. I'll take pictures.

2006-07-23 02:09:22 PM
The sad truth is that at 13 he has hormones coming online and with no real discipline, whether that is his parents fault or because he is so developmentally deficient (how's that for a PC term) that he is unable to have discipline, I would guess that there is incarceration in his near term future at a state mental institution when he goes from throwing rocks at girls to doing things a little more up close and personal. Either that or there will be an encounter with a 12 gauge shotgun. Then it'll be "Too bad about that kid but he shouldn't have tried to rape that nine year old neighbor kid." The sad thing is that nobody including CPS is going to put his mother in jail for child endangerment and him in an institution before it happens. And after it happens and he's dead they still won't put his mother in jail which is where she belongs right now.

so... do we know for sure the daughter that got hit by a rock didn't provoke the kid? i mean, with such sensitive parents, how do we know this golden child wasn't standing in front of the retarded kid calling him names and generally being a shiat and confusing the boy at which point he picked up a rock and made her stop?

but yeah, some supervision all around would help things.

As annoying as the white trash point and shout is people who insist on smoking a cigarette while talking to the po-lice
See, maybe you don't understand this... but many people get nervous around the police in this nation, even when they don't have a reason to be.

I just had to bring this up... in back to back posts, you said:
I like to imagine than 20 years from now, we'll have a medical cure for mental retardation. Actually, I like to imagine that we'll completely understand the brain, and we'll all have a 300 IQ or better.
and
t's sort of strange how a few people insist on bringing up bush here as well

The article's about a retarded kid and a bunch of stupid rednecks. ...Why would someone bring Bush up...
And I thought the above was funny because, with Bush and people like him in the White House, less is going to be done in the coming years in the way of public medical science.

2006-07-24 12:18:13 PM
If I see him, the guys and I have a "special" door that goes out back where we handle this kind of miscreant.
Well, that's disgusting.

how do we know this golden child wasn't standing in front of the retarded kid calling him names and generally being a shiat and confusing the boy at which point he picked up a rock and made her stop?
Shouldn't matter.
Oh, that's right, if you aren't "all there", it's perfectly okay to be violent and to run around without any control. Welcome to the world of today!
(oddly enough, last night's episode of King of the Hill covered how well parents of today tend to parent...)

I wonder if this will eventually go down a slippery slope, where all murderers and people who commit heinous crimes will get off because they're farking nuts.

2006-07-24 01:20:24 PM
The little retard needs to be taken from his parents and placed somewhere where he will receive proper supervision.

And yes, I call them "retards" because that's what they are. Stick your political correctness where the sun doesn't shine.
