Considering his smoke detector squirted acid in his eye, I would say this is one person who actually deserves a settlement.

I can't tell if he opened up the battery and the acid got him or if he just has no grasp of how to tell a story in cronological order

Incompatible batteries can cause the alarm to chirp, explode or sound when no fire is present, prompting homeowners to turn them off.

For some reason, the tought of an exploding fire detector makes me laugh.

Real Shaman

Newer hard wired detectors do have batteries as a backup.

I just did some remodeling, and by local code I was required to put a hardwired detector in every bedroom, and outside of the bedroom on all three levels. All have batteries. $700 I hadn't counted on. (Didn't have to put one in the room that was remodeled)

What they don't have is any sort of acid, AFAIK

Funniest headline I've seen in a while. Submitter made my day.

2006-07-19 03:23:52 PM
Even hard wired smoke detectors still have a battery backup in them, so that when they randomly go off in the middle of the night they keep going off after you shut off the circuit and pull them off the ceiling. And they have a capacitor in them so even after taking out the battery they keep going for another couple beeps.

The condo I rented had a smoke detector that chirped and made little exploding noises.

Turns out when I opened it that the battery was exploding in there...battery acid everywhere.

To think that my eye might have gotten squirtted into...

Ahh, any decent one has a battery backup. that way you're still protected if there's and electrical fire, and that circuit trips.

"First Alert acknowledged the malfunctioning models are only compatible with Eveready or Energizer batteries."

Umm they say that on the package, was it a big secret to reporters or something? Usually Duracell is listed. That is often what they come with.

Buy good batteries and change em every year. Ain't that hard.

I once had a piece of my intestine die. It was excrutiating - I passed out from the pain long before they decided they could give me painkillers in the ER. The people who drove me to the hospital thought I was giving birth - they were very puzzled I'm sure.

After that, trust me I have no desire to give birth. Pain is bad.

Some of the cheaper batteries can leak or even explode if accidentally charged. It sounds like this smoke alarm backfed 9VDC into the battery and caused it to swell and leak electrolytes all over this poor guy.

adenosine: Battery acid... in a 9 volt battery?

You're correct that alkaline dry cells don't have acid in them. As the name implies their electrolyte is alkaline, usually Potassium Hydroxide if I recall correctly; still not fun to get in your eye. It's probably just sloppy reporting.

blacksun: Only everyready and energizer 9V batteries are compatible? Sounds fishy to me... Whats the difference between these and others?

Maybe the cheaper brands internal resistance is too high to work properly, causing overheating when larger currents are being demanded; like when the speaker is powered. I could see this being an issue with cheapo 9V batteries because that form factor isn't really all that good to at providing high peak current to begin with. Internally this type of batteries already small plate area is split amongst 6 cells to get the total voltage up to 9V. Just this EEs wild guess.

I'd stay away from the 'happy lucky brand' batteries from the dollar store if were my smoke detector just to be on the safe side, it's not worth worrying about asploding and burning batteries to save a few bucks.

sound advice, but the 'happy lucky brand' fish product in a can is delightful; and a bargan at 5/$1.

Sounds like the equivalent of calling pencil graphite "lead."

Extreme base can actually be worse than extreme acid in many cases.... acid will just protonate and destroy your exterior layer of skin.Bases, like any strong hydroxide, tend to penatrate into your skin and soaponify your interior flesh, which is not fun.
I'm not sure how the eye would handle extreme base, other than have the cells dissolve and die.

Only everyready and energizer 9V batteries are compatible? Sounds fishy to me... Whats the difference between these and others

Everyready and Energizer are manufactured by the same company...it does seem kind of fishy that the two brands of batteries the manufacturs says are compatable are made by the same company.

However, from the manual for a First Alert smoke detector:

Choosing a replacement battery:
Your Smoke Alarm requires one standard 9V battery. The following batteries
are acceptable as replacements: Duracell #MN1604, (Ultra) #MX1604;
Eveready (Energizer) #522. You may also use a Lithium battery like the
Ultralife U9VL-J for longer service life between battery changes.

The reason they suggest Duracell and Energizer batteries is that the cheaper, non- alkaline batteries out there (most of the cheap chinese ones, as well as Eveready "heavy duty" batteries (the ones with the electrified cat on them) will leak or explode if back- charged. And, as the one guy said, they have high internal resistance. The smoke detector company specifically says "Energizer" or "Duracell." Any decent- quality ALKALINE battery is probably okay.
