(Some Guy)   Why did it seem like Ann Coulter actually had fans on Leno? Because Freepers decided to create the illusion she has a massive fanbase   (freerepublic.com ) divider line

It's not just her, the Leno show routinely (and non-secretly) packs the audience with fans of one of the guests. Check out next time some up and coming musical group you've never heard of comes on, and there are wild screams at every mention of the name as though they were the Beatles.

Leno is the kind of interview show that wants to showcase a guest, let them say their thing and get their message across. It's purposely non-confrontational (another example of this approach is Larry King). Note all week they touted Carlin vs Coulter but there was no actual confrontation, Carlin stayed quiet during her segment.

CineKal, or I chose not to look into something that wasn't there. To me, she's simply trying to build off of Guthrie's success and portray herself as the same sort of widely accepted revolutionary. A bit pompous, but her music was good.

2006-06-17 10:55:42 AM
The musical guest was some chick from Scotland who stank, but had a mysterious message taped to her guitar which read: "THIS MACHINE KILLS FACISTS." Nobody seemed to know what this meant.

That speaks volumes.

Yeah, I agree with the Leno-bashers. If it were on Conan it probably would have been a war. That man knows good television.

i really am about as far from a hippy as it is possible to be, but i still love something about this kt tunstall quote

"[i'm] Meeting up with 'www.futureforests.com' to make my album carbon neutral - they plant trees in relation to your album sales to negate carbon emissions. And when they're big i shall hug them. Or it, depending on how well the album sells."

That's what I figured. Leno even said something about her having a fan club there earlier on in the show. They cheered in a really phoney, over-the-top way anytime Leno mentioned Coulter was going to be coming out or Coulter made some lame-ass point.

Dumbass freepers don't realize it but their support of Coulter makes themselves and right-wingers look bad. Every public appearance she makes points out to the mainstream just how batshiat insane the right is in this country and teaches them that the same shiat she pulls is the same crap O'Reilly and others pull, just they water it down slightly more. I'm all for Coulter appearing on TV because each time she does just exposes the right-wing for what it is a little bit more.

How come these people aren't equally outraged when George Carlin says the human race needs to die off, for the good of the planet?

Please tell me you aren't this stupid.

When Carlin does his schtick, at least it's openly part of an act. There are idiots in this country who genuinely believe Coulter.

Going back and reading the Freeper comments in the link made me smile. Coulter is using these tools for their cash and they're just so oblivious, they suck up to her like she's a god. I guess there's some irony there, what with the Godless title of her book.

Yep. If I thought she was being a comedian, my feelings about her act would be different. I did like her for a moment during this online interview:
Borders: Why do you think people like to see you two duke it out?

AC: CONSERVATIVES LIKE TO HEAR MY ARGUMENTS ON THE WAR ON TERRORISM AND DOMESTIC POLITICS, AND LIBERALS LIKE TO HEAR AL CALL ME A LYING WHORE.

Urm - if your books always zoom up the BYT bestsellers lists, you have the ability to pack venues you appear in, and TV shows book you because you up THEIR ratings......

I think it MIGHT be because you actually DO "have a massive fanbase"?
Just sayin'.

Michael Moore has his fanbase, why does it surprise members of the MM cult that Ann might have her own following?

It's not surprising that the Freepers would not recognize a Woody Guthrie allusion.

Not learning from history is their stock in trade.

TFA: The musical guest was some chick from Scotland who stank, but had a mysterious message taped to her guitar which read: "THIS MACHINE KILLS FACISTS." Nobody seemed to know what this meant, but I did notice that at the end of the show she shook Carlin's hand, then Ann's, but then immediately focused a conversation on Carlin and didn't even glance at Ann again, as if she wasn't there.

Wow.. A simple google search would have let her know about the existence of folk legend Woody Guthrie's message..

I love the second part more, though. The horror! She wouldn't acknowledge Coulter! She politely shook hands, but then didn't attack or praise! Shocking!

Let that be a message to the left. Freepers and extreme righties's goal is to piss off "liberals" (i.e. anyone who disagrees). They scapegoat liberals the way they think that liberals scapegoat Bush. The more that liberals get annoyed by their presence, the more they feel vindicated and will continue on.

If she has a massive fanbase, why did the Freepers have to show up?

I think some people aren't fans and just buy her book to be pissed off, basically. Plus the numbers are likely inflated by groups that buy the book in bulk and sell them for 80-90% off.

