It's designed for a 1920x1600 screen

Jebus, people, my 19-inch screen's a struggle for me even at 1024x, with my aging eyesight. Are y'all sitting in front of 50-inch plasmas? And get off my lawn.

2006-07-02 11:39:34 PM
slick, in it's own sorta way.

doesn't beat the java-based q3-in-a-web-page tho.

I got it to work, and its pretty cool. Only lets you click stuff once per time, though.

Not as cool as my sweet Metroid interactive desktop.

That's exactly what I thought.

Why is this cool? Just curious. Looks like a system-hogging toy to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you like that sort of thing. I just wonder if it 'does' anything useful.

Can I make the color behind my icons transparent?
Not that I'm aware of, you can however set it to be the same background color:

I thought it was possible to make the color behind the icons transparent. I just can't seem to remember how..

I agree with somemoron. Besides I don't think this would work for me anyway; the first thing I do when I install Windows is run gpedit.msc and set "allow only bitmapped wallpaper".

Maybe some people find it fun and don't look at their computer as some monolithic tool that can only be used to recompile the latest Linux kernel and measure stats to wave e-penises with other geek friends.

OH NOES!!! My computer's using 5% of the system resources instead of the normal 1% I use by surfing the 'net with Lynx so I have geek cred!!! System hogging!!! What a waste!!!

2006-07-03 12:48:44 AM
Alyna_jf, you need a program like WinRAR or PowerArchiver to extract it. WinZip might extract them too but I haven't used it in years (and don't recommend it).

you need a program called winrar, does the icon that you downloaded look like a set of books?

It's very cool. I'm going to try to do the same with the javascrip version of astroids...

Noticed a big spike in my webserver traffic just now and discovered this in the referral log ;)

You remind me of my old boss who use to deride me for moving my mouse pointer around out of boredom when a program was loading because it "wastes CPU cycles".

*puke*

no, it looks like this... how would you describe that icon anyway?

Ultra Hal

What exactly happens when the javascript running behind that whole thing starts leaking memory? I think thats what he's hinting at. The less eye candy, the better. Cute for a little webpage toy though.

There's this really cool site that some of us nerds use to find answers to things, such as what to do with unknown file extensions...you may have heard of it...

It's called GOOGLE.

You need WinRAR. Its the 733+ way to zip files. Beyond RAR files there are also PAR files. PAR files cure computer cancer. No one knows how PAR files work including the people who invented them.

Alyna_jf: Download it again, I've changed the format to a .zip file.

I have to imagine you've never had a jscript crash IE before. Or ever see this screen:

Linky

2006-07-03 01:09:27 AM
Been using it for about twenty minutes now, and explorer.exe isn't using any more cpu or mem than usual.

ccmods: I have to imagine you've never had a jscript crash IE before. Or ever see this screen:

I must write pretty simple scripts and I have seen that screen before, but it was mostly due to something else leaking - IE.

Ultra-Hal - Defensive much? I said it was my understanding it was a toy, nothing more, and I asked if it did anything aside from taking up system resources. I believe I said that there wasn't anything wrong with that, if you like it. Also, I don't use Linux - why you think I do is a mystery. From now on, start taking caffiene via the MOUTH. It is't supposed to go in the other end.

Paulson - I've heard better. I read the BOFH stuff. Much better boss stories in there. I have a slightly better grasp of technology issues than your boss. Now excuse me while I pour your puke into your computers cup holder.

Lehk - Snicker. Well put.

==================================

ANYWAY, let me ask again: is it a toy, or does it provide alternate functionality (or both)? I don't use Active Desktop, so I never paid any attention to it and it's supposed benefits.

2006-07-03 01:12:57 AM
All that is needed is to convert mario.gif to mari.ani and use him as your cursor.

Its a toy.

Anyone remember Dremples? It was a cool active desktop that would distort .jpgs ala-mushroom trip style. It was constantly moving in the background, very cool

See Ultra-Hal, Paulson? It's just that easy!

Eh, I wouldn't trust active desktop anymore than IE. I would have to imagine it's just IE behind the scenes anyhow. Still fun though.

somemoron

Active Desktop basically lets you embed a browser window into your desktop, so you can have HTML/flash/etc. on your desktop. It's basically eyecandy; I haven't found a real productive use of it.

Desmo

Dremples was amazing. Only problem was that app leaked like crazy. I imagine it'd be possible to emulate the same kinda functionality using javascript or flash without the overhead of a seperate exe nowadays.
