Yay! Crackheads and felons! Who's my roomate?

2006-07-11 02:24:45 AM
Well, at least you know he won't be gay. That's something, eh?

El_Swino: That's something, eh?

Let's cook-up.

2006-07-11 02:37:39 AM
If we do that, you'll fail your next piss test. Or does cook-up mean something else down there?

BBQ and beans, Silly!

The BBQ part I comprehend. The beans part...I dunno.

cut student loan funds, raise the price of tuition sky high and don't raise the minimum wage for nine years. helps.

2006-07-11 03:36:28 AM
The United States Military raised the price of tuition sky high, Pope George Ringo? Do tell, how?

2006-07-11 08:38:38 AM
I've seen some of the new "older" recruits. Instead of yelling at them, I help them across the street. As far as the dumb ones go, well...we always need someone to paint and sweep up.

/Fark redefinitions: Everybody is a "smoker" until they go into the military, then they become "crackheads."

This is several years old but:

Air Force will not Increase Non-High School Diploma Recruits: Gen. Michael E. Ryan bristles at suggestions that the Air Force use more high school dropouts to fill its depleted ranks. He said he agrees with airmen who tell him, "I'd rather go short than go stupid" when recruiting future generations of airmen. His comments came during an April 25 interview with Air Force Times reporters and editors. As the service tries to recruit 34,000 airmen this year, it will stick with its normal standard of accepting no more than 1 percent who are high school dropouts or people with a general equivalency diploma.

I'm guessing that's still the policy. Not everyone is lowering their standards.

Isn't there a Demotivator related to this that we can send them?

Uh you really need to see some of the douchebags we currently have in.

I would rather take a hard working HS dropout than Johnny farking thinks this is the Marine corps.

An-Unnecessarily-Long-Name: Uh you really need to see some of the douchebags we currently have in.

There were douchebags when I was in as well. I worked with and for a few of them. There will always be douchebags. I'm just glad, at least back when that was quoted, that they decided not to lower the ASVAB standards to get in. That was a good thing.

2006-07-11 10:48:23 AM
Er, IIRC that was also on the table in addition to the percentage of HS droppouts let in. It's not mentioned in that small snippet.

2006-07-11 11:04:44 AM
Do we really believe high school drop outs can't drive a truck or shoot an M-16?

Honestly, it isn't rocket science. Sure, you don't put them in an F-22 or commanding an armoured division, but surely there are plenty of grunt work jobs that don't need a knowledge of english lit and biology.

There must be a lot of skinheads.

Major Thomb

I don't think its bashing, but lowering the allowable test scores does make you think, no?

In October, the Army allowed 4% of incoming recruits from lower test brackets. Since the 1980s, the cap had been set at 2% for recruits.

Dusk-You-n-Me

yeah, but that's the airforce, where you're many times more likely to be killed by your own stupidity then by enemy action.

2006-07-11 11:08:04 AM
Little disingenuous... They've made their monthly goals because they drastically lowered their monthly goals, expecting that they'll make up the difference by the end of the year. It's hinted at in the article in a few places, but never spelled out.

Nonetheless, remember this at the end of the year when they say the military failed to meet its annual recruiting goals, despite meeting every single monthly goal except the final month.

2006-07-11 11:08:28 AM
The 2 billion of our tax dollars per year we spend on advertising for the military is clearly not enough…

2006-07-11 11:08:39 AM
The practice of lowering standards to insure success is not always bad.

A) It has gotten me laid on several occasions.

B) It has insured the integration of our nations police forces.

I cant really tell if 99% of these guys even took it. Id have to say that a good 75% of the people in my Career field cannot do thier job. Thats why they are getting rid of them.

Yup, cause that's all the Army does.

wow.

chaddsfarkprefect: Yup, cause that's all the Army does.

Unless you go into the tech fields you can pretty much garuntee that your ass will be in in a convoy. Either driving or holding a gun, but your ass is going to be in a truck.

SSPinkerton: yeah, but that's the airforce, where you're many times more likely to be killed by your own stupidity then by enemy action.

I'll agree with that especially working on some of the things I worked on.

An-Unnecessarily-Long-Name: I cant really tell if 99% of these guys even took it. Id have to say that a good 75% of the people in my Career field cannot do thier job. Thats why they are getting rid of them.

You're 3C0 right? I think I've chatted with you before. I was 3C0 for a little while right before I got out.

chaddsfarkprefect: Yup, cause that's all the Army does.

It's not all the Army does, but it's all some people in the Army do.

Hence the policy of allowing 2% of the low-score recruits (now 4%). Not everyone in an organization needs to be a rocket scientist.

Also proving, if you post a job listing saying that the dreggs of society will get free guns and the chance to shoot minorities and foreigners...you will get a ton of candidates you normally wouldn't if you demanded an education and intelligence.

2006-07-11 11:17:19 AM
From the article

This year, the Army set higher monthly goals for the summer months, setting its sights on recent high school and college graduates.

Why don't we offer citizenship to illegals who agree to serve for 2 years in the Army?

How about we stop fighting so many farking wars.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think that more than 1% of the Army does stuff like that. We may be the most technologically advanced military in the world, but we've still got our fair share of groundpounders too.

2006-07-11 11:19:34 AM
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;

And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

Where are all of the sabre rattling patriots hiding?

They're always there to defend the war, not that interested in helping win it in the the ground though.

Quack.

Ah nice. I enjoyed my short time as one. Definitely some idiot people out there for sure, no matter the career field. Lots of really bright ones too though. I found as many of those folks as I could and latched on.

sorefarkr: Headso Source?

it was one of the facts cited in the movie "Why We Fight"

It seems fairly intuitive considering the "total" budget is around 500 billion that they would spend less then a half a percent on advertising for new recruits.

2006-07-11 11:22:10 AM
Instead of taking 2% from the lower 1/3rd of the test scores the Army now takes 4% of those testing in the lower third. Then they train them to be soldiers. Don't expect to see much change up or down. There are still enough patriots to recruit & plenty of people that like to shoot weaps & blow stuff up. Instead of telling the Army how stupid they are you might want to say a thank you for doing something the average person doesn't want to do. Plus, where else can you get $400k life insurance for $26/mth.

I've been wondering that exact same thing. I know we did it in past wars and it might make sense to do it now.

fark you, asshat.

priestrape

I would wholeheartedly agree if this were before 2003, but I wouldn't wish military service on my enemies now with "The War." I think we would find most would serve as well as the most able, patriotic, and competent Americans. It reminds me of the Guatemalen born soldier who died here in Ohio a few months ago. That man's whole life deserves a [HERO] tag.
