Anyway, that video will not slow the WBC down at all. They are insane, somehow one abusive madman made his whole extended family adopt his madness, they are basically just extensions of his attention-seeking, waiting-for-another-lucrative-lawsuit will now.

Fred Phelps is doing himself a grave injury. Many of those people who did not mind him protesting gay funerals are deeply offended by him protesting military funerals. While this might not seem like a big deal, it is. Is is making people on the fence take a side. He is showing just how hateful he is and he is losing support because of it.

Yes, there are the batshiat insane people who do beleive that God is such an incompitent farkup that He would kill soldiers rather than they gays He's mad at. But reasonable people are looking at this man in undisguised horror.

He is actually helping his "enemies" more than he is hurting them. People look at the gay people they know and then they look at Phelps and they think "Wow, that Ed Grubermann isn't such a bad guy. All he wants is to live in peace and cornhole his boyfriend. But that Fred Phelps guy is a raving nutcase!" and they slowly begin to move, ever so slightly, to the side of enlightened humanity.

And "gook" is apparently derived from the non-offensive Korean term "hangook", but it was still a racist term used by US soldiers to dehumanize their enemy. Like "hadji" is now.

BTW Rob Halford, while truly a Metal God, is not the tough leatherman to take care of these clowns. Only somebody judgement-proof, with nothing to lose, could hurt these people, and even then the survivors would just profit by suing the police for not protecting them well enough. Fred himself doesn't appear at every protest so you might not even cut the head off.

Their vile behaviour is protected by your First Amendment anyway. The worm will turn when courts start throwing out their lawsuits, believe me then they will reap what they have sown, and wither and die.

Someone should make a HUGE banner (roughly 30 feet long, about 6 feet high) that says GOD BLESS AMERICA AND OUR TROOPS, and hold it in a way that completely blocks off Felps. If he moves, just reposition yourself between him and the funeral.

I'm sure it would drive him nuts.

In all seriousness, I see people like the Patriot Guard as being the true solution to hatemongers like Phelps. I have very serious problems with laws that prohibit protests at things like funerals .. not because I agree with the protests (far from it!) but because I feel that the principle of free speech in an open society is stronger (and more important) than the whims of a handful of religious zealots. I abhor funeral protests as much as I abhor flag burning, but that doesn't mean that they should be illegal.

I love the Patriot Guard because they demonstrate the true "solution" to unpopular free speech: more free speech! Phelps and his hateful band have the right to spread their "Christian" message as they see fit, but the Patriot Guard also have the right to counter-demonstrate and drown them out. Seriously, how cool is that? Banning protests at funerals is a first step that can be extrapolated to all sorts of nefarious ends from both the left and right-wing perspective. Let's not go down that road. Let the slobbering old coot wave his signs. And let decent Americans wave their own signs in rebuttal. That's what America is supposed to be about.

It is interesting, however, that few folks seemed to care when he was limiting his protests to the funerals of people like Matthew Shepard. If anybody can provide a reasonable explanation of why our troops are "more American" then Shepard, then I would be most interested to hear it.

Unlike your garden-variety attention whore, the Phelps clan goes into it knowing that they're pests -- in other words, they EXPECT people to try to ignore them.

You ignore Madonna, and she's going to get naked somewhere or otherwise try to entice you. Not Phelps. You ignore a pest, and they keep upping the ante, forcing you to confront them. And yeah, that doesn't mean you can't try, but implicit in that is the acknowledgement that you're turning a blind eye to the fact he's terrorizing and victimizing folks who don't deserve it, and usually in their weakest hour.

I'd like to see him get a LOT more attention. Hopefully from our legal system, the IRS, and several large men wearing ski-masks.
