Take the $500+ Billion being wasted in Iraq and help subsidize the oil industry's transformation to solar, wind and geothermal. Make it law.

Sorry, submitter, but the problem cannot be solved in a witty five word sentence.

No drive sundays sounds like a liberal media conspiracy to get people to stop going to church!

The answers are obvious... which makes it even sadder that we (as a people) can't get behind the simple idea of conserving energy.

I'm imagining little cars driving around with 100 foot tall 2 ton wind turbines attached to the hoods.. and geothermal cars filled with smoke parked along the side of the roads with blackened crispy people inside.

Shoot RPG's at random cars on freeways through out the US. Start the RPG fest on I-25 in Colorado somewhere between mile marker 101 and mile marker 220. Cars, trucks and busses with 4 or more people in them can not be attacked.

Wear more sweaters and wooly socks...keep warm and stop biatching about the cold.

Fell, chainsaw, etc., your own wood (TREES, you sick farkers), then chop it yourself. It's what we do. And we live where -50 F isn't unusual.

We could put generators on our brakes and store the energy in a battery (weight) and get paid to unload the energy at gas stations.

The batteries would probably weight too much to make this worth while.

to speed up global warming, congress enacts mandatory tire fire legislation. every residential dwelling must have a used-tire fire burning at all times. the goal is that we melt some glaciers, the ocean levels rise, we flood the country, and everyone catches a ride on the back of a friendly sea turtle. they justify this legislation under their commerce clause authority. they're simply opening up the channels of interstate commerce once and for all.

it can't fail.

justbob2000: solar, wind and geothermal. Make it law.

Solar power is about 2/3 of a horsepower per square meter. At noon. At the equator. With no clouds. Multiply by the cosine of the latitude and the cosine of the time of day otherwise. Subtract the percentage of sunlight reflected by the clouds. Multiply by the efficiency of the conversion method. Short answer--you need a football field to equal a Toyota Corolla.

Wind power comes from solar power--same story. It takes too much room to generate the necessary power.

Geothermal. Nice in Iceland, where you are sitting on lava. Elsewhere, not so good.

Try nuclear. Fast breeder reactors. Turn the U238 into P239. Fission it. Break up all the transuranics into short half-life light isotopes. Build a big surplus and then you can start thinking about hydrogen for transportation power.

In the dark ages of technology we were able to find a way to split the atom. Give scientists a blank check, secret location, and call it the Houston Project.

Seed the world's oilfields with high-level radioactive waste, rendering them unuseable. You can bet we'd have this solved a week later.

California, Oregon and Washington all have active lava domes. Geothermal does not need to be 2 feet from the lava to work. A hole drilled 100s of feet deep works just fine.

Make TV and radio advertising of cars illegal for a start, just like cigarettes.
Outright ban the 100 watt lightbulb.
Ban ghost load devices that do not turn themselves off after finising a charge cycle.
Mandate solar cell roofs in hot sunny areas of the country to offset air conditioning load on the grid in those areas with guaranteed electric bill reductions for participants.
Recycle trash expressly for methane production.

Those were my hours for about a year. Three day weekends were the shiat. Now, it's like 7-12s. G*d damnit I hate those hours. Luckily I get paid OT, but still...

BTW, I'm in the oil industry.

I just bought a diesel truck a couple months ago...that's my truck..100% biodiesel. I decided and made it happen.

You have NO idea how good it feels when I fill up on B99. I'm buying my transportation energy from American Farmers. Now I'm working on my house energy needs.

Seriously..it's a euphoric feeling.

I say we dust off Project Orion and build a car powered by nuclear pulse propulsion. It would offer both high acceleration and high specific impulse and would eliminate any tailgaters

If its a diesel...absolutely! The german diesels take alittle modification but American diesels since 1994 you can just switch. And after 3 or 4 tank fulls, you need to swap out the fuel filter because biodiesel is an abrasive fuel and it cleans the whole system. It also extends the life of the engine 3 fold and silences the "diesel knock". I'll put a million miles on that truck...it's an 03 F250. It runs smooth and quiet. I'll never go back.

You may want to talk to cyberluddite, he runs a Mercedes on SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil). There is a difference, SVO needs to be chemically changed into BioDiesel to run on straight diesels.

Absolutely no price difference. Just where your money goes is all.

Right now it is more...3.29 a gal in this market. However, I'm building a processor to turn WVO (waste vegetable oil) into biodiesel and I'll drop to about 70 cents a gallon. Even though it's 30 cents a gallon or so more commercially...I still can't iterate enough how good it feels. It's worth it to me.

Yep..whatever in your market, it's close to normal dino-diesel. As I have said, the only thing left is the decision.

Just google "biodiesel" fella's and learn up. It really is too easy to just switch.

Wave energy looks promising. And if they can ever make the materials cheap enough we could power our homes with a big tube in the ground and a Stirling engine to generate the electricity.

Then again I live 60 miles away from the US's biggest nuclear plant, so I'm fine with fission too.

Properly insulate your friggin house, and learn to live at temperatures other than 72°.

No one thing is going to be a magic bullet. But small adjustments to your lifestyle (buying a nice sweater, riding a bike for local area stuff) can drastically reduce your consumption and your bills. Do you really need a computer with a 22" CRT and a 400W power supply?

(Don't be a bagina and whine that you can't use a bike in winter. I ride year-round in Albany, NY. Yes, you friggin can and it's actually enjoyable. STFU & GRYB [Go Ride Your Bike].)

Also, I wish the NRC would allow us to reprocess nuclear fuel so we could run it through again. But I digress.

Do you really need a computer with a 22" CRT and a 400W power supply?

Yes, yes I do. If I want to play the latest and greatest games, I need that much of a PSU, and I've yet to switch to and LCD because I'm not gonna junk a perfectly good CRT and spend more money. I'm creating less trash.

federally outlaw the supression of energy technology by private/commercial enterprise. also, financially reward citizens that blow the whistle on any company not following that law. yes, it would be nice if the federal government had to share everything, too, but national security would trump everything else... so all that stuff that the oil companies have supposedly bought from private inventors and locked away....

I cannot stand anything about you or your politics, GaryPDX... cept this. Good job. I think it's awesome to see someone taking action rather than just talking/complaining-- so props.

I personally use a bicycle and a motorcycle for about 80% of my driving. The rest in a small four banger pick-up (mostly for groceries and hockey practice).

Free sex for people who use the bus. It would be a double decker, when it's your turn you go upstairs where there's a bed and a couple of women. The slogan would be "Get on and get off"

the 22" crt, certinly dont need it. im perfectly happy with my 20" LCD. as for the 400watt PSU, im running a 480Watt and certinly wouldnt go any lower. some of the new systems comeing out are requireing ~600watt + PSU's
