2002-06-22 12:32:45 PM
no more goals for Papa Bouba Diop

2002-06-22 12:33:03 PM
Dang. I was hoping for Senegal to win. Then John Candy can take them all the way to the big game.

2002-06-22 12:33:05 PM
Great game.

2002-06-22 12:34:10 PM
What a Shiitty artcile!!!

Senegal should have won that game

Ummm...Turkey...are they good guys or bad guys??

World Cup = World Crock.

Total fix all the way around. These refs are so inept/corruptable it's not even funny. Anyone that lends any credence to these games is grossly naive.

This whole 'South Koren juggernaut' for example. It's South Korea people, not exactly a soccer powerhouse. Suddenly, they are miraculously anhiliating opponents right and left. Oooooooo......jeez. And where are we playing these charades....er...I mean, games? Yes, uh huh, Korea.

Read between the lines people, this is political from the get go. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a lunch date with Art Bell.

Turkey aren't good guys or bad guys. I wanted Senegal to win though, it would have been way cooler. Who doesn't cheer for a team that missed the chance to qualify for the World Cup in 1994 because they forgot to send in their application form to FIFA?

2002-06-22 12:42:41 PM
Hmmm...I was certain Turkey was either good guys or bad guys. Are they at war with anyone? Do they worship a god who hates me? My guidebook just suggests staying out of their prisons....

2002-06-22 12:47:42 PM
I'm not sure if I should root for Turkey or not. On one hand their skin is darker than ours. But on the other hand they seem to be fighting against the Axis of Evil. Can someone help me out?

Turkey aren't good guys or bad guys.

You are thinking of Switzerland.

2002-06-22 12:52:51 PM
Turkey massacred 1 million Armenians around the end of the First World War, I think. But I don't know if that affects how good or bad they are now.

Bah! I was rooting for Senegal. Damn!

Also, what kind of racist shiat is that? "On one hand their skin is darker than ours..."

Jeez. Fark, home of the trolls. (I hope, otherwise it's home of the KKK).

2002-06-22 12:56:30 PM
Mex...in context, I took the statement as sarcasm...

ask the kurds in eastern turkey, if there are any left still...

anyway, they are insanely nationalistic (they see themselves as nearly perfect), very high (unwarranted) pride about their history, government, and nation, but besides that, they are pretty ok to hang around with (in daily life), just don't bring up religion (unless you are a muslim like they are).

My little brother spent a few years in Turkey (US army). He got into a fight in a bar after he crossed his legs or something...showing the bottom of your foot is an insult, I think. Other than that, he didn't mind being there.

2002-06-22 01:04:14 PM
Could someone please explain the "Hero" tag on this? I'm confused.

2002-06-22 01:07:52 PM
I know nothing about either country, other then I do know for a fact that turks are filthy.

Dang. I wanted senegal to win.

2002-06-22 01:15:36 PM
At least Senegal beat the French.

It is true that in some countries that the average daily shower rate is less than 1, but I thank them for it. The reason is, that taking too many showers cant be all that great for the environment, imagine if all the rest of the world (besides US, where I am) took 2 showers a day (instead of 1, or 1 every two or more days), 100 million extra showers means that much more soap and shampoo introduced into the worlds rivers and oceans. I guess the sewer treatment facilities help, but I dont think that water is that health for the water life either. Anyway, a thanks to anyone (that is too far to smell from where I am) that takes few showers, so that I can take one a day (2 if I have a date).

2002-06-22 01:20:38 PM
Hero? Crush the africans and your a hero now? Jesse Jackson would be pretty unhappy with this tag...
Anyways, I wanted Senegal to win, they have been looking good. That and I always go for the underdogs.

2002-06-22 01:24:55 PM
Cheshire_cat_sf, was that a real, live, mouse? If so, it's pretty cool that you were able to take a picture right on the spot. Or was it that, the mouse was dead, or nearly dead, when the cat took a break from playing with it?

2002-06-22 01:53:43 PM
how is Montserrat doing? Are they still in it?

Are there any Farkers that live in Turkey?

Sounds a little familiar (except the muslim part)... but anyway..

Turkey seemed to play a more disciplined game, Senegal were relying on their speed and wild shots on goal to get them through, and it's worked up until now. But Turkey's ball handling ability was visibly better, and if it wasn't for that fool striker who was afraid of the ball during the first half they'd have probably won in regulation time. I would have been happy if either side had won, though.

i went to Turkey. i threw on the ground a piece of outdated currency that some bastard vendor gave me with my change. riot ensues. cops come. turns out you can get 5 years in the can for doing that. they had just put away 2 Swede backpackers for 5 years for burning currency to light their cigarettes at a nite club. the money is not allowed to be destroyed. see the money has a picture of Ataturk on it. its a 'secular' Islamic Republic or something, so they have replaced the Allah with Ataturk. ANYWAY, i went on about how Ataturk was the greatest man ever ever, and with their inherent inferiority complex, since theyll never be real Europeans since they raided and raped the land from Greece and have the worst human rites record ever, they were quite pleased with my comments and let me go. we shook hands, they called me their friend, and i caught the next plane to Italy.

hahahaha spot on, that little paragraph will explain everything about behaving in turkey to anyone interested in going there, including the ass-kissing "ataturk is the greatest man evar!!!" line.

