I really can't listen to radio at all anymore. Opie and Anthony, Mancow or the new local guy Barski are horrid. It's actually gotten worse from the Morning Zoos of the 1980s.

I've thought of sending in some of my tapes from the 8os and turning the industry around. I can dream it, can't I?

Sirius and XM better look to get into cell phones, because people aren't always in their car or near their stereo. But they are certainly near their cellphone almost all the time (work, car, home, out, etc.)

Guess I'm showing my age, but, when I'm driving or working, I'm always near my radio (or computer at work for streaming). On the bus I have my walkman or MP3. However my little cell phone stays in my bag unless I plan to make a call (or am getting a call).

They were much better when they played what they advertised... Kind of like MTv never playing videos, Q101 rarely plays alternative ROCK. Even more so, it rarely plays NEW rock. I guess it all comes down to personal taste. I live in Iowa now (go home to Chicago every few weekends) and listen to ROCK108. Which is much better than anything the Chicago radio scene has. Hell, PEORIA radio is better than Chicago...

I'm not sure how you're extrapolating your ratings, but I'm pretty sure with O&A being the #1 show on XM, plus having NYC, Philly, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Dallas as markets they broadcast to (with trends on a major upswing) I'm pretty sure the total audience that O&A are broadcasting to is bigger than Mancow's "Chicago + midwest suburbs + smaller markets" combination.

murph0837

Opie's been promising "big things" for Ron and Fez for the past six months. Rover is in Chicago, and he's a "friend of the show".

I doubt they'll get rid of one of Rover's biggest markets, and Dahl's not going anywhere, so I'm not sure where the hell O&A would fit.

My only idea is that they would put them on the Jack station in Chicago.

Fez: Run.

I'll stick with Stern on Sirius - good show with all the old material uncensored and ready to go.

Plus I like BBC Radio 1

Plus I like the Underground Garage

...etc

How does Leykis do in Chicago? There's a spot open there from 8-11.

2006-07-11 02:48:18 PM
It's not an easy comparison, but it's definately easier for advertisers to understand. Especially when you tell your sponsor that "Satellite doesn't have ratings." Well what the hell are they paying for? Granted, I haven't listened to satellite, but I imagine there has to be some kind of commercial sponsorship. Selling receivers can't be the only income. Though the local advertising dollar isn't necessarily easy to earn; I imagine it's even hard to find a national sponsor. There is another morning show in Chicago that has turned down syndication because they know their show works best just in the Chicago market, and their advertisers pay a premium for their audience.

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: ps Mancow sucks. He rips on Stern, yet he built his career impersonating him. Good riddance...

Obviously, you don't really listen to him.
He doesn't spend the whole morning oogling porn stars and hookers telling them "hot hot they are" and how his "little d!ck couldn't satisfy them"...

Stern is truly an @ssclown...

You're right, Mancow talks about what pigs some people are, then talks about how he bent a chick over a back alley dumpster outside a bar once. And then says how he isn't proud of it, as if that makes it better after he's already whored the story for ratings.

The man is a hypocritical dipshiat...and he DOES ripoff Stern. He just uses different means of shock. But the delivery and style, overall attitude, and the cast of recurring circus freaks...pure Stern.

There would be no Mancow without Stern.

/And I don't even like Stern that much

2006-07-11 02:57:43 PM
Yeah, Mancow sucks hard to the tune of $7 to $10 million in advertising revenue a year.

Citing that Mancow's program generates an estimated $7 to $10 million in annual revenue, Mark Masters, Mancow's syndicator and chief executive officer of Talk Radio Network FM, commented, "Mancow's track record of success in the top ten markets combined with the fact that his show has become an attractive environment for more than 25 national brand advertisers since 2004 position him favorably to take full advantage of the ratings quagmire created by Stern's early replacements. With more top markets on the way by year's end, the Mancow juggernaut is positioned for unprecedented growth."

