Jeeze...people have no common sense.

1. Only go to an artist who uses sterile equipment and single-use needles (and legit inks, naturally).

2. Go ahead of time to observe their safety procedures--things like how clean they keep the place, how often they wash their hands, whether they wear gloves, that sorta thing.

3. It's probably best to go to an artist who's done work on someone you know. This way, if your friend has a good tattoo that didn't get infected, then that artist is a decent one. Conversely, if your friend's arm falls off, you know not to go to that artist.

And of course, 4. Use common sense.

/I got mine from the same artist who inked a friend of mine. I watched the sanitation procedures, knew that he used single-use needles, etc., and as a result, my tattoo never got infected.
//And I like it a lot.

Who the fark would go to a guy with a DIY tattoo kit? Really, what would make anyone think that was a good idea?

It's only going to be on you for the rest of your life, do your friggin research people.

(and now we'll prolly withstand a hundred-some comments about HURRRR TATTOOS = TEH SUCK...)

Don't forget that one should ask for the spore tests from the autoclave. Everything should be one-use and sterile, aside from the machine itself. A quality shop will be proud to show both its spore tests and their artists' portfolios. Also, if their tattooists can't draw or do custom work, it's time to leave and not look back.

One is reminded of the Fark thread where various Farkers showed off their tatoos (and nasty feet and backhair).

Wondering if 'dumbass' should be changed to 'PSA'???

Thank God I got my tat from an unlicensed artist in Indiana, in 1998.

2006-06-22 10:20:05 PM
Both the artist that did my tattoos were licensed, explained the safety procedures, wore gloves and follwed strict procedures mandated by the state. I was also given care instructions. No infection, scabbing or scarring. The back piece I had done is fairly large. It was fun using two mirrors and a gauze clamped in a set of tongs to keep it clean and moisturized. As noted above, choose the artist wisely, go to a reputable artist and above all, keep it clean and moisturized untill it heals.

I gave a guitar-string tattoo once when I was out in the fleet. Got caught, got my ass chewed.

I used to work with this Filipino guy who got some tattoos from some Mexican guy who learned to ink in jail. The biggest selling point, obviously, was that the work was dirt-cheap, both in quality and price. Never got infections so far as I know, but still a bad decision.

There is a high cost to being such a unique snowflake.

Tossing a ropy arc on a poorly inked tramp stamp doesn't even hold the ole hate-fark appeal anymore.

I have a DIY tattoo I got in the interest of punk rock years ago. It's a stupid, ugly little thing. The girl who did it used a tattoo gun made from a toothbrush, a guitar string, a pen, and the motor from a walkman.

Yeah, I was a damn fool.

2006-06-22 10:31:18 PM

Hmmm, three dots tatooed on the hand is a well knows gang symbol.

Just a little warning

My mother got a similar tatoo when she was diagnosed with cancer (something to do with removing the tumor). I always get people to say how much they hate tatoos in front of her, just so I can say she has one.

if a skin infection is all they get, they should consider themselves lucky. tattoos/body piercings have the potential to open yourself open to lots of horrible things. I would be willing to bet that 99% of the people who get them & claim "they're safe" have absolutely no clue on the sterilization procedures necessary to prevent the dreaded HCV nasty.

I gave a tattoo to a guy who let me use his homemade tat gun made from an electric toothbrush. It worked wonderfully, cept the fact that he used pen ink and not India ink. To this day, he still have a scar thats shaped like a circle on his ankle.

Oh, of course. Though that second one goes under 'common sense', I'd think....but hell, some people like getting cliche' pieces of trash permanently inked on 'em....

Admittedly my tattoo is of my fraternity's brother badge, so it was a fill-in. But it's not like it was picked off of a wall with a moment's thought, I waited five years to get it. I'm working up an idea now that I'll have an artist draw up properly for me.

Here's a better plan: Don't be a trendy fk, and resist getting a tattoo.

Currently, 1 in 4 people has a tattoo in this country. That sort of takes away all the uniqueness and personality to having a tattoo. Now it really is just doodling on your skin to get attention.

Pfeh. I'll pass, forever.