Turks are the good guys. They're the ones that are taking over from the UK and US troops in Afganistan as the UK troops are suffering from heat stroke and the US troops are too busy blowing themselves and the allied forces up.

From my experience, Turks are just as patriotic about their nation as the Americans. However, they seem to have enough problems in their own country to go stick their noses into other countries affairs.

They are not a typical muslim country. They are a very westernised nation, much due to Ataturk bringing them out of that whole Middle-East mythos. In fact, because of him they use the Germanic alphabet that you are all reading in this message.

I also don't see how it can be said that Turks are dirty. OK, maybe football wise they fall over a bit too much, but nowhere near the levels of the Italians and Brazillians. If by dirty, it's understood that they do not wash, then they can't be muslims, as muslims always keep themselves very clean, washing many times a day, especially before prayers - but as I mentioned earlier, they are not a devout muslim nation. If they were, why would they have a very popular beer, and spirits on sale throughout their nation, and exported all over Europe.

The main problem is that, due to the Cyprus problem, there are a few difficulties between Greece and Turkey - but they are being dealt with. In fact, Turkey and Greece are putting together a joint bid on hosting the Football World Cup in 2010. When there was a big earthquake in Greece a couple of years ago, the Turks were the first people to go help. People were lining the streets to give blood to their supposed "enemies". The same thing happened when Turkey suffered a quake and the Greeks went to help.

There are many supposed crimes that went on in Cyprus, by both sides. I've heard Grek and Turkish Cypriots go on about atrocities commited there and to be honest, both nations were as bad as each other. But who is anyone to complain? The Brits who committed one of the most serious war crimes ever over Dresden? The "squeaky clean" Americans where to even begin to list their flagrant disregard to anything "Un-American" would fill up way too much space here.

You know, Turkey is much more like the US than Greece is. I go to both regularly and it's obvious.

Anyway, I'm going on too much. I just hope Turkey wins the World Cup, which, unlike the world series (it doesn't warrent capitalisation), involves teams from all over this great, but flawed planet that we live on.

The main reason I want them to win is that I'll win 660 quid!!! Woo-hoo!

OK, now back to doing poor Photoshops for me - I've had my little bit of trying to enlighten some blinkered little minds.

Umidude, it is nice to see at least one educated person on this message board.
Turks massacred Armenians? Yes. There was a war going on and the Armenians resorted to guerilla warfare in order to try to secure their own homeland. The Russians had promised them help against the Turks but after a few revolutions, including the Bolshevik Revolution, they withdrew support for the Armenians and left them to be massacred against the Turks. (though the Armenians somehow like to prefer to hold a grudge against the Turks rather than the Russians).
As for Cyprus? Umidude, again, you are right on.
As for the soccer team, good for them, they did play a better game, though I think they will have their hands full with Brazil. (It's going to be a great rematch, I think...the first game should have ended in a tie).

2002-06-22 06:20:39 PM
UMIDUDE: nice post.

Lets just pray that the turks and the germans dont meet in the finals. it will be civil war in germany if it happens. Kreuzberg in Berlin will BURN!

for those of you who dont know, theres a large turk minority in germany which is similarly perceived by the germans as the mexicans are in the US.

That is an awesome drink! Also, the one with Ataturk's picture on it too (was Club Raki?)

Anyway...

"If by dirty, it's understood that they do not wash, then they can't be muslims, as muslims always keep themselves very clean, washing many times a day, especially before prayers -" Yes, it is true that Muslims wash before prayers, but I have observed this carefully, and from what I can tell, they wash using public fountains - usually OUTSIDE, what this means is that they cannot wash thme parts that usually are most need of washing, they can only wash the face, hands, and feet (but not the genitals). Now, I guess it is a good thing they dont do that outside, but the bottom line is that this is questionable washing...

- Cyprus, after WWII, the brits gave it to Greeks, in the 70s the Turks attacked it and took over half the island. Then they paid Turkish citizens living in Turkey, to move to Cyprus, to justify having a military presense there ("we are here to protect our Citizens")

- Armenians, there is NO Evidence to show that a significant portion of the Armenys were fighting the Turks. A few did try to resist (pathetic effort). So Turks killed them all, starting with the younger (and strong) men, then the easy ones (the elderly, and children). This does not mean the Turkish citizens were bad (in fact they helped save a lot of Armenians by hiding them), but what it means is that the Turkish govt in charge at the time was (very, very) bad.

- The Kurds: they are seen as a threat, so again, they are being hunted and wiped out, and away to Iraq (where Saddam can kill them too).

