(Some Wheeeee) Video Some states are banning the practice of "flying" inflatable watercraft behind speedboats. To that end, here's a videoclip that'll make you want to go try this immediately   (youtube.com) divider line 208

I've done this many times over the last 6 or 7 years. I've only seen two bad (non-fatal) accidents.
/They bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say: Let 'em crash!

2006-07-06 09:22:27 PM
Yes, please.

2006-07-06 09:30:19 PM
Never soar higher than you are willing to fall.

That sounds like good advice anywhere.

2006-07-06 09:35:33 PM
That looks like a blast!!!

Yeah, as soon as the insurance companies take a look, for sure they will on the phone with their locally purchased state representative.

2006-07-06 10:25:13 PM
It was kind of hard to see through all the text disclaimers and warnings, but the "paid professionals" doing the riding appeared to have helmets on. Seems like a real "hold my beer and watch this" kinda thing.

2006-07-06 10:48:23 PM
It's called kite tubing, and it's illegal.

2006-07-06 10:52:08 PM
Oh, hell yes

2006-07-06 11:02:11 PM
I'll take three, thanks.

/now to rent a motorcraft...

2006-07-06 11:10:55 PM

MaxxLarge: It's called kite tubing, and it's illegal.

seriously curious... have any references for that? 'kite tubing' and any laws regarding it are escaping my weak google-fu

2006-07-06 11:56:44 PM
Megain: Reference.

2006-07-07 12:10:03 AM
Flab: Megain: Reference.

thank you - i was seriously drawing a blank with finding anything

so it's been banned in two or three states. i think the blanket statement it's illegal is a bit of a stretch, or at least doesn't take locale into consideration. hell, i could do it within a 20 minute drive (to get to a sizable enough lake) and it wouldn't be illegal. and i live in one of the states it's supposedly 'illegal' in

2006-07-07 12:23:42 AM
Great, now I've got a new entry on my todo list.

Why yes, I am a redneck, why do you ask?

"Hey y'all, check this out!"

2006-07-07 12:27:39 AM
!!! I WANT ONE !!!

2006-07-07 12:36:42 AM
i'd do it.

2006-07-07 12:46:18 AM
Why do they have to ban anything that is fun? People die and are hurt all the time. Might as well be having fun when it happens.

2006-07-07 12:47:41 AM
I'll bet California bans it first. Just a guess.

2006-07-07 12:48:13 AM
"It looks cool..but if you don't know what you're doing..it can be extremely dangerous. It's just like a kite..if the wind hits it the wrong way or your balance is off ..it will plummet to the water like a rock. A kid is in Tampa right now, in a coma, because his aorta separated from his heart after falling from this thing."

2006-07-07 12:48:50 AM
Even though they don't have many lakes suitable for it.

2006-07-07 12:48:53 AM
Wow... a Manta Ray that lets you break the law. I guess that makes it a Devil Ray. Except that would just sink.

2006-07-07 12:49:34 AM
I'm doing it....as we speak.

2006-07-07 12:50:41 AM

this country *IS* full of retards.

/raises hand

2006-07-07 12:50:52 AM
hey TF'ers - can you post the link about it being illegal in here? This looks like it might be fun on the river here.

2006-07-07 12:52:09 AM

2006-07-07 12:52:26 AM
I was all excited until they called it an "extreme sport" Man, I hate that term.

2006-07-07 12:52:39 AM
Screaming rock guitar sold separately.

2006-07-07 12:55:39 AM
I'm learnin' to fly,
But I ain't got wings.
Comin' down,
Is the hardest thing.

/C'mon, Beavis. We're there, dude.

2006-07-07 12:56:41 AM
I need to see video from the rider's perspctive.

2006-07-07 12:57:14 AM
I don't have a boat. Can I tow it with my pickup?

2006-07-07 12:57:16 AM
the children! won't someone think of the children?

/nah, i'd rather try to play areial bumper manta's

2006-07-07 12:58:01 AM
Dangerous because it's way too easy for any idiot to do it without any idea WTF he's doing.

Same with much kitesurfing/boarding early on. "Ooh, a kite, just like I had as a kid"

2006-07-07 12:58:29 AM
Discordian36: hey TF'ers - can you post the link about it being illegal in here? This looks like it might be fun on the river here.

Definitely going the way of lawn darts and three wheeled ATVs.

2006-07-07 01:00:31 AM
There's not much else to say other than that such an activity looks like nothing but a 7 ton weeping sack of awesome.

/ could get killed walkin' your doggie!

2006-07-07 01:02:06 AM
HAHAHAHAHAH NakedApe wins the thread....

strangeguitar: I've only seen two bad (non-fatal) accidents.

bad = non-fatal
good = fatal
?

2006-07-07 01:05:10 AM
Wow...even with the driving redneck symphony in the background it looks extraordinarily dull.

"Lookit me! I'm being pulled around in the air by a motorboat!"

2006-07-07 01:05:52 AM
When whatever the hell that is (kite tubing, appearantly) is outlawed... only outlaws will be doing whatever the hell that is (some folks call it kite tubing... I call it kaiser tubing... hmm mmm...)

/you can have my kite tube when you pry it from my pruney broken fingers!

2006-07-07 12:57:14 AM NakedApe

I don't have a boat. Can I tow it with my pickup?

No reason you couldn't get that to work on snow.

2006-07-07 01:06:46 AM
This seems like a fun enough past time. I don't think I would elevate the activity to "sport" just yet.

That being said, I don't think it should be illegal, as any injury is just the result of the stupidity of the user in the majority of cases, just like fireworks.

2006-07-07 01:07:35 AM
"Victims have reported coughing up blood, torn muscles, whiplash type injuries, broken ribs, punctured lungs and cervical fractures,"

Reminds me of my honeymoon.

Seriously, "cervical fractures" sounds more like a marital injury than a sports injury.

And what the heck is up with Troy Bridges? Did he need Botox and a coat hanger to get that smile? (Random ad from the sidebar)

2006-07-07 01:08:47 AM
Put some sharp metal edges on it and I'm in.

\seriously

2006-07-07 01:09:24 AM
No reason you couldn't get that to work on snow.

hmmmm behind a snowmobile

2006-07-07 01:09:34 AM
"The tubes often overturn or throw the rider, according to the Corps."
So, as long as I read the rules about how the Corps wants the rider thrown I'm OK?
Shiat, I live about 15 miles from Clearwater Lake, and I'm amazed they don't have these things going side by side tossing lawn darts at each other. Around here we call it thinning the herd.

\No rules, just right

whatisitgoodfor

"Victims have reported coughing up blood, torn muscles, whiplash type injuries, broken ribs, punctured lungs and cervical fractures,"

Reminds me of my honeymoon.

Lucky you.. reminds me of my divorce!

/totally worth it!

2006-07-07 01:11:05 AM
Bah, that's sissy stuff...I fly mine behind my car.

/but only around the neighborhood

2006-07-07 01:11:33 AM
I'd be willing to do it if there weren't that many pinch harmonics in the music accompanying me.

2006-07-07 01:13:59 AM
I've been looking for a niche job in the Mexican resort areas. This might just be it.

Added bonus, Mexico has no personal liability laws.

2006-07-07 01:14:15 AM
Meh...strapped to a giant kid's floaty toy pulled behind a boat.

It's a sorry substitute for paragliding, and a lame imitation of a fast personal watercraft. The worst of both worlds but twice as dangerous as either.

/really cool products don't need guitar riffs in the background to sell them

2006-07-07 01:14:36 AM
It actually sounds like a graduation speech.
"Only soar as far as you're willing to fall"

/wrote that down
