The radioactive waste containers for trains generally are very solid, designed to withstand high speed collision, so I would suspect that any explosive device that can be carried wouldn't rupture it. As far as I see, we only have the reporters assumption that it could, but no expert statement to back that.

From what I've seen, the people who oppose transporting nuclear waste will never, ever be satisfied with either the containers or the means of transport no matter how small the possibility of rupture or leakage. Even if the containers were so strong and well designed that the risk of leakage was (say) 0.00000000000000000001% they'd be moaning and crying over that as if the world were about to end.

How big was this "bomb"? The storage casks for nuclear (or nucular if you prefer) waste in the US are TOUGH. Unless this guy was packing a 5 ton truck full of fake high explosives this doesn't warrant the hysteria he was trying to generate.

And since when do reporters go around trying to create news in the UK? In the US, sure, US news is nothing but info-tainment. But Great Britain? Tsk tsk.

The high volume lines in the UK are really good, if expensive. The backwater and medium volume lines can be somewhat unreliable timewise, but are fairly cheap. I dont really have all that much problem with the trains over here.

Would also agree in general its unlikely a home made device would have any serious effect on these containers in most cases, you might derail the car, and with a well designed explosive charge you might be able to penetrate the container and cause a leak (which would be expensive to clean up, but not very dangerous unless the explosives were rigged to explode while the car was on a bridge over a river which seems very unlikely unless manually controlled), but the payback in damage is miniscule for the effort put in, compared to much more easily planned and executed attacks against civilians and infrastructure.

US nuclear waste vessels are well armored MF's, I don't think knocking them into a river would do that much. You could bust one, but you'd need a big shaped charge correctly placed, and the puncture wouldn't be huge. Easier to kill civilians directly.

Ahh...you're going after the wrong target. Of COURSE the actual containers are too tough. So you take out something easier.
Consider the entire I'm sure you could think of something on a moving train carrying nuclear containers that would be easier to cause major damage to, and cause massive problems.

Haven't heard of GPS have we. It would be a factor of the cost and the risk out weighing the reward. You would need a GPS, a program to trip it when it's over the bridge, and likely a shaped charge to puncture the transport container, then you need to plant it, with the GPS antenna in a visible to the sky position (I suppose a bluetooth GPS could be used), and hope that you don't get caught planting it, or that inspectors don't find it later on.

Was the reported white? Just anecdotal evidence but if anyone actually saw the employees actually appearing to work on the NYC subway everyone would know something is up.