If you can't tell the difference between the level of insanity Ann

you are doing her an injustice. I'd have to say, with the possible
exception of Fred Phelps, Ann Coulter is in a class all by herself.

Superjoe, there are a lot of Freepers. They are fans of Coulter. It's not that hard to put the two together and say she has a massive fanbase. They may all have the same ideology, but there are still a lot of them.

Why The Billdozer, you shouldn't swear, the FCC will have to rip you a new one.

Thankfully, your log in name isn't Drew and if it were this site would probably look a lot like Free Republic - then you could ban me at your leisure.

What's the matter? The idea of someone suggesting that Ann and Fred belong together bothering you or is it the picture of Ann in a straitjacket that is making you crazy? Face it, they are two peas in a pod, one trying to outdo the other in the attention whoring department while neither of them add anything useful to the political discourse.

You're likely right if you take "Freepers" to mean Fox News watchers, Limbaugh listeners, etc. I think the literal Freepers (people at the website) are small in number as a percentage of the overall population.

Mostly I take issue with the idea that, if you saw that episode (I dunno if you did), the cheering from the audience was representative of the typical audience. Like I said, it was pretty over-the-top and was clearly a handful of noisy individuals. It didn't even seem like they enjoyed what they were cheering for, they just sounded like they had an agenda.

Superjoe : If she has a massive fanbase, why did the Freepers have to show up?

I think you're confusing cause & effect here. If someone's popular, their fans show. Period. It's not a case of their fans "having" to show up, it's a case of their WANTING to show up.

I think some people aren't fans and just buy her book to be pissed off, basically. Plus the numbers are likely inflated by groups that buy the book in bulk and sell them for 80-90% off.

Heh. I don't plan on buying any Mike Moore or Al Frankin books myself as a result of not liking them.

As for the "$4.99" ads, I think that's known as capitalism. Actual hardcover books cost around a $1-$2 to print - but where they REALLY make their money on that offer is by adding your name to a "friendly-to-Conservatives" mailing list - which they can then rent out for decades of income.

Besides, if the "SciFi Book Club" and "Mystery Book Club" and "Computer Book Club" amd so on who keep sending me mailings are able to turn a profit selling $20-30 books for $4.99 I bet these folks are too.

BTW - what's with all the "tran-sexual" postings everytime Fark has an Ann Coulter item? Not only is it a bit weird and hypocritical that so many (supposedly tolerant) Libs regard that as an insult, but it's a bit creepy (IMHO) that so many lefties here seem to have such a fascination with the subject........

Q : "Ann, why is the pairing of you & Al Frankin so popular?"

AC : "Well, conservatives like to hear me give concise, pithy, humorous arguements in favor of conservative viewpoints.
And liberals like to hear Al call me a lying whore."

I think she serves a very valuable purpose. She brings forth the proof that the left has people every bit as idiotic, irrational, and hateful as some of those on the right.

You want proof that the left is just as bad, just mention her name and stand back.

It's worth noting that I have never participated in an electronic discussion environment hosted by hard-line conservatives like freepers/redstaters that *didn't* eventually turn into a banfest. That's one reason I enjoy Fark so much, the moderation is done pretty independently and fairly.

You get a lot more done when you force people to defend their ideas with logic and reason instead of ad hominem and bans.

More how? As a total? As a percentage of the points they've made?

Sure, she gets more response than Moore, but then, she has much broader exposure as well. As well as making many more claims, at much greater frequency. Are they both off base? Yup. Do you see the same sort of idiotic responses to both of them? Yup.

Review this thread, how would you rate the ratio of attack to legitimate arguments? 1-1? 10-1? 100-1? I think it's closer to the last than the first two.

Like I said, just as idiotic, irrational, and hateful.

That's a great qoute.

Those are the words of someone who (a) wants to do the right thing, and (b) is quite humble and capable of poking fun at herself.

Sort of like the exact polar opposite of Ann Coulter. It's no wonder that she politely shook Coulter's hand, and then proceeded to ignore her completely.

Oh no... (wink wink, nudge nudge)...

You see, when Michael Moore says something like "Dick Cheney still holds stock in Halliburton, and is getting rich off this war he supports"...

... why, it's the exact same level of extremism as when Ann Coulter says that "We should murder their leaders and forcibly convert all Muslims to Christianity."

How could anyone POSSIBLY label one of those statements as being more extreme than the other?
