I dont know a lot of Perl, but I would check the number of results returned by the query on the database, if there are no results, then output a warning, otherwise run the rest of the code.

No, are they hiring?

Laying off actually... I left there a few years ago for greener pastures anyway. Of course, my pasture has all turned brown by now. @#%@# tech downturn. I make 3/4 of what I did 1/2-2 years ago

I haven't spent much time contemplating why such idiots remain gainfully employed, but I figure a high percentage of them "program" in VB (please, an M$ language?), or are script kiddies.

Hogans -

What sort of programming do YOU do? Do you spend your time solving real problems or figuring out how to address memory?

I have known some brilliant VB developers who also know databases really well and make a huge difference for their companies and customers. I have also known some C++ guys that just can't seem to ever finish anything.

Don't go about whacking languages. It's about people and problems, not the languages they use.

Oh, and religion and programming are so apples and oranges I don't know where to start. What a farking joke.

TheMikey,

My background: I play in the realm of Borland's Delphi language (nifty OOP, and the editor GUI was so nice that not only other Borland languages use it, but M$ adopted it as well). I also work on SQL code using Oracle. "Real problems" tend to be most of my focus, if I understand your meaning correctly, but I periodically have to fiddle with API calls in order to do what I want.

As I said, like other lines of work, some people are brilliant, but others have no clue. I should have been more specific about VB use, though; don't forget that M$ has put a thinned-down version of it in their Office products for some time. There are plenty of people who write "10 PRINT "Hello World": 20 GOTO 10" and think they're programmers. I don't consider it programming until you have to spend some time and thought into putting together efficient algorithms.

It's nice to know that I can still irritate others, even without deliberately slinging mud. I hope this clears things up a bit.

When did I mention religion? Hmmm, non-sequitur...

Hogan -

The last line in my note was just a general commentary on this thread. You didn't mention religion except when you mentioned "these idiots" which I assumed referred to the religious comparison this thread started with.

So now I digress as to not confuse the reader. . .

Delphi is an awesome language, but so is VB, VC++, C#, Java, and a bunch of others. Don't go knocking languages just because you don't write in them.

In one respect, I guess religion is indeed a bit like programming - people like you bashing others who don't worship your language deity!

Oh yeah?

I haven't heard of a Unix guy suicide bombing any MS conferences.

"Planned Parenthood" has performed an illegal operation and must be shut down.

"...you will notice something else directly related to it: coherence and consistency. Exactly as it is in the Christian world view,..."

No.
