I wouldn't ever pay any kind of reparations. Ever.

I didn't do anything and I'm not responsible for crap that happened 150 years ago. Stop looking for a free ride.

2006-07-11 11:55:59 AM
Sounds fair to me.

2006-07-11 11:59:14 AM
Wow, every black person in the US wants reparations? That's pretty amazing, submitter!

2006-07-11 11:59:47 AM
JEEthuth Critht!

2006-07-11 12:00:43 PM
bboy, you apparently can't parse the submitter's language.

"Black people in the US want slavery reparations" is not equal to "All black people in the US want slavery reparations."

The first sentence - the headline - means "Within the set of persons who inhabit the US, there is some subset of persons who (a) are black, and (b) want reparations."

As I said yesterday, I'll be happy to reprimand any ex slaves.

Stupid idea. Probably some greedy lawyers at it again

/I want reparations for my ancestors pig that got raped by the Normans in 1070.

2006-07-11 12:09:40 PM
I'm all for full slavery reparations...

IF

we completely eliminate all minority preferences at the same time, and officially start at a "clean slate" so I don't have to listen to shiat about "your ancestors enslaved my ancestors, and we live in a culture of white privilege, and that's why I smoke crack, impregnate 14 year olds, and need welfare."

What's the statute of limitations on slavery?

2006-07-11 12:17:59 PM
do i get reparations for my polish ancestors who were round up and placed into labor camps? what about my sicilian ancestors whose land was repeatedly pillaged and raped?

i am not against all forms of retribution, but to give hand outs is silly. i never enslaved anybody, nor did my immediate ancestors. they were busy in europe.

2006-07-11 12:18:56 PM
Litig8r
I would like to add that anyone receiving reparations is repatriated back into their ancestors' homeland. Isn't this what they want payment for being denied their ancestor's heritage?

2006-07-11 12:19:36 PM
It would be a hard thing to document. How can someone legally prove that they are descended from a slave? Most folks don't know the name of the christian names of their Great Grandparents and that would only take you to the later half of the 19Th century.

2006-07-11 12:21:28 PM
I've got a better idea:

If I'm going to be punished for something (owning slaves), then I might as well do what I'm being punished for.

If my money is taken for reparations, I'm going to enslave some of the people that received the reparations.

Cotton's old hat, though. I'll probably have them making Nikes or assembling motherboards.

This sort of crap drives me nuts. The people who did it and the people who let it happen are farking DEAD. Why the hell are people so intent on making others pay for crimes they didn't commit?

And don't get started on that whole "I belong in Africa" shiat. It doesn't fly when you're a fourth gen American.

The society is so farked up that they can't even issue an official "apology in general for general wrong things we may have done that will make people feel vindicated and we can put this behind us now and just get the fark on with our lives" because some arsehat will take it as admittance of guilt and sue.

dumbasses.

How can you have a statute of limitations on something that wasn't against the law at the time?

2006-07-11 12:26:27 PM
I once read an editorial that talked about the fact that people ignore the ONLY positive externality of slavery...not having to be born and raised in Africa. Since all the evil deeds are behind us, that's at least something to chew on. Even the perception of being poor and oppressed in America is better than the reality of being that in most of West Africa.

I neither agree nor disagree with it, since I can't really make any kind of moral sense out of it...

So, will the reparations include the African tribes who sold their slaves, won as prisoners-of-war during tribal warfare, to the white traders?

And will any of these reparation funds be used to help stop the slavery and human trafficking going on currently in Africa?

A friend of mine who is an attorney and I are sitting on ready for this. We are going to get in on the class demanding a cut for my ancestor's partcipation in the Civil War on behalf of the Union Army...specificall the New Jersey 7th Regiment. I figure the fact that he was at Gettysburg is worth a little more too.

About 95% of all Anglo-descent whites came here in Colonial times as indentured servants. Their survival rate was worse than slaves, because an indentured servant was like the colonial equivalent of a rental car.

Other whites came from Slavic countries. Their name literally means 'slave' and the feudal serf system still practiced in Eastern Europe was brutal.

While people love to tell little stories about how they are related to kings, noblemen and intellectuals we are mostly the well fed stock of ex-slaves and thieves who came here to escape their living hell.

The US isn't a country that was populated by white gloved aristocrats. We should be proud of that.

Everyone is a slave to THE MAN.

/hands uncle sam another chunk of my paycheck

2006-07-11 12:45:02 PM
I'm all for it, and I don't think we should have to limit it to those that can "prove" their ancestory. Do the math, if we give, say 40 million people a one time payment of 10 million, it's less than the war cost's in 6 months.

No more set asides
no more minority hiring
many people, though not all, would no longer qualify for need based government assistance, SHUTTING DOWN HUGE PROGRAMS, saving millions.

and most importantly, where would all that money go?? housing? check. automobile manufacturing? check. Investments? check. durable goods? check. High end, "luxury items"? check. education? check.

I could go on., heck, it's a hellava idea...

at ease, I'll be in the area all day.

As a first generation American of Irish parents, all I have to say is... "My family wasn't here back then! We didn't do shiat to anyone!"

And, please, check Irish history... my people were being enslaved long before any Africans started giving up their own folks to slave traders.

2006-07-11 12:48:44 PM
It's the government, not crackers. The taxes on the reparations themselves will pay for 1/3 of it anyway, which might make it an even stupider idea.

Dancin_In_Anson: We are going to get in on the class demanding a cut for my ancestor's partcipation in the Civil War on behalf of the Union Army

Union conscripts and volunteers were compensated for their service. Why do you feel a debt is owed?

Were your ancestors black? Before 1864 they were paid only half the wage of the white soldiers.

I think we can safely bet, based on the abuse of handouts from Katrina, that you can uncheck investments and education.

2006-07-11 01:14:20 PM
Uh no.

My great-grandparents emigrated here AFTER slavery was abolished. So I'm not paying a cent.

I would venture to guess that the majority of Americans are descended from immigrants who emigrated AFTER slavery was abolished.

jarrett: Union conscripts and volunteers were compensated for their service. Why do you feel a debt is owed?

Hey I have just as much right as anyone to get compensated for something that I had nothing to do with.

There's an argument for that lame ass excuse too...Pay up...and I want my cut!

I don't think it should matter anyway. The oldest relative I ever met was born in 1889. Why should we have to pay for the mistakes of ancestors removed by 6-10 generations?

True. I say we stop paying politicians during election years. It's not like they're getting any *real* work done.