The Turkish governments says "well no gov't is perfect, every nation has done something bad", that is true, but some nations admit at least some of their bad actions, the US admits doing bad stuff to the Indians, and the Germans admit doing bad stuff to Jews. The onlt problem with Turkey is that while saying" "well no gov't is perfect, every nation has done something bad", they claim they have not done ANYTHING bad. If they would just admit some stuff, that would help them be more likable (and trustable).

When I was in Turkey a while back, Galatasaray was my favorite team. But I have not followed it since. Were the colors orange and yellow? Anyway, I AM glad the Turks won, I still have fond memories of when I was there...

Brade

I looked at your bio and it says Ex-Turkish, just out of curiosity, what does that mean exactly.

Since the Turks invaded and drove the Greek-Cypriots out of their territory i'm curious as to how attrocities were commited from "both sides" .

It's tragic that ignorant people get credit as " educated " when posting such things.

As much as the turkish individual is ok , as a nation/country they've done some pretty horrible things including commiting genocide against the armenians and kurds. Oh, and they're about 100years back when it comes to human rights.

All in all, i think they are quite nationalistic and i can't really applaud that. They're not the devil but watching fark portraying them as angels really gets me going .

2002-06-23 01:08:38 AM
Brade, it's nice to know that there some sensible turks (ex-turks?) around. I am of Armenian origin, and the fact that the Turkish government will not admint to their crimes is what makes me and majority of Armenians hate the Turks with a passion. The right thing to do is to say that yes the government of the time farked up, but we are different, and we will try to smooth out the relationship between neighbors. But instead they continue their bullshiat. If they want to be taken seriously by the European community, that's exactly what they need to do. Not to pick on you, but saying that the Turkish governemnt was very very bad, is like saying Hitler was very very bad, when they were more than that, simply put they were murderous criminals and devils.

Bratt, i think i've talked to you before, just like a lot of your kind, you have a one track mind. You are what we call a turk shun.

2002-06-23 01:11:35 AM
MrWTF, now that's what I call an educated person. Thanks.

admint = admit in the above post.

2002-06-23 05:10:33 AM
BRADE: you are right, Turkish government has done some very shameful things, and do not admit them. And yes Galatasaray's colours are yellow and red (sari kirmizi) Cim bom bom!

MR WTF: Yes Turks are very patriotic, there is nothing wrong with having pride in your country. And sorry, but the Turkiye futbol team ARE angels!

2002-06-23 07:18:20 AM
The Turks didn't send theor people to live in Cyprus after the invasion. Many were already living there and had lived there for 100's of years. The Greeks slaughtered whole villages back then. There's a village dedicated to the dead - I think it's called Kanlicog (blood village) or something like that where even the babies were killed in their cots. But OK, there's probably the same on the Greek side.

Look, I'm desperately trying to stand on the fence here but attempt to back up the Turkish people too.

Just remember, Turkey is changing for the better. Why else would the UN and Allied forces have so much faith in them with the troubles in Afghanistan?

And yeah, they're very nationalistic. Like I mentioned before, it's due to them being proud of their country after all the Westernisation - which means becoming a country like yours and mine (mine being England). I wish we were more nationalistic here in England - it would bring the people together a whole lot more! Don't forget, with July the 4th approaching and all the celebrations there, think of what they stand for, and that's how Turkey sees themselves, breaking away from all their Kings and becoming a democratic nation. (and please let's not start a democracy debate as there's far far far more corrupt nations in the world)

And don't forget or deny, out of the two, I'd say the US is far more nationalistic than Turkey.

Actually, that reminds me of a funny story. I'm a Utah Jazz fan (which I know I'll get lots more hassle from than the whole Turkey thing!).

Every year for the last 5 years I fly out to Utah to watch them play. Well, I was in the Delta Centre with my girlfriend and this guy with a mullet (got a photo to prove it) turned round to us and asked why we were there because, being British, we had no right to be in the US as they were free from our tyrannical monarchy! He then went on about the Boston Tea Party and other things too. He was joking slightly but he meant most of it. Then, during the National Anthem before the start of play, my girlfriend did not stand up, and that really upset mullet boy. He said she should have stood up and respected this great nation. She said "With people like you, I have no respect!". You should have seen his face. She's a girl not to mess with!!!

Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you, but seriously, with what happened last September to an already Nationalistic country, it's kinda quadrupled the effect - with good cause too though.

Man I go on sometimes!

So to sum up...

Turkey is a very proud, nationalistic nation.

The US is also a very proud, nationalistic nation.

Turkey is a predominantly muslim nation but Moslems here drink, party and gamble like the rest of us. They even have a national lottery.

Turkey has had problems in the past but are working to sort them all out.

And please don't listen to people with biased opinions that cannot reasonably explain or detach themselves from their arguments. Or if you do, remember that there is always another side to the story. Listen to it. Don't judge too quick.

And enjoy the most fantastic, trouble free, football tournament ever!!!
