My political heroes are Silvio Conte, George Aiken and Margaret Chase Smith.

I'm glad none of them are alive to see what has happened to the American body politic.

Swiftboating is a reference to the SwiftBoat Veterans. After they were generally accepted as telling the truth, and were cited continually throughout the the presidential campaign of 2004, it later became apparent that many of them, if not the group as a whole, had manufactured much of their "evidence" in an effort to discredit John Kerry about his character, especially as a former military man with actual combat experience.

Much of their stories and the corrections to them are well known, which is why when a group of people makes up lies or attempts to portray someone in an obviously false and misleading method, especially when it is regarding someone's expertise and opinions as they relate to their personal miltary history, that is called "swiftboating."

Basically, if someone doesn't like what a combat veteran says about the war, they call into question their history, and/or misrepresent their statements so that the person they might be disagreeing with has less of a disadvantage, as in most cases the person being swiftboated is criticizing someone who has no combat military experience.

And now you know.

Incorrect use. No one is "swift-boating" Murtha, his military record is not in question.

Be nice if someone had a recording of the speech, so it could be laid to rest, though. I doubt Murtha said it, but he has said some pretty stupid things in the last year.

2006-06-29 02:10:39 PM
This is nothing like the "Swift-boating" of Kerry. There, many other swift-boat veterans questioned Kerry's statements about his role in the war. Some of it was fabrications by Kerry, some of it was disingenuous by the swift-boat veterans. But it was a group of citizens who disagreed with a politician using their rights to voice their opinions. Since they presumably knew something about the subject, their opinion was weighted.

What happened here was an over-zealous political hack misquoting a senator that he disagrees with. Whether he heard what he wanted and simply didn't listen to the context in his zeal or deliberately took the quote out of context is unclear. Either way, it was very sloppy reporting.

The implications are that the Swift-Boat Veterans attacks had absolutely no truth to them (not true) and that Jack Murtha is a unimpeachable source. (not true)

I have a lot of problems with Murtha but this quote isn't one of them.

O RLY?

A Cybercast News Service investigation also reveals that one of Murtha's former Democratic congressional colleagues and a fellow decorated Vietnam veteran, Don Bailey of Pennsylvania, alleges that Murtha admitted during an emotional conversation on the floor of the U.S. House in the early 1980s that he did not deserve his Purple Hearts.

Colbert made fun of this kind of shiat last night. You guys really do just operate on rails. Or rather, 10 lines of code.

2006-06-29 02:16:38 PM
Wow, tommy, you have a very unhealthy obsession with the "naughty" physical parts and bodily functions of your political opponents. First it was your strange and disgusting fascination with Democrats' feces, and now an obsession with the size of Keith Olberman's penis. Add to this the long-held obsession with Bill Clinton's penis you share with many of your ilk, and a shrink would have a field day with this.

Isn't there something you need to admit to the group--and to yourself? Hmmmmmm?

2006-06-29 02:18:16 PM
Even if it's true that Murtha has said things you consider stupid in the past, it's still lying to fabricate quotes and attribute them to Murtha.

Boojum2k: No one is "swift-boating" Murtha, his military record is not in question

Military records don't have to be involved in "swiftboating", not according to wikipedia, anyway.

And, in this case, the term is remarkably apt, given the folks attacking Murtha...

Olbermann may be melodramatic, TGOT, but his antics simply can't compare to the good people at Fox News.

Ignoring the astroturfing, still. Its pretty damn interesting to watch the Fox News meltdown in lockstep with the drop in GOP approval. It likely won't matter one bit because they aren't losing jack or shiat as far as houses of Congress go, but it says a lot about FNC and perception of them as unabashed conservative propaganda.

As a longtime O'Rielly hater, I have to join many thousands in bowing in Olbermann's general direction - thank you.

Not to threadjack too overtly - but since TGOT brought it up, I'd like to float a little theory I've been working on:

I strongly suspect that if one were able to research the voting records of every convicted pedophile, rapist or other sexual deviant in the USA, they'd find a strong pro-republican trend. It seems that for those of us with a healthy regard for human sexuality, the perverse simply doesn't hold as strong an attraction. In order to really develop a love of the perverse, one must be raised in a strict repressive authoritarian environment.

I'm sure there must already be some fairly comprehensive studies done on this topic. If anyone has any links handy, I'd be interested in perusing them.

In any case, this theory seems borne out in my personel experience. I'm currently dating a woman who was raised in a strict, conservative religious home - and let me tell you, she is into some seriously KINK-AY shiat. Stuff that, while I've read about it in studies, would never occur to me to actually DO.

SO - If all you uptight right-wing fundy freakos want to turn your daughters into raving nympho BDSM slutpuppies, allow me to assure you that you're going about it in the right way! Well done, says I!

On another topic, anyone think Olbermann will be picked to take over the Daily Show on Comedy Central if and when Jon Stewart decides to leave?

No surprise that Fox's ratings are down and MSNBC's ratings are up, because America's finally waking up to Roger Ailes' hyjinx.

Not here perhaps, but they certainly are. and its every bit as sleazy as the Kerry attack. Just like Kerry they are focusing on his purple hearts ("he only got a little shrapnel, in HIS EYESOCKET, what a baby!") rather than his amply documented medal for actual heroism the BSV (just Like Kerry got) or the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

I always find it interesting that it is the same righties who have a near masturbatory obsession with all things military (except, you know, actually joining up and serving) and who insist that "supporting the Troops" is a nigh-sacred obligation, that are usually the first ones to question the credentials and experience of any Democrat who disagrees with them even if he is a combat veteran and they've never even been to a shooting range

June 2006
O'Reilly Factor: 2,141,000 viewers
Brit Hume: 1,178,000 viewers
Countdown: 286,000 viewers

Oh yeah, look at that freefall in ratings... and that rocket that's Olbermannn. Comedy Central should target him ASAP.

Olbermann is another O'Reilly. They are the same pathetic creatures. Only they are from opposite sides. 'Tis why they hate each other.

Ah. So TGOT thinks it's perfectly okay to troll everyone in a whole thread, but just not some individual personally. I guess that explains a bit.

2006-06-29 05:14:37 PM
Having bashed Rep. J. Murtha in previous thread subjects,
I must, all fairness, defend Murtha's townhall speech
for one reason. Murtha has, since his original crusade
for US forces in Iraq to pull out, been bombarded by
the GOP,DEM,political pundits,bloggers,Farkers and
others in addition to his announcing his desire to
be Nancy Pelosi's replacement as majority leader if
a Democratic victory in 08' occurs. For a military man
perhaps he knows the one you don't hear or pay attention
to is the one that will get you.

Did the Florida Sentinal err, or did J. Murtha?

He should have said in the Florida speech, that this
"poll" result was just that and, if his personal feelings
were the same, he should have added that fact clearly.

2006-06-29 05:16:00 PM
Ah. So TGOT thinks it's perfectly okay to "troll" everyone in a whole thread, Keith - the person who obsesses over Bill O'Reily for ratings - Olberman.

/fixed.

2006-06-29 05:18:20 PM
"...he should have added that fact clearly."

But he did not.

So everyone assumes that he disagrees with the poll, and anyone who thinks that Murtha agrees with the poll he cited, is a "troll."
