I've been on an old-school Zelda kick lately, but damned if I didn't want to left click and pull out my shield at the first look I got at that thing.

2006-06-26 12:49:42 AM
uh, why not throw a blanket under a real tree?

So that's where the Agrocrag went!

Confabulat: "I've been on an old-school Zelda kick lately, but damned if I didn't want to left click and pull out my shield at the first look I got at that thing."

Reminds me of the tree from Hyperion.

Bloody William: So that's where the Agrocrag went!

Well that brought a tear to my eye.

Just beautiful, man. Just beautiful.

2006-06-26 02:22:21 AM
Bloody William

You got me to laugh. Bonus points to you.

That thing looks pretty cool. My air conditioner is noisy, pulls from my electrical line, and never hugs me, nevermind plays soothing music.

Bravo, says me.

2006-06-26 02:25:35 AM
Ew. The only thing scary about this is how ugly it is.

2006-06-26 02:32:07 AM
Ahhh, there is nothing more soothing than giant, flailing spikes.

"To folly," he said. "To divine madness.
To insane quests and messiahs crying from the desert.
To the death of tyrants. To confusion to our enemies.
To heroes," he said. "To heroes who get their hair cut."

My thoughts exactly.

Actually, that's pretty sweet. Unfortunately, stress will probably build up in the line waiting to get in.

2006-06-26 02:40:00 AM
i would hotbox one of those pods.

2006-06-26 02:46:08 AM
I can see Edward Scissorhands taking a nap under that.

2006-06-26 02:48:49 AM
Im gonna guess that those pods and the rest of this tree use more energy than it can make.

2006-06-26 02:58:19 AM
Interesting. What do you want to bet it becomes a nap site for homeless people almost immediately?

2006-06-26 03:02:56 AM
I say people start shooting heroin in it right away.

What's wrong with real trees?

2006-06-26 04:00:27 AM
do do do do you have it... GUTS!

it looks like this piece of crap is totally awful, and a complete waste of taxpayer monies! hideousness is in first, followed closely by ridiculousness and coming up in third is counterintuitivity! but now to Mo for the official results, MO!

I used the pod on Saturday night. It was quite cool. You sit there, and pull the pod over you. It had little screens playing serene videos of the globe with some Dark Side of the Moon playing.

Plus it was convienently located outside of a pub.

Two things. One, if it's solar powered, doesn't it rain there 800 days a year? Second, how long before some drunken idiots play 'let's impale ourselves' on the spikes?

Real trees can cool you off, provide a peaceful break from the city, and sooth you with the sounds of real birds. And they dohn't cost anything besides a chunk of dirt.

2006-06-26 06:43:51 AM
Er, was the metal processed from ore using clean energy?

2006-06-26 06:58:00 AM
Oasis made a sculpture, huh? I'm surprised they didn't put it in Manchester.

How can it be relaxing to sit in a pod that is either going to have people queuing up outside for their turn or people peering in, looking at you?

And I wonder too about how much energy will be used up by this thing. It's not "saving" energy cos it's not a regular appliance that we need: it's a contraption that has used up energy for no good purpose. That square is probably more relaxing without this monster in it.

This post was brought to you with love from a cynical Londoner
In Tokyo. Where we have people-pods by the hundreds of thousands

Just to be clear; it's only there for 4 weeks.

I know this thread is dead but I think a real tree would've been smoother on the eye and more eco-friendly.

Common sense loses again!

2006-06-26 08:18:26 AM
Do these "pods" record your brain waves and send all your deepest darkest secrets to a secret government database for future use in covert blackmail....?

I bet they do.

How crowded, stressful, and miserable does your life have to be to walk up to something like this and say "I wish that thing had a pod I could pull down over myself so I could relax."

/Lives in US
//Lives 5 miles away from 13,000 acres of pristine wilderness in state and local parks
///That's not counting the wildlife management area, which is a little too pristine (rattlesnake nests, etc.)
////Suddenly appreciates said parks a whole lot more.

Can't get the video to play under FireFox (I'm an FF n00b) and I want to see those pods...any pix?

I'd have to agree with HotKarl, a personal pod would be an excellent smoking room. A 2-hitter or a bat would probably box it up!

2006-06-26 09:35:31 AM
Notice how in the article pic no one is sitting any damned where near that thing.

And that BS about how it's self powered is a joke, I don't think a thermal chimney that size would produce much power at all.

/putting your head in a pod and finding that the previous tenant puked in it

2006-06-26 09:57:18 AM
Eco-friendly? So how much energy was used to construct it, versus the infinitesimal amounts likely generated by its modest solar arrays?

/ likes renewable energy
// dislikes silly "green" stunts without an engineering foundation

2006-06-26 10:12:39 AM
Once enclosed, visitors can retreat from the busy streets to breathe clean, cooled air while relaxing to music and birdsongs.

So you can feel nice and relaxed while someone steals your wallet.

And now to Mo' for the results!
