ccmods - ah. That's right. I turned it off when I first got this machine and promptly forgot about it. I see it is still not really 'productively' useful, unlike Fark, which is unproductively VERY useful.

ccmods: Active Desktop basically lets you embed a browser window into your desktop, so you can have HTML/flash/etc. on your desktop. It's basically eyecandy; I haven't found a real productive use of it.

Plus now we have Widgets for useless eyecandy...

A lot of tech-oriented people use multiple monitors. All the programmers at my workplace have at least two each.

I'm lucky enough to have four monitors. Three are 21" CRTs running at 1600x1200 each, and there's also a 19" LCD running at 1280x1024. That gives me a total desktop of nearly 6080x1200.

For me, the Mario webpage only takes up a small rectangle in the middle of my desktop.

Good post.

Can I make the color behind my icons transparent?

The web page basically tells to set the background color for your icons to the 'sky' color. Of course you'll have to move your icons so that they aren't sitting in front of any non-sky parts of the background.

2006-07-03 02:05:32 AM
By the way, is Mario supposed to be on the background? I don't see him :(

Umm, that would be me (I run two 20.5" IBM LCD's to code and view) and I still ask the questions - "What are you developing?" and "Remember the User?".

/pfft - Tech oriented.

suggestion: Move mario to the left so people with less than 1600x1200 can see him. even at that eye destroying resolution on my 19inch hes at the very far right.

ok playing with it a bit. I do not know java at all so this is just a crap solution.

in the file mario.htm set the line:

mariox = 1570;

to something like

mariox = 950;

gives me a nice placement for mario. Havent found a way to change his Y value without screwing stuff up.

Ah, I misread your post as meaning "why would someone have such a big monitor." I guess your real message was "why develop for a fixed resolution," with which I heartily agree.

Go have a pizza at Giordano's for me.

/I miss Chicago. Sniff.
//DevStudio across three monitors, Outlook/StarTeam sharing the other. Hmm, maybe I need another monitor.

I made a simple little to-do list using javascript and XML and set it as my background... it's actually damned convenient; dynamically check off a task or add one, auto-purge of completed tasks. Active Desktop doesn't have many uses, but it does have a few.

Sh4dow

That's really cool, man. I started looking over the javascript, and my eyes started glazing over... it's well-structured and commented, I'm just not THAT good at javascript. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for sharing.

This is so cool, but I can't figure out how to get it on my desktop. When I go to the desktop display properties and go to the mario folder it keeps wanting me to open the images in the folder. What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's simple, but it's 2am right now and I'm a little out of it. Any help is appreciated.

2006-07-03 04:54:43 AM
I remember when I had an active desktop, with as much as I crashed that computer my desktop was probably more often the white "Active Desktop Recovery" screen than whatever I had for a desktop.

Good suggestion, mario moved over easy enough with this fix. He is too far off screen at 1280x1024.

I'm inclined to agree with ya on that. If I want Super Mario, I'll just play the game.

Yeah I've changed his Y and X value for my 1024x768 resolution, download my modified htm file here

Ultra Hal: Why is this cool? Just curious. Looks like a system-hogging toy to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you like that sort of thing. I just wonder if it 'does' anything useful.

Maybe some people find it fun and don't look at their computer as some monolithic tool that can only be used to recompile the latest Linux kernel and measure stats to wave e-penises with other geek friends.

OH NOES!!! My computer's using 5% of the system resources instead of the normal 1% I use by surfing the 'net with Lynx so I have geek cred!!! System hogging!!! What a waste!!!

The odds of it being usefull on my 1280X800 mac seem slim.

I found a bug, The turtle shell doesn't kill any of the baddies.

2006-07-03 09:43:13 AM
"It's designed for a 1920x1600 screen"

1920/1600 = 1.2 aspect ratio

most monitors run are designed to run at 1.3...
(800/600,1024/768,1600/1200,etc...)

How many poeple actually have widescreen monitors unless they bought one of those nifty media center PC's?

2006-07-03 09:43:35 AM
I've modified the background to span over two monitors at a resolution of 2560 x 1024 (as in, I fiddled with the background image a bit and added a few more boxes).

I've also stripped off that white line at the bottom where the taskbar would be, except it isn't on the second monitor.

If anyone is interested the dual-monitor-modified version is at http://telestatic.net/mario.rar

From the pages FAQ:

Q. Why don't the enemies hit each other?

A. Never got around to it.

I have a technical problem I hope one of you guys can help me with.

When I eat the mushroom, I get big, but when I jump after the leaf, the little italian dude falls down this hole.

How is that useful?

And before you yell at me, I DID google "Little Italian Guy Down hole" and came up empty.

Here's another possibility: some computers (read: mine) are not really that top of the line (read: old and bordering on obsolete), and haven't been replaced due to budget constraints (read: I'm poor), so if I want to run resource-intensive programs (read: yay games!), I need my computer's resources to not be drained from extraneous processes to the point where it freezes up every five minutes (read: I speak from experience).

That said, the solution is for me not to get the desktop and for you to get a big bottle of happy pills so you don't make pissy posts (read: chill out, it's just a Fark thread).

This background was cool for about a minute. Back to Andromeda.

Wow, I can't get the desktop icons to become trasparent.

Tried everything in that help forum, but no dice.

I looked to turn off Active Desktop from the registry, but going by their location in regedit, I didn't have active desktop at all.

Might explain something?

Man I wish I still had my Nes and SMB3 (record 3 straight playthoughs in a row)

I havn't had a backround in ages, useless for me. Simple dark blueish color and I'm fine.