Make what you will of the fact that this quote comes from his publicist, but the fact remains that his show has expanded wildly in the last few years. Either he has managed to fool everyone, or his show actually appeals to enough people to expand his market and generate millions in revenue.

I will probably be in the minority here in saying that I actually enjoy his show, and have for many years. I use to listen to him every morning when I was in school, but now that I have a real job that is 5 minutes from my house it is pretty pointless to even turn the radio on during the commute in the morning. So I haven't listened to him in a few years. I will still be sad to seem him go though. Does anyone remember Mancow TV?

2006-07-11 03:03:08 PM
The only thing I see wrong with XM and Sirius is that they require special hardware.

At least some electronics have Sirius support, but Xm seems to require their dedicated radio, and has few if any integrated options.

Cellphones...we call carry them, and we all change them every few years for little cost as part of our cell plans...so that's the best place to do it....integrate Sirius or XM into a cellphone, and make it function like a standalone unit...so no cell airtime charges. That would get them some business. The cell service providers could get a kickback from Sirius or XM as well for the number of people who sign-up...that way they get a taste as well.

It would be for the most part a win-win scenario. Oh, and with how crappy battery life is on cellphones, the OEm rechargable battery industry would love it too. Yet another winner.

That's the problem we face today....everyone wants to stand out, but consumers don't want something that stands out...they want a service that is easy to use, and requires as little hardware as possible to use. That's where integration comes to play....if they already have it, they will probably use it.

Radio sucks, but I use it all the time....why? bacause it's what's readily availible in my home...i have a clock radio, a kitchen radio, a shower radio, a crank-powered radio, a tuner in my living room stereo...pretty much I am swimming in FM tuners, so i might as well use some of them.

Around here (Madison WI), we get the Bob & Tom show. It can be entertaining when there's a funny comedian on. The prerecorded comedy bits are funny too, and they sell CDs of this stuff. The problem is, these guys are constantly cackling as the comic bits are presented. I thought that the CDs might be better, but after borrowing one from a friend, there they were, in all their cackling glory. Turn the mics off and STFU already.
Howard Stern was interesting, but he was booted from the station he was on (I think it was one of those Clear Channel stations), his shtick got pretty old after a while anyway.
I used to live near Chicago in the early '90s, and the best station for goofy DJ radio was WLUP. John Brandmeier in the morning, Kevin somebody on mid days, and Steve Dahl & Garry Meier at drivetime. It was a great lineup for the time, and when I wasn't listening to 'XRT, I was tuned to "The Loop".
Mancow was on another station also, but he was just as annoying then as he is now.

Despairagus

It's from a publicist. Let me reverse engineer those numbers.

The top billing station in the country pulls in about 70 million. That's one radio station, in New York, with 24 hours on the advertising clock.

So one show - that takes up 5 hours of the advertising clock - is syndicated to say 10 stations - that's 50 hours of advertising , and is still only pulling in 1/10th the billing of the #1 station in America.

"7 to 10 million dollars of revenue" - when the host is making three million - IS NOT THAT GOOD. Especially when the host has attitude problems.

I have that advantage because I live in a top 5 market, but I can only imagine how horrific it must be in places like Central Pennsylvania or the midwest.

Have to strongly disagree...I think the most unimaginative stations are in the bigger markets. Small town radio isn't as influenced by "consultants" and are more likely owned by local companies. Some of my favorite stations are ones I find driving down rural interstates.

"Your Woman" by White Town came up on my iPod today. I remember thinking, there once was a time when Q101 played quirky stuff like that.

In 1998 Mancow came to Q101 from a heavy rock radio station. That same week, Metallica was added to the Q101 playlist. At the time, I knew that Q101 had officially gone to hell and would only go further. Of course it did, with crapola like Slipknot and System of A Down and [[shudder]] Creed eventually becoming their bread and butter. Alternative radio died that day. (Moment of silence)

Mancow can go cry in his beer at Yak-zie's with Murph in the Morning and Wendy and Bill. (BTW the Diversey Yak-zie's)
